If Brede doesn't sign, we should let him run his contract down and keep him until the summer. He is the rock of our defence and we can't afford for him to go and not be replaced.

We certainly should not be selling him or anyone else to a relegation rival

Rock ?
Please define Rock for me ?

Riverside

Don't get me wrong I am not saying that Hughes , Senderos and Baird are any better . They are not .
But Hangeland a Rock this season ?

we certainly cant afford for our best defender to go for free? That makes no sense seeing that money is tight with us

If he goes and the club get relegated surely that's worse than keeping him and letting him go for free at the end of the season? He won't command a huge fee now, so it's not like the club are gonna lose out on £10 mil or anything.

we are on course to getting relegated with him so what difference does it make? lol. Seriously tho we cant defend anymore and the teams around us bar villa are getting stronger

God The Mechanic

But the team are (arguably) even weaker without him. Unless he's gonna get replaced its WAY more prudent to keep him than get rid to a rival.

Exactly - one thing cashing in and flogging him, but to another relegation-threatened team is beyond stupidity. If this one goes through late Thursday, I will be effin furious. And Jol/the club will have completely lost any remaining confidence I may have in them.

oh im not saying flog him to qpr. Im just saying Im sure there will be a host of clubs after him no doubt. I say we do get rid, give the captaincy to someone 100% focused and actually vocal on the pitch and go from there.

Karagounis should be captain!

Or El Sid, albeit he had an absolute mare at OT. But yeah, Hangeland's no captain.

Based on this season I'd be shocked if any half decent club would be after him. He's been very shaky and occasionally very poor.

JustOverTheRiver

So if we come out of this transfer window keeping all our current players and having brought in Frimpong and De Carmargo, will that be enough?

I can see your point and I guess we just differ on what we want in the team.
We are in a relegation dogfight and I cant see anything changing in the short term. Me personally, I only want players on the pitch who are 100% committed and ready to actually grind out results..Brede obviously is shopping around and you have to ask, does he really honestly care or feel bothered if we got relgated anymore? He is not signing for a reason and he should be stripped of the armband and sold. Its nothing personal but we need people to stand up and be counted and at the moment he is failing to deliver as captain and as a reliable player.
Come towards the end of the season if he has signed for a new club to join in the summer then he will not be 100% focused and I worry about that if we are needing points.

Agreed. 2 and a half days to go, we are obviously trying to do some deals (on the cheap, as per)

Several people have said that, if he won't sign a new contract, why is he still here? The answer is that he has an existing contract that he is quite entitled to run down. We can, and possibly have, tried to offload him, but if the player doesn't fancy the move (to QPR for example) the most we could do is give him the Dempsey treatment.

I'm quite sure Brede's agent is reminding him that, if he is patient for a few months, he will be in a much stronger bargaining position as a free agent.

BalDrick

'he will be in a much stronger bargaining position as a free agent'

A far stronger position than at a relegated side.

I've felt for a long time, and thought I read somewhere too, that he's got his sights set on going home. He's a year late for going out at the top IMO, which may or may not be why we appear to have made rather derisory efforts at getting him to extend. Needs to relinquish the armband though

To be fair we don't know how derisory, or indeed generous, our contract offer has been.

westcliff white

in relation to de camargo...only a rumour but according to a dutch site elfvoetbal Everton have beaten us to his signing. Not seen anything here in Brussels, there was a link to HIN . be however nothing appeared on the site.

Either way, he should not be captain if either he thinks the offer is derisory (I doubt that it is, but it may not be as long as he might like) or he wants to be off (and I also think he wants to head home).
