Quote from: demeant0r on May 28, 2026, 11:56:10 AMSo now it's midday Thursday. Technically over half the week has elapsed now if he was counting the weekend when saying he'll make this mind up this week. Or just 1.5 more days if only weekdays.

MAKE UP YOUR DAMN MIND MARCO.
You clearly are not an underemployed sports rumour journalist to be taking that kind of hard line position! :slap:

Which is a big part of the problem.

I'm not that fussed about Silva the coach staying really - I'd like him to stay, but I also don't think he's irreplecable (though I don't have huge trust that we'll get the appontment right).

The bigger reason I want Silva to stay is that if he does, it means he has one the idealogical battle with Mackintosh over the clubs' strategy - prioritising football outcomes over financial ones. We're never going to progress* if we don't get better at proactively turning over/refreshing the squad and taking a few more measured risks in recruitment.

*and thats assuming we don't start to fall backwards against other teams currently below us who are doing things more intelligently.

The thing is, do you know Silva has been asking for more risks in recruitment? As a manager, he doesnt need the club to sign young or exotic players who might come good over the next few years. He could be gone by then. His inclination is mode likely to sign players like Andersen and Iwobi - established PL players already at their peak.

Seems that poch is talking to AC Milan, I'm quite happy about that as not my first or second choice

Was he your third choice?

Poch would be incredible acquisition but realistically teams further up the pecking order with tons of tradition and clout make us very unlikely if teams like Milan are sniffing. We shall see?

The one thing that may help? Is that the PL is stronger.. Villa, Palace won both European competitions, and Arsenal are in the CL final.

Losing Klopp and Guardiola takes the shine off a but on a manager level, but perhaps makes it more competitive to potentially win in the league..?

well the Khans got the last appointment (Silva) right. Appointment came out of left field, he oversaw one of our best ever seasons winning the Championship and then consolidated our position in the PL with four solid mid-table seasons, with a fifth to follow. So why assume the next appointment will be wrong?

They've on the whole made more bad calls than good with managers. But the main reason I am anxious is the desperation to keep him infers a lack of confidence in plan B.

We're deluded if we think Poch would come to us. He was interviewed in 442 magazine this month and said that his ambition is to win the Premier League after having come so close with Spurs previously.

We're not even at the races.

Bye.

Thanks for the memories. ::wine::  ::thumb::

Now maybe we can move on.

This is disgraceful if true all his focus should be on getting USA out of the group and into the knockouts

Can't win can they? if they don't try hard enough to sign Silva again they get castigated.  If they try hard they get condemned as desperate.

The lack of information is slightly disturbing. Either the club knows Marco is going or he is actually stalling and the club is holding its breath basically.

Even if the clubs first choice is Marco, I expect them to have already drawn up a short list and that they are actively sounding out suitable candidates.

I mean, Iraola feels like a non starter for us but Crystal Palace is heavily linked with him, he has turned down AC Milan apparently and he is already settled in England. So if there is a 1% chance that he could even consider us- then we should be all over Iraola. Same with Glasner, even if the chances are next to nothing. But that means us being proactive and not reactive.

Moving fast and decisive is key so that we have a new manager in place early to be able to have a say in shaping the squad, because there is a lot of work to be done

Don't think it's a case of "can't win". Every contract renewal or transfer turns into a bit of a shambles with us in a way that is beyond normal.

The club should have had an offer and set a deadline. We're now in a situation where we have a manager who has been looking around at other clubs has been keeping us hanging around as a backup option.

I do think it comes across as a bit desperate and not the behaviour of a well run club.

On Wednesday, I asked a friend who has links with someone at Benfica and the response came back:

'Benfica is currently completely unaware of the situation. The board doesn't know what to do. Mourinho remains the coach. Marco Silva is a difficult option, especially since many people don't want him. We'll have to wait.'

There is a good case for every manager SK has appointed which could easily have worked out. Symons, wasn't Danny Murphy one of the advisors, fan favourite. Magath, track record of keeping teams up etc. There was no guarantee that Silva would have been successful when he was appointed and I doubt anyone on here was over the moon when he was given the job.

blingo

Florentino Perez has just said on Spanish tv that he hasnt spoken to jose mourinho to date and that there will be more than one managerial candidate for the post at R Madrid. So everything thats been reported and said so far is bs

Deeping_white

Mourinho is confirmed to be going back to Madrid, Ornstein has just tweeted about it. So Benfica deffo need a new manager now and that probably increases the chances of Marco taking it. Seems an odd sideways step in all honesty because Porto are likely to be favourites for the title again and Benfica are in the qualifiers for the Europa League so yes he'll have European football, but I don't even think they'd be favourites to win it plus its a weaker league?

I'm not so keen on Glasner, he's a premium version of Frank.

For the record I WAS over the moon when we signed Silva. Or at least pretty excited about the prospect.
