Early days still.

Disappointing overall but there's been a huge amount of change since last year. There was always going to be a transition period.

The defence needs sorting, that much is clear.

It'll be interesting to see how things look once the new recruits are up and running.

The most concerning thing for me is Arbeloa's comments about how we played with spirit and character etc.  And if we play like this every week we will start winning.  Not one reference to our shambolic defending.  Well we can't win 4-3 every week.  And if he doesnt address the back four and keeper issues soon then he should be shown the door.  The last thing this club needs at the moment is a naivety.

I do think he's right though, we played well going forward and could have scored a hat full. The players will probably wonder how we managed to lose that.

I think the problem is this hasn't been a transition it's been a complete tear up and start again . We had an established system and senior players it should have been adapted to his style . I don't think Muniz, ESR , Kevin ( understood he hasn't pulled up trees but before the injury he was becoming an important player) and now Berge should have been discarded for young untried players . Start with what you know and slowly bring in your players . For me , what he has done is a sure fire way of creating a rift in the camp , especially when your new way is having so many teething problems

We aren't Real Madrid though, we can't play games just 'scoring more goals than them' and neglecting our defence. We don't have 'Galacticos'.

We played Sunderland and Palace, I watched both games and both of those teams were pretty poor.
The concern is once we start playing half decent teams (let alone the big 6) aka, Bournemouth, Brentford, we will get spanked.

When you defend that badly you deserve to lose.  I dont kno whow AA can say we deserved to win.  Yeah we looked threatening going forward but football is a two way game.  We cant all just bomb forward like that and expect to pick up points every week.

Everytime a side attack us, We look like we are going to conceed...
Failure to address this and we are basically sleepwalking into the Championship....
We cannot need to score 4 goals every match to get something out of it....

Agree we always looked like we'd conceed last year too, just looked it up and we had 9 clean sheets which was joint 10-14th in the league, gives a great indicator of where in the league you'll finish.

So if we looked dodgy defensively last season and even more this season it aint looking promising.

All for being aggressive and front foot defending but has to come from a position of strength with everyone being in the right positions in the first place

He's one of many problems.  Andersen is a problem.  Robinson's form is a massive problem.  Just re-watched the highlights of their goals and the gap between Andersen and Robinson when Chilwell was played in was horrific.

Leno is being completely exposed by our lack of defense, whilst I think his problems are secondary to tightening up a bit our lack of succession planning is really poor.

I agree Leno is a bit of a problem, but he wasn't that bad yesterday, he wasn't great don't get me wrong, I've seen far worse, I'd even say he slightly improved on previous performances.

The real problem for me is the defence. It's not the players, it's the tactics.
If any of you saw MOTD yesterday, Danny Murphy freeze frames points in which we've lost the ball, and our defenders are massively out of position.

I think it is more to do with the team defending (or rather not defending) as a whole than who is selected in the back four and as the keeper.  Individually, our defenders are as good as most in this league.  Our defence is left horribly exposed by the current style of playing.

Yeah it's pretty systematic. This style needs 4 rapid defenders. We have two in Bassey and Robinson. On the right, we don't.

It seems pretty suicidal, and we will have to sacrifice some of the attacking risk in order to tighten up.

Russel Martin trying to get a group of kids to play keep ball in league 1 with Leicester after failing to do so with better players at Southampton and rangers . Amorim at United . Big Ange at spurs ( down to 10 and still playing a high line " it's the way we play mate ") . This rarely ends well and the warning lights are flashing . If he does this next week , it could get ugly .

The BBC player ratings gave every Palace player a higher rating than any of our players - even King.

I can't invest much belief in their value when I see that.

No idea how they work but they never correlate with the game in any way, they're useless as a reference in any context.
