Liverpool could make millions on deadline day as Fabio Carvalho talks continue

The ECHO's Paul Gorst breaks down the options for Liverpool on transfer deadline day

Liverpool are getting used to busy ends to the month of January.

On this day 12 months ago, the Reds moved to bring in Ben Davies from Preston North End to help ease a defensive department that was on its knees with a grand total of zero fit senior centre-backs at the club.

Following on from his arrival, armed with the knowledge that Joel Matip would be joining Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk on the shelf for the remainder of the campaign, the Reds embarked on an out-of-character dash across Europe to find another centre-half to supplement the arrival of Phillips.

After a move for Marseille's Duje Caleta-Car fell apart, it was a loan deal for Schalke's Ozan Kabak that was sanctioned after Jurgen Klopp had received a glowing recommendation from David Wagner, who was the Turkey's international's manager for a short time.

That Davies is currently on loan at Sheffield United having failed to play a single minute under Klopp after Liverpool declined the chance to sign Kabak permanently at half of his original fee tells you all about how desperate the Reds were one year ago.

In 2022, however, the state of play is much healthier and a buoyant Liverpool head into transfer deadline day with £50m Luis Diaz already stowed away for safe keeping later this month.

After securing a big-money move for the Colombian international from Porto during a manic few days last week, the Reds' recruitment team swiftly turned their attention to Fulham's Fabio Carvalho.

For a club that is often accused of inertia by those who clamour for new signings, the Reds have been hard at work behind the scenes.

They have tracked Carvalho for some time and have watched him develop into one of the most exciting talents in the Championship under Marco Silva this season.

With four Premier League appearances to his name for the Cottagers, the England youth international has emerged as an important member of a free-scoring side that sit top of the Championship at present.

Liverpool are one of several clubs who are looking to take Carvalho away from Fulham as he enters the final few months of his contract with the west London club.

It is understood a £5m offer has been tabled for the Lisbon-born attacker, a fee the Reds believe to be an entirely fair one given he can walk away in the summer on a free transfer.

One issue Anfield officials have is the idea that Carvalho may be viewed as more important to Fulham in the long term if he stays put to help with their push for a Premier League return between now and the end of the campaign.

That is why Liverpool have told Fulham that any potential move would see Carvalho loaned back to Fulham until the end of May.

It is understood that Liverpool are keen to avoid a tribunal hearing around any potential deal in the same way that saw the two clubs go up before the authorities to hear about the terms that brought Harvey Elliott from London to Merseyside in 2019.

Fulham are reluctant to lose the 19-year-old and while Carvalho is currently using his parents as his representatives, having dispensed with the agents' services last year, he rejected a new deal in November and is carefully weighing up his next move.

Liverpool have not spoken to Carvalho's representation at this stage, with Anfield sources stressing that they have opened dialogue only with Fulham.

At the age of 19, senior figures at Anfield see Carvalho as a potential star-of-the-future and his ability to play in a number of positions makes him an exciting prospect for Klopp.

The Reds boss has never shied away from blooding young players into his squad with Kaide Gordon currently taking tentative steps towards that goal himself.

In recent years Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones and Elliott have become important first-team members as teenagers.

Elsewhere, the futures of Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi remain the subject of speculation.

The Reds are planning for the rest of the campaign with both in their ranks, but sizable offers before 11pm will bring them to the table.

Minamino is valued at around £20m and is attracting interest from both Leeds and Monaco.

It's over two years since the club struck a £7.25m deal with Red Bull Salzburg and it's fair to say the Japan international has struggled to convince those on the outside of his ability to be a long-term, quality alternative.

A loan move to Southampton 12 months ago failed to lead to anything and while Klopp is happy to keep him as an attacking option as the club fight on all fronts, a tempting offer will be listened to.

The same applies to Origi who is into the final six months of his Liverpool deal.

