Fulham snap up goalkeeper Steven Benda on a three-year deal... with German shot-stopper to fight with Bernd Leno and Marek Rodak to be No 1 at Craven Cottage

Marco Silva has further bolstered competition in his goalkeeping department
Steven Benda established himself as Swansea City's No 1 before injury struck

Fulham have signed goalkeeper Steven Benda from Swansea City on a three-year deal.

Benda, 24, has put pen-to-paper on a deal until 2026 at Craven Cottage, with Fulham holding an option to extend it a further year.

'I'm really happy. It's a massive club with a lot of history and tradition, so I'm really happy to be here,' Benda told FFCtv after signing.

'Just look at this stadium, and the Club itself, playing for Marco Silva, it was a very easy decision.'

He will provide extra competition to both Bernd Leno and Marek Rodak for the No 1 spot in west London.

Fulham have snapped up German goalkeeper Steven Benda from second tier Swansea City

'I'm pleased to welcome Steven Benda to Fulham,' vice chairman Tony Khan added.

'He's a talented young goalkeeper, and while he's currently recovering from injury, we've monitored him for some time and believe that he'll be a valuable addition to Marco's squad upon his return.'

A serious knee injury has halted Benda's progress, but he will hope for a fresh start in the English capital.

He made the move to Swansea back in 2017 from 1860 Munich, going on to make 31 senior appearances in total.

Asked about losing one of his main goalkeepers late in the window, Swansea boss Michael Duff was keen to look forward, not back.

'Steven made it clear he wasn't going to sign a new contract,' Duff said after Tuesday's 3-2 Carabao Cup loss to Bournemouth.

'We probably wouldn't have seen him until January so are we in a position to turn down the money for a goalkeeper that would have only been available for three or four months?

'We think we've got a good goalkeeper in Carl [Rushworth] anyway.'

Man City vs Fulham injury & team news: Two doubts and two ruled out of Premier League clash

Manchester City and Fulham have just four injury concerns between them ahead of Saturday's match.

Manchester City will hope Manuel Akanji is available for Saturday's Premier League clash against Fulham.

The Swiss defender missed last weekend's win over Sheffield United with a minor knock but could be an option for Saturday's game at the Etihad. The champions will be looking to make it four wins from four to begin the new campaign, having already dispatched Burnley, Newcastle United and Sheffield United.

The clash against Marco Silva's side will be the last match before September's international break, and it will also be Juanma Lillo's final game in charge before Pep Guardiola returns. The City boss is continuing to recuperate in Barcelona following surgery on his back last week.

In the meantime, Lillo is expected to be without John Stones and Kevin De Bruyne for the clash against Fulham. The latter is suffering from a long-term hamstring injury and may not play again this year, while Stones could make his return after the international break.

As for the opposition, Fulham have an almost fully-fit squad for their trip to Manchester. Willian is suffering from a minor knock and has been forced to sit out the last two, but may be back in for this weekend.

Silva will also be able to call upon Calvin Bassey, despite the defender being sent off in last Saturday's 2-2 draw against Arsenal. He served his one-match ban in the midweek Carabao Cup tie at home to Tottenham Hotspur, a game the Cottagers won on penalties.

Fulham named a strong side for the second-round encounter, but are expected to recall Bernd Leno, Andreas Pereira and Raul Jimenez at the Etihad. Tim Ream, who has also been sent off in the league this season, is available again, while recent signing Timothy Castagne could be an option for the London club.

Doubts: Akanji (City); Willian (Fulham). Ruled out: Stones, De Bruyne (City)

Fulham: The Telegraph make interesting Niclas Fullkrug claim
The Werder Bremen star is liked by Silva.

A report has shared an interesting bit of news on Fulham and Marco Silva's late transfer plans - and it involves Werder Bremen star Niclas Fullkrug.

Who will Fulham sign?
The Whites have been tipped to be one of the busier clubs of these last few days of the transfer window.

Fulham, for their part, have started the new Premier League campaign with some impressive results - perhaps most notably a dramatic 2-2 draw away to title-chasing Arsenal last weekend.

Joao Palhinha'a last gasp equaliser secured a well-earned point for the travelling side and put to bed their disappointing 3-0 loss away to Aston Villa the week before.

Fulham have also knocked Spurs out of the Carabai Cup after their second round penalty shoot out win over Ange Postecoglou's side on Tuesday, giving Silva's men something positive to build upon over the next few weeks.

Silva's side may need to strengthen further in various departments after already-completing the singings of defender Calvin Bassey, Raul Jimenez, Adama Traore and, most recently, defender Timothy Castagne from Leicester City.

Speaking after Fulham sealed a deal for Castagne, the club's vice-chairman Tony Khan raved over the Belgium international's versatility and quality, explaining his delight at the signing.

"I'm excited to welcome Timothy Castagne to Fulham," said Khan (via The BBC).

"He's a versatile and very talented defender with great experience in the Premier League and international competition for Belgium.

"I'm pleased that Timothy has committed to a four-year contract with us, and we believe that he'll be an excellent addition to Marco's squad."

Fulham are believed to be eyeing a host of late moves after the aforementioned quartet's arrival, including the likes of Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi.

Following the departure of Serbia international Aleksandar Mitrovic, who joined Saudi side Al-Hilal earlier this month, the need for a proven striker is also a prevalent one.

Fulham agreed a fee to sign Ocampos from Sevilla, but according to an interesting claim from The Telegraph, Silva would "ideally like" another forward.

Indeed, Bremen striker Fullkrug is apparently that player, but there is a problem in the form of his club.

The Bundesliga side, despite Silva's wishes to bring Fullkrug to Craven Cottage, are unwilling to sell their star striker who scored 16 goals and registered five assists in the Bundesliga last season.

