I cant get my head round how it must feel to run the digital marketing of a product that you spend 100 of £1000's on a  marketing campaign that concentrates solely on the fact that you have systems in place to stop you using the product.

I hadn't really paid much attention to them but its pretty much across the board. Prime time adverts just saying dont use us too much. Obviously, a serious problem.

Without intending to take the moral high ground (although I might be) Redknapp, Michael Owen, Ray Winstone et al, kinda sold their soul.

I never really understood the appeal. But my dad did. Apparently.

It amazes me that in this age of political correctness gone mad that gambling is being allowed so much prominence in the media.

Given what has happened to smoking and drinking in the media, I'd imagine that it won't take long to ban gambling advertising. No bad thing too. I'd imagine that this vice has ruined a number of lives as has smoking + drinking.

While many debate the impact of advertising, I can remember the local tobacconist near our school running out of Piccadilly cigarettes when The Sweeney (for those of you old enough to remember) were on TV as that was what Jack Regan used to smoke and we'd all want a pack the next day

Agreed with the above. I dare say gambling may have ruined more lives than smoking! Okay smoking causes a painful death, but it doesnt leave you out on your bottom on the street, penniless, in debt to friends and family or loan companies and alienated from your children

The sooner it's banned from all forms of advertising the better

A colleague worked for one of the big companies & one of his roles was to phone people identified as potentially problem gamblers to talk it through.  No surprise that on his first day he was told not to bother phoning anyone as it was a waste of time & resources.

The old 'PC gone mad' line, Christ when are people going to move on from that ridiculous guff. 064.gif

I don't gamble but have seen what it can do to lives and I am amazed that it is allowed to be advertised, especially as heavily as it is. Its pretty unpleasant stuff really.

I always wonder what how the so called celebs, who advertise gambling, feel when they read or hear of someone who has taken their own life due to gambling debts.

Well betting firms rightly get it in the neck. But as we are talking about adverts. Are they any worse than having galloping horses running through the fields at the delight of people watching them. Only to advertise a bank who frankly has done more harm than most betting firms.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I'm not anti or pro gambling adverts, sponsorships or anything really. Just curious if the National lottery is included in this, as that is also gambling and have equally dangerous hook ins such as scratch cards and win 30 grand a month for life or what ever it is.

HobGoblin

I avoid the adverts like the plague. Winstone and Redknapp have the most annoying voices at the best of times. That added to the odious business they are promoting keeps me far away from ever wanting to gamble other than on the national as a family event.

Just curious how you figure that Lloyds have done more harm than most betting firms? I can't think of a way to compare.

Paul Merson writes in his moving autobiography Hooked, about being addicted to gambling, as well as booze and cocaine.

I think he says gambling was the worst addiction, and he'd spend fortunes every week despite all the supposed constraints.

He wasn't bothered about winning - if he'd won he'd just go on and lose it all, and doesn't really manage to explain the appeal - something to do with the  excitement and danger, and losing yourself, as in  booze and coke  - and only that's it's an example of his general feelings of worthlessness and self-hatred, and feeling a total disaster as a person - though he did manage to become  top pro footballer, while having all these  problems - and he wasn't alone amongst pro's at the time!

Why is it so easy seemingly, still, for people with a problem to continue gambling, which is freely advertised? Well cynically perhaps,  if obviously, so much money is made out of it.

The government has plans to make this country smoke-free, with smoking banned in all public places.
Well 1, like all banned drugs this will just drive it underground, make money for criminals and criminalise addicts, rather than looking at causes for addiction, giving them treatment, rather than locking them up  and 2, They propose to continue to  advance vaping as a safe cigarette smoking  substitute, and make it available through the NHS. Well, vaping is by no means
determined as totally safe, and some doctors say it's worse than ****, and some countries, and States in the US, have banned it;
BUT the *** manufacturers and others can continue to make loads of money from people's addiction to smoking - just sell them vapes.

Just a few thoughts, people can disagree with me.

Not sure this is the place to discuss jobs lost at the bank, or the huge profits that were lost or how many people are affected by the banks mismanagement. Or indeed the banking sector as a whole.

I agree with that but the difference is that banks are addictive I suppose.  They are just hideous, hideous institutions.

I get it. It's quite baffling to see marketing campaigns emphasizing limitations, especially when people enjoy a product. I really enjoy 2nd half college football picks, for instance. And you're right, it's interesting to see familiar faces endorsing these messages. Sometimes, it's all about balance, I guess. Anyway, it's always good to have conversations about these things. Take care and enjoy your day!

I have watched the Sweeney countless times but never noticed what they smoked, perhaps this product placement worked and explains why my dad used to smoke Piccadilly cigarettes

If a bank says we have paid no interest. But now with the help of our mismanagement of the economy. We can offer you higher interest rates if you put your money in one or more or the plethora of offers we have for different accounts. The higher the interest the longer you have to keep away from your own money.........That is betting and does far more harm.

Now betting organisations offer a dream. The same as the lottery. Let's pretend you can win and think how happy you will be.

It is no deference than any drug that gets you hooked. But then our entire financial system and society is based on the same betting idea. How much money are you willing to give us for higher interest where we don't allow you access to your own money without a punishment.

They only emphasise the fact that there are systems in place to prevent "over gambling" because if they didn't, they wouldn't be allowed to operate.

The reality is they know that those systems don't work and phrases like "stop when the fun stops" are completely meaningless to a compulsive gambler.

I work within the same industry and can promise you I get those calls quite requently, but the logistics are terrible,

In the shop and in comes a known big spender, reached a loss of 8k, and I know that's not all because I kept having to knock back his stakes because we wouldn't take stakes on dogs or horses that high, but I can see after that he pulls out his phone and uses sites to replace the money I've not allowed him to stake.

So 8k lost in my shop alone plus whatever on his phone, guys clearly quite stressed and manic but I will also say, nothing out the ordinary for the guy. As this is happening, I have many other customers also placing bets, in shop who clearly can see this guy is spending big, I'm all alone in the shop, no one working with me and I get a call from these guys about the customer while he's still in shop.

So I've got the phone in my shoulder while dipping bets endlessly, its a busy morning.
And the safer gambling team on the phone ask me to have an affordability meeting with the customer losing big.

I even said to the guy on the phone, and how am I suppose to be doing this? On my own in shop with other customers betting sensibly but no sorry everyone, I must turn off my till and go sit on the shop floor for half an hour with this guy who definitely won't want to talk to me. No ones allowed any bets on right now because the guy I'm about to talk to has lost a load of money.

This is wrong in all senses, it's singling out the guy, highlighting to everyone else he's losing and people like their betting more private. And me leaving my counter area is a great risk. People will know I have a large sum of money behind the counter. Customer will be wanting the money he's lost back. Massive safety risk to me and the shop.

And where does the line be drawn. That guy wanted to place the bets, I even made him take a break and leave the shop, I said after this bet, I'm not serving you anymore for at least an hour. The guy comes back in 2 hours to spend more. You can try and try nudge them in the right direction. You can give them time to think but they will do what they want.

As for the safer gambling adverts, it really just gets your product out there, problem gamblers walks down the street thinking of their mums birthday, sees a safer gambling advert, won't think oh maybe I need help, or even if they do, the advert has still worked in some sense as that person is now thinking of gambling.

It's powerful people making money from it that allows it to continue.