The Belgium striker has not started a game in the Premier League this season and has been unable to make the most of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane's AFCON-exile thanks to a knee injury.

Origi has made no noises about wanting to leave Liverpool and those at the club believe his history of big goals at key moments make him a valuable tool to have for the remainder of the campaign.

Diaz's arrival, however, pushes Origi further down the pecking order and a parting of the ways feels like it is only a matter of time, even if he does not move on today.

Atalanta are reportedly keen on the striker and he can speak to clubs outside of England about a pre-contract agreement today.

There has been no mention of what might be considered a fair valuation for Origi on deadline day.

Nat Phillips is likely to be the subject of late interest as clubs continue to circle around the centre-back.

Newcastle's interest has subsided following their move for Brighton's Dan Burn but Liverpool are likely to still be fielding calls about the 24-year-old.

A contract that was signed on deadline day back in August has preserved his value for the long term, but with Phillips desperate to kick-start his career, Liverpool may look at his sterling service in helping the club to the Champions League last season as a debt of gratitude.

The Reds were looking between £12-£15m for Phillips last month but with the window entering its final 12 hours, that fee may have to be reduced if they are to get a cash sum for the defender today.

There is an alternative option that sees him go out on loan but it is believed Phillips would prefer a long-term move that provides him with a fresh start after barely playing this year at Anfield.

Neco Williams is wanted by Bournemouth and has cut short a holiday in Dubai to talk through his next move with his representatives.

Liverpool are happy to loan him out to a Championship side who are chasing promotion.

Loris Karius' search for a new club goes on, with Klopp more than happy to allow the goalkeeper to move on.

The German hasn't played for the Reds since the 2018 Champions League final and has been allowed to look for a new club for some time after loan spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin failed to lead to anything more permanent.

Liverpool looking to complete deal to sign Carvalho

Liverpool are looking to complete a deal to sign Fulham youngster Fabio Carvalho in a move that would see the 19-year-old loaned back to the Whites until the end of the season.

The Reds want to snap up Carvalho, who is out of contract at the end of the season, despite Fulham being reluctant to let him leave as they look to wrap up promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Marco Silva said on Friday that Carvalho, who has enjoyed a superb season under his guidance with seven goals in 18 appearances after being overlooked by former Fulham boss Scott Parker, will remain at the club until the end of the season.

However, the club risk losing the talented teenager to a fee decided by a tribunal if they do not agree a deal for him to go.

That is something the club's board are keen to avoid after the Professional Football Compensation Committee ruled that Liverpool must pay just £1.2m for Harvey Elliott – potentially rising to £4.3m last year – after he left Craven Cottage for Anfield in July 2019.

Liverpool's deadline day deal for 'fantastic' talent could now collapse

Premier League giants Liverpool could now miss out on Fabio Carvalho with Fulham determined to keep the wonderkid for their ongoing Championship promotion push, according to The Mail (live blog, 10.55am).

During Saturday's 1-1 draw with Blackpool at Craven Cottage, Carvalho turned on the style and showed everyone just what all the fuss is about.

Spinning away from his marker on the halfway line, the Portuguese-born playmaker combined beautifully with Neeskens Kabano before haring down on goal.

He squared up to a backpeddling defender, shifted the ball onto his left foot and, in the blink of an eye, hammered a shot towards the Blackpool net.

Imagine Carvalho's frustration, then, when the ball rebounded back off the post. After all that good work, no reward. But while Carvalho would miss out on his eighth goal of an exceptional breakthrough season, the rest of a typical, flowing Fulham move highlighted why the 19-year-old whizzkid is a player in such high demand.

Supremely self-confident, boasting guile and grit in equal measure, Carvalho possesses the kind of ruthless end product not often associated with someone so young. Even if his radar was a little off on Saturday.

He's scored seven goals and set up four more for a Fulham side five points clear at the top under Marco Silva. Unsurprisingly, the Cottagers want to keep such a 'fantastic' talent – to quote Silva – around for as long as possible.

