I am so pleased that he can retire knowing that he is an actual top drawer premier league midfielder. 

Most of us knew it but for whatever reason he never really seemed to make that category in years gone by, but in the twilight of his career he is absolutely that. 

We have been lucky to have such a player to play for us for such a long time.  Absolute legend.

Certainly think that Cairney dropping deep to collect the ball nullifies any perceived weakness in Issa Diop's ability to play out of defence.

What are you talking about? This was clear today. He has had great moments this season. He's not a starter but his quality still applies.

Will dearly miss him when he leaves. Can rely on him year in year out to score some absolute beauties.

What are you talking about? This was clear today. He has had great moments this season. He's not a starter but his quality still applies.

Coaching role maybe, but playing? He is past it for a team that just missed out of Europe

Some on this thread imply that using Cairney in games and agreeing a contract extension is somehow a sign of lack of ambition and that he's past it etc etc.

I see it differently. He can come on in games and influence a game from the start, as he did today. He has exceptional awareness of what is going on around him. He makes the team tick. He rarely loses the ball. And of course he can score goals. Yes he is not a box to box midfielder or a ferocious tackler but those were never his strengths.

What we don't know is how much influence he has on younger players behind the scenes. But I would think it extremely likely that his positive influence is pervasive throughout the club.

So in 2026/27 he may not get many minutes. But you can be sure that he will have an influence on games in those minutes.

Newcastle were all over us in the 2nd half until TC came on and steadied the ship. And I just loved the way we all shouted SHOOT when he found himself in that magic spot with no-one around him.

I'm not too sure Newcastle were ever all over us, but I agree that - as he so often does - he took control of the game. His goal was the third of three excellent shots from distance. I wish he'd do more of that, including taking free kicks on the edge of just outside the opposition penalty box.

As has been commented elsewhere, it's completely baffling that he has so few Scottish caps. Their manager obviously doesn't rate him...but i think his 30 minute cameos in the heat of Mexico and the US would be very effective.