Will Liverpool now miss out on Fabio Carvalho?

Liverpool were expecting to seal a £5 million deal for Carvalho on deadline day. One that would see the former England U18 international return to West London on loan until the summer.

Fulham, however, have come to the conclusion that they would rather not sell Carvalho now. Perhaps fearing that a move to one of the biggest clubs on the continent may distract their fresh-faced talisman from the task at hand.

The Mail adds that Liverpool may be 'reluctant' to sign Carvalho in the summer too.

He will be a free-agent in July. But, as he is under the age of 24, Fulham may be due a sizeable fee following a tribunal.

That may be in excess of the £5 million Liverpool are prepared to pay.

Liverpool falling short in bid to sign attacking talent on deadline day

Liverpool are said to be currently falling short with their bid to sign Fabio Carvalho before the end of the transfer window later on today.

The Reds signed Luis Diaz over the weekend and are now making a late play to bring in Carvalho from Fulham.

As yet, though, the Cottagers are apparently not happy with the offer on the table:

Anfield Watch Verdict

There's still time for this deal to be done but it remains to be seen what happens next.

He is a talented player and lots of clubs will be interested in him right now.

His contract is up in the summer, and Liverpool are trying to avoid a tribunal in making it happen this month.

Barnsley eye Quina deal

Barnsley are interested in taking over Fulham's loan of Domingos Quina from Watford, according to the BBC Radio 5 Live football correspondent Ian Dennis.

There is a shared acknowledgement between Watford and Fulham that the Portuguese attacking midfielder's loan at Craven Cottage has not worked out. The Hornets are keen to get Quina some more regular first-team football for the remainder of the season after he has featured just four times under Marco Silva since September.

A switch to Swansea City was rumoured last week, but the chances of that deal coming to fruition now appear remote. Instead, it looks like the Championship's bottom side could be Quina's next destination – possibly as soon as this afternoon.

BBC journalist shares details of Fulham's latest Carvalho demands as Liverpool look to strike deadline day move

Liverpool have reportedly yet to meet Fulham's demands for the signing of Fabio Carvalho.

The Reds had submitted a £5m bid, though it would appear that this has fallen short of the Cottagers' expectations following BBC sport journalist, Ian Dennis', latest update on the matter.

The Merseysiders have already secured Luis Diaz on a £37.5m deal from FC Porto and appear to be battling to secure the signature of the 19-year-old before the deadline is up.

This is a deal not designed to sabotage the London outfit's season, with us reportedly prepared to see the midfielder remain with Marco Silva's men for the remainder of their promotion push.

Though it's possible the side could earn a higher fee for the player from a tribunal at the end of the season, history is hardly on the club's side.

The £4.3m awarded to Fulham for Harvey Elliott (dependent on the player featuring in more than 100 games for us and receiving a national call-up) fell far short of the £10m they'd hoped to acquire.

Even if hoping to reach the £8m (£6.5m with £1.5m in add-ons) awarded in a record tribunal fee to Burnley for Danny Ings, it's hardly a major increase worth the risk of blowing away a guaranteed £5m for.

Why Liverpool face race against time to sign Fabio Carvalho

Liverpool are still interested in Fabio Carvalho but Fulham are digging their heels in

Previous experience could determine just whether Fabio Carvalho becomes a Liverpool player by the end of today.

The 19-year-old winger has been a standout performer in the Championship for Fulham this season and Liverpool have been sufficiently impressed to try and engineer a £5m swoop for the Portuguese before the closing of the January transfer window this evening, adding to the £37.5m business already concluded for Porto forward Luis Diaz.

But Fulham, keen to keep hold of their exciting prospect, aren't keen on selling, especially if it means they lose him for the remainder of their season and their tilt at a return to the Premier League, with the club currently sitting five points clear at the summit of the Championship.

And with Liverpool pretty much at the limit of what they are willing to pay for Carvalho at present, with the teenager out of contract in the summer.

Liverpool want it done now in order to avoid the potentially messy situation of a tribunal at the end of the season, with the Cottagers being entitled to compensation for Carvalho if he does move on due to their role in his development, having nurtured him in the academy from 2014 following his family moving to England from Portugal in 2013.

Fulham don't feel particularly pressured to sell him now, especially if he won't be loaned back to them, and they would be confident of receiving at least what Liverpool are offering at present.

And if it went to tribunal it would offer the chance for other clubs to show their hand, with European clubs able to pick up the fraction of what it would cost English clubs, with clubs from other European only required to pay a nominal fee in line with FIFA regulations.

Liverpool and Fulham have been down this route before, with neither particularly pleased.

When Liverpool moved for a then 16-year-old Harvey Elliott in 2019 they had offered some £750,000, a figure well below the £8m that the Cottagers had wanted to receive.

The Professional Football Compensation Committee (PFCC) is designed to protect the interests of English football clubs who produce talent through their own systems, and when a panel met last year to decide on Elliott's fee it was ruled that a fee worth potentially as much as £4.3m would be paid to Fulham. It was a record compensation fee for a 16 year old.

A Liverpool statement released in the wake of the tribunal read: "Liverpool Football Club respects the outcome of the PFCC's fair and thorough process in this matter."

Fulham declared themselves pleased with the outcome, although the manager at the time, Scott Parker, had lamented the decision.

Parker said: "It's madness really. This is a player who had been developed at this football club for a long, long time.

"I think he was our youngest-ever player. We gave him his debut. You don't want to go and spend £20-30m on players.

"That's why the academy for us is so important – because you want to develop these players. We had developed that player for a big club to take him.

"Harvey Elliott has the potential of being a top-class football player. Liverpool have taken him off us for minimal numbers for the potential of what Harvey is capable of."

Liverpool, who were also stung by tribunal over Danny Ings' 'free transfer' from Burnley in 2015 when they paid a record compensation figure of £8m, are wary of having to pay above and beyond should it go to tribunal.

And with teams from abroad able to show their hand for far less financial risk it represents the possibility of the price being driven high due to the sheer interest in acquiring Carvalho's services.

Liverpool's desire to expedite the process means that the window of opportunity is a small one to get the deal done for Carvalho.

To go into the uncertainty of a tribunal, something that is a messy affair that takes time, money and the allocation of club resource, and which could cost them far more than they were willing to pay now, would likely not chime with the kind of financial prudence that has become Liverpool's hallmark in recent years.

For Fulham, keeping Carvalho, either on loan or risking losing him to a European club for a small nominal fee in the summer, is worth the risk due to the financial impact that returning to the Premier League would have for the Cottagers come the end of the season.

Should that be derailed by losing someone like Carvalho, late in the window with no real chance to get in an acceptable replacement, then it would not be deemed worth the risk.

Strained relations could cost Liverpool in transfer pursuit

Liverpool's fractious relationship with Fulham could cost them in their bid to sign Fabio Carvalho, it is being reported.

The Reds have been busy at the end of this window with them signing Luis Diaz over the weekend and with them now looking into a late move for Carvalho.

Indeed, he is a talented player and this transfer has similarities to the Harvey Elliott one, which is perhaps where the Reds are finding a little bit of resistance:

Anfield Watch Verdict

There's still plenty of time for something to be sorted but this is something to keep in mind.

Carvalho is a good young player and one that would excel at Liverpool.

The Reds need to be careful, though, as Fulham won't want to be mucked around.

Watford's Domingos Quina to switch Fulham for Barnsley loan

Watford midfielder Domingos Quina is closing in on a loan move to Barnsley, with his current deal at Fulham to be terminated.

The Portuguese joined the Cottagers during the summer transfer window, but has struggled for game time at Craven Cottage, having made just four appearances since his move and been included in just one squad since October.

At that time, Fulham boss Marco Silva questioned the player's work rate and said that he needed to put in more of an effort in training in order to work his way back into the team, saying: "Domingos has to work harder to win back his place.

"He got his chance and that is clear by getting in the starting 11 against Leeds and Blackpool, and it was not just a matter of performance, but in the training sessions as well.

"He is fit, but was not in the squad the last game – a technical decision and it was mine."

At the beginning of the January transfer window, the Watford Observer reported that the plan was to try and find a new loan deal this month that would allow him to play more football.

Prior to his loan to Fulham, the midfielder signed a new deal at Watford until 2024, so it is in the club's interest to find him a move that will allow him to play more regularly.

However, it has not been a priority for the Hornets, with the acquisition of defensive targets top of their to-do list.

With four new arrivals brought in, Watford are now in a position to move players out and are also working on resolving Quina's situation.

Initial talks were held with Swansea City but a move to the Tykes is now on the horizon, with sources close to the player describing the deal as "90 per cent done".

EXCLUSIVE: Dundee United closing in on deal for ex-Dundee star Kevin McDonald

Dundee United are set to seal a deal for ex-Fulham and Dundee star Kevin McDonald.

The free agent midfielder impressed United head coach Tam Courts during a training stint with the Tangerines earlier in January – and Courier Sport understands talks between player and club are now at an advanced stage.

Should negotiations continue as expected, McDonald will be in line to make his United debut in Tuesday night's Dundee derby at Dens Park.

McDonald, who has fought his way back to fitness following a kidney transplant, trained with first club Dundee in October 2021 and impressed Dark Blues boss James McPake.

He arrived at United's St Andrew's training base after the New Year, before spending time working with St Johnstone last week.

But United now look set to welcome the five-times-capped Scotland star into the fold as they look to secure a top six Premiership finish.

McDonald came through the ranks with Dundee before securing a move to England with Burnley.

He enjoyed an impressive career down south, collectively clocking up hundreds of appearances for the Clarets, Sheffield United and Wolves before joining Fulham, where his dominant midfield performances made him a hero to fans.

McDonald close to Dundee United deal

Former Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald is poised to resume his playing career at Dundee United, according to reports from Scotland this afternoon.

The Courier says that the former Scotland international, released by Fulham in the summer, had impressed during his recent spell training with Dundee United and is close to concluding a short-term deal to join United. The Tangerines have been eager to bolster their midfield options and McDonald's potential arrival sets up an intriguing United debut against his first club Dundee in Tuesday's derby.

McDonald, who was contemplating retirement before a successful kidney transplant earlier this year, made 128 appearances in five years at Craven Cottage – twice winning promotion to the Premier League with Fulham.

Barnsley in talks to sign Watford midfielder Domingos Quina on loan

Barnsley and Watford are reportedly in talks regarding a loan move for midfielder Domingos Quina.

The midfielder is currently out on loan at Fulham, but his parent club are looking to recall him and send him out to another Championship side where he can gain further game time.

A number of clubs are reportedly interested in taking the player until the end of the season, but Football Insider states that it is Barnsley who have entered talks over a deal for Quina.

More on Quina...
Quina has experienced a difficult campaign minutes-wise so far, making just two appearances for a Cottagers side who sit top of the Championship table. There was the option for the Portuguese playmaker to move across London in a permanent deal, but a move elsewhere now looks likely.

The 22-year-old made his way through both Chelsea and West Ham's youth ranks before moving to the Hornets in 2018, for whom he has made 37 appearances in total across multiple competitions.

This will mark Quina's third loan spell in two years, after also completing a short stint at Spanish side Granada.

Where will Quina fit in at Barnsley?
If the move is finalised before the end of the window, the midfielder will be joining a Barnsley side struggling at the bottom of the second tier. The Tykes have even been passed by Derby County, who have experienced multiple point deductions since the beginning of the season.

Under the management of Poya Asbaghi, Barnsley have often utilised a 3-5-2 formation, which could see Quina perform across a number of positions. The Yorkshire side will certainly be gaining a player with Championship experience and flair that they have so far lacked.

Barnsley's next matchup comes on Wednesday, as they take on fellow strugglers Cardiff City in a crucial tie. Tykes' fans will be hoping their squad has been added to by the end of the day as they look to climb out of the relegation zone.

Club Brugge in Odoi talks

Club Brugge are in talks with Fulham about a deal to sign Denis Odoi, according to reports from Belgium this afternoon.

The 33 year-old utility man has featured extensively for the Championship league leaders this season, largely deputising at right back for the injured Kenny Tete. Odoi, who filled that role again during Saturday's draw with Blackpool, has made 177 appearances – scoring seven goals – since moving to Craven Cottage from Lokeren in July 2016.

The Belgian international's current contract expires at the end of the season and Odoi has been regularly linked with a return to his homeland. The likeable defender's departure would leave Fulham short of senior right backs with Tete doubtful for the FA Cup trip to Manchester City next weekend after he injured his groin in the win at Stoke earlier this month.

Plymouth Argyle could seal swoop for 21-year-old Fulham man

Plymouth Argyle could be set for a transfer deadline day swoop for Fulham's Steven Sessegnon, as reported by talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook.

The League One side have been involved in a promotion push in the third tier this year despite losing boss Ryan Lowe and the addition of someone like Sessegnon could be a real boost to them for the second half of the season.

The 21-year-old has never played below Championship level as of yet and after doing some solid work for both his current club Fulham and Bristol City, he could certainly make the drop down to Plymouth with ease – and could be a real force for them if a deal is agreed.

Any agreement would only see the youngster join Argyle on a deal until the end of the season though, with the Cottagers not letting the player leave on a permanent basis. This will also be a blow to Hull, who had also been considering a bid for the player according to this report from Alex Crook.

The Tigers themselves have been trying to strengthen for a completely different reason, with the side locked in a relegation battle. However, it appears Sessegnon will take on the challenge of a promotion bid rather than a relegation fight.

Having not yet featured for Fulham in the league so far this season, it should be a win-win for both the 21-year-old and his parent club, with the player able to get more regular gametime and the Cottagers allowing him to develop elsewhere while there is currently no room for him in their starting eleven.

The Verdict

Steven Sessegnon could be an exceptional signing for Plymouth, even if it is only until the end of the season. It is a signing that should surely excite Argyle fans and is exactly the type of deal they should be pursuing.

The 21-year-old is very experienced in terms of Championship football and the player has been able to hold his own in that division on a regular basis when given the chance. When he was at Bristol City for example, he managed only 16 appearances but still looked fairly bright at times.

If Plymouth can land him, they would certainly allow him a lot more time on the field – and that could help him to thrive given the fact that he wouldn't be in and out of the team. If he can do a decent job in the second tier too, then the third tier should certainly be enough for him to handle.

If he can rediscover the kind of form that made him one of the most promising talents in the EFL – alongside his relatives – then Plymouth could really be boosted by his signing if they land him today.

Plymouth plotting Sessegnon loan

Plymouth Argyle are keen on taking Fulham full back Steven Sessegnon on loan for the remainder of the season.

Talksport reporter Alex Crook has revealed that the Pilgrims are eager to offer the England under-21 international regular first-team football. Sessegnon has only featured for Fulham's under 23s so far this season and is keen to play senior football again.

Marco Silva is willing to allow the 21 year-old defender out on loan but there is expected to be fierce competition for Sessegnon's signature. A number of Championship clubs are reportedly interested in signing Sessegnon, including Hull City, whose interest surfaced over the weekend. The Fulham academy graduate has made nineteen senior appearances for the Whites and spent time on loan at Bristol City last season.

Fulham man emerges as subject of European deadline day interest

Fulham defender Denis Odoi is attracting interest from Club Brugge, a report from Belgian outlet HLN has claimed.

Odoi joined Fulham from Lokeren in his native Belgium back in the the summer of 2016, and has since become a regular feature for the club.

The now 33-year-old has made a total of 177 appearances in all competitions for the Cottagers, scoring seven goals and twice helping the club win promotion from the Championship.

Now however, it seems the right-back is once again attracting attention from back in his home country.

According to this latest update, Club Brugge, who currently sit second in the Belgian top-flight, are in talks with Fulham over a move for Odoi, before the January window closes later today.

As things stand, Odoi's contract with Fulham is set to expire at the end of this season, meaning this could be the Cottagers last chance to receive some sort of fee for the full-back.

The Verdict

You do feel that agreeing to a deal for Odoi to leave now could be something of a risk for Fulham.

Admittedly, a sale could be tempting now, given the defender's contract situation means this is their last chance to receive some useful funds that could be reinvested in the club.

But with Kenny Tete out injured, and having loaned Cyrus Christie to Swansea earlier in the window, allowing Odoi to leave could leave them short on the right-hand side of defence.

That may not be a chance Fulham want to take at this stage in a promotion battle, and given the 33-year-old is a popular figure at Craven Cottage, there are unlikely to be many complaining if this deal does now go through.

Rumour Mongering: Fulham Demanding £15M for Fabio Carvalho

The Championship club would lose the player for next to nothing if he joins a club outside England in the summer.

After securing Luis Diaz from FC Porto in a £37.5M deal that could rise to £50M with add-ons, Liverpool quickly turned their attention to trying to get a transfer sorted for Fulham rising star 19-year-old Fabio Carvalho.

The Reds have reportedly offered at least £5M for the young player, who is out of contract in the summer, with some suggestion they might be willing to go to £7M including add-ons for the Championship's standout young attacker.

They would also be willing to let the player remain at Craven Cottage for the remainder of the year. Fulham, though, are said to be holding out for £15M for the England youth international who is out of contract in the summer.

That has led to speculation that a deal could be off given such a fee well exceeds what the Reds believe the talented youngster would cost if he signed on a free and Fulham's compensation is determined by tribunal.

There have also been whispers that if the Reds can't sign find a compromise with Fulham today they might not return in the summer given clubs outside England would only have to pay a low six-figure compensation fee to Fulham.

While youngsters moving within England sees the FA determine compensation on a case by case basis, a move to a continental club would take place under UEFA's rules which set compensation at a much lower fixed rate.

For Fulham, then, while there might be hope in a tribunal awarding them a fee in excess of what Liverpool are currently offering if they don't sell the player now, there would also be the risk of losing him for next to nothing.

Liverpool can use Porto interest in Fabio Carvalho to pull off ideal transfer plan

Porto are keen on a deal for Liverpool target Fabio Carvalho next season and the Reds could use it to their advantage

Liverpool are continuing to chase Fabio Carvalho.

The 19-year-old Fulham winger, who has been a revelation for the top-of-the-table Cottagers in the Championship this season, has been the subject of a £5m bid from Liverpool.

It remains to be seen how the situation will play out today, with suggestions Fulham are holding firm on the Portuguese starlet, wanting more money as well as loaning him back for the remainder of the campaign.

Adding Carvalho before the January transfer window closes this evening would represent a fine few days business for the Reds, who landed a summer target early when they swooped for Porto winger Luis Diaz on Sunday for a fee that could rise as high as £49m.

Diaz was Porto's star and the best player plying his trade in Portugal's Primeira Liga this season, with the 25-year-old Colombian winger having been courted by a number of clubs.

Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur to the punch in getting his signature after Spurs move an initial move last week.

In losing Diaz, Porto are significantly weakened. A club that currently leads the division and that is chasing Champions League football are in need of finding the next talismanic figure to aid them next season.

One player who could fit that bill is Carvalho himself, with Porto believed to have been keeping tabs on the player who is out of contract this summer.

Pascoal Sousa, a journalist with Portuguese news outlet 'A Bola' told the ECHO: "He's a player that Porto wants.

"They are looking at the summer. They are very interested in him.

"If Liverpool buys him then who knows, he could head to Porto. It is something that could happen."

Compensation would have to be paid for Carvalho if he did leave Craven Cottage in the summer, with English clubs liable to pay more than the £5m that Liverpool have already offered due to the tribunal rules in English football going further than those in the rest of Europe by virtue of the the Professional Football Compensation Committee (PFCC), designed to protect the interests of English football clubs who produce talent through their own systems.

Clubs from other European leagues such as Portugal would be able to take him for far less, with a nominal fee only having to be paid for training compensation as per FIFA rules.

Liverpool are hoping to avoid such issues by signing Carvalho before the window closes and loaning him back to Fulham.

If they were to pull that off, then it indicates they likely see the 19-year-old a long-term project and would potentially seek to find him some further game time out on loan.

It is conceivable that could be back in Portugal, the country of Carvalho's birth - and possibly with Diaz's former club.

In Porto they already have the option, it seems, to place the youngster at a high level and give him a taste of Champions League football.

That kind of experience could work for all parties.

Carvalho is now an England youth international, but was born in Lisbon and was a junior with Benfica before moving to the UK in 2013.

Liverpool and Porto have a strong relationship through deals struck with the likes of Diaz and Marko Grujic.

And should the Carvalho move play out today, more business may be on the cards on the near future.

Quina set for Barnsley medical

Domingos Quina will have a medical at Barnsley this afternoon ahead of a proposed loan move to the Championship's bottom club.

Watford and Fulham are willing to terminate the Portuguese midfielder's loan deal at Craven Cottage after he made just four appearances under Marco Silva, who is understood to have been disappointed in his application. The 21 year-old is eager to play regular football and his loan to Oakwell is reported by the Athletic to not include an option to buy.

Plymouth Argyle looking to secure loan deal for Fulham defender Steven Sessegnon

Fulham defender Steven Sessegnon is reportedly a loan target for Plymouth Argyle, with the club looking to bring him in before the window slams shut.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a winter move away from Fulham, with Hull City supposedly planning a move for his signature.

Sessegnon has performed in multiple roles for a number of Championship sides in the past, and it seems the next step in his personal development is to head to League One promotion hopefuls Plymouth. Alex Crook, reporter for talkSPORT, states that the youngster could link up with Steven Schumacher's side today.

More on Sessegnon

The defender has spent all of his permanent professional career at the West London side. After breaking through Fulham's academy alongside his brother Ryan, Sessegnon has made 19 appearances in total across all competitions.

Unfortunately for the right-back, he has struggled for senior game time this season and has been subjected to Under-23s football without any first team appearances. He made 15 appearances in Fulham's previous promotion campaign and began to show signs of improvement under the management of Scott Parker.

Sessegnon also enjoyed a loan spell at Championship side Bristol City last time out, where he made 18 appearances in the league for the Robins.

Where will Sessegnon fit in at Plymouth?

Plymouth have regularly played with a back three formation this season, which, until recently, saw them firmly placed in the League One play-off positions at least. Losing manager Ryan Lowe to Preston and other key members has seen their form falter somewhat, and Sessegnon would be joining a club hopeful of turning their season back in the right direction.

The 21-year-old has performed at right-back, wing-back and midfield during his professional career. This versatility could make for a shrewd signing, and one which would fill a gap in a number of positions for the Pilgrims.

Plymouth's next game takes place this Saturday, as they travel to London to take on Chelsea in an FA Cup fourth-round tie. Supporters will be hoping their club can make a few last-minute details before entering the second half of the league season.