Who is Niclas Fullkrug?
Fullkrug, beyond his impressive goal haul last term, has also been praised by Germany footballing legend Miroslav Klose.

Klose, speaking to Bild late last year (via Buli News), called the Fullkrug's attitude "exemplary" and explained how he is a great player.

"He has a certain presence in the penalty box and a good nose for situations," said Klose.

"He brings a good package for a striker: good finishing inside the box, he's two footed and strong with headers.

"I heard his interviews after the Spain game and immediately noticed that he doesn't get carried away. He knows that more still has to come. When I see how he conducts himself and from what I heard from the team, I can only say: that's exemplary. Football needs such guys."

Midfielder Liverpool keen on wants to join Bayern Munich now
Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool have been linked with Joao Palhinha, but it seems that the Fulham defensive midfielder wants to move to Bayern Munich, not to Anfield.

Liverpool are on the hunt for a new midfielder in the final days of the summer transfer window, and one of the players the Reds are reportedly looking at is Fulham star Joao Palhinha.

The Daily Mail reported this month that Liverpool want to sign Palhinha in the summer transfer window.

The former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners are reportedly looking for a new defensive midfielder and believe that the £50,000-a-week (Spotrac) star would be a good signing.

However, there is now a chance that Liverpool would not be able to get the 28-year-old Portugal international.

Liverpool target Joao Palhinha wants to join Bayern Munich
There is speculation now that Palhinha wants to join Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has reported on Twitter that Bayern want to sign the 28-year-old, who himself is keen on a move to the Allianz Arena.

Plettenberg has claimed that personal terms would not be an issue for the Portugal international.

Bayern are one of the biggest clubs in the world and are a global brand.

Just like Liverpool.

And they also regularly win the Bundesliga title and compete for the UEFA Champions League.

We understand fully well why a move to Bayern would be so appealing to Palhinha.

If Liverpool are really keen on Palhinha, then they have to make a bid now and convince the player to move to Anfield.

Now.

Time is running out for Liverpool.

After all, the summer transfer window closes on Friday night.

Palhinha has made 37 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career.

The Portuguese star has scored four goals in those games.

Bayern Munich 'make £50m offer for Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha'
Bayern Munich have reportedly made a £50m bid for Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha.

Throughout the summer transfer window, head coach Thomas Tuchel has been eager to stamp his own mark on a squad that barely defended their Bundesliga title in 2022-23.

Daniel Peretz, Raphael Guerreiro, Kim Min-Jae, Konrad Laimer and Harry Kane have all made the switch to the Allianz Arena to replace the players that have departed for pastures new.

However, uncertainty remains over Tuchel's midfield options with Ryan Gravenberch seemingly edging closer to making the switch to Liverpool before Friday's transfer deadline.

Although the Netherlands international has failed to move up the pecking order under Tuchel, he remains a high-quality alternative, and Bayern would need to act if he left for Anfield.

Bayern have been linked with a number of players in recent days, including the versatile Trevoh Chalobah and midfielder Conor Gallagher from Chelsea.

Nevertheless, according to The Telegraph, the German giants have instead opted to focus their attention on getting a deal over the line for Palhinha.

The report claims that a proposal worth £50m has been put forward to test Fulham's resolve over a player that they deem to be their key man.

Palhinha, who cost in the region of £20m last summer, has contributed five goals from 43 appearances, his latest being an equaliser at Arsenal on Saturday, but it is his physical presence and tackling ability that make him vital to Marco Silva's side.

While the Cottagers boss would prefer to retain the 28-year-old's services, Palhinha is said to be in favour of moving to Bayern before close of business on Friday.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano adds that Fulham will only allow Palhinha to leave at this stage of the transfer window if they are able to find a suitable replacement.

Fulham are not well-stocked in central midfield with Harrison Reed, Sasa Lukic, Andreas Pereira and Tom Cairney currently their other options.

Alex Iwobi may be signed from Everton and can be used in a midfield three, but he does not possess the defensive-minded capabilities of Palhinha.

Fulham sign Swansea City goalkeeper
Fulham have completed the signing of Swansea City goalkeeper Steven Benda for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old has put pen to paper on a contract until at least the summer of 2026. The Whites also have an option to extend by a further 12 months.

Benda told the Fulham's website: "I'm really happy. It's a massive club with a lot of history and tradition, so I'm really happy to be here.

"Just look at this stadium, and the club itself, playing for Marco Silva, it was a very easy decision."

The German keeper is sidelined with a knee injury.

Swansea manager Michael Duff said: "Steven made it clear he wasn't going to sign a new contract.

"We probably wouldn't have seen him until January so are we in a position to turn down the money for a goalkeeper that would have only been available for three or four months?

"We think we've got a good goalkeeper in Carl [Rushworth] anyway."

Transfers: Fulham preparing ₦20billion bid for Michelle Alozie's Super Eagles crush
Fulham want to add some bite to their attack, and Iwobi could give them a boost

English Premier League club Fulham are preparing a £20million[₦20billion] bid for Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi, Soccernet reports.

Iwobi is currently one of the best players at Everton. He joined the club from Arsenal for €30million in 2019, but he took two years to settle into the club finally.

He was key in their Premier League survival two seasons ago and also played a crucial role for them last season, registering two goals and eight assists in 40 appearances last season.

Iwobi's contract with Everton expires at the end of the season, but he has not agreed to sign a new deal.

Meanwhile, Fulham are looking to add some creativity to their attack after they lost star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic to Al Hilal last week.

Earlier, Soccernet reported that the Cottagers have opened talks with Everton for the Super Eagles creative midfielder.

In the latest development, according to the Daily Mail, Fulham will offer Everton £20million to get Iwobi this summer.

Everton may be under pressure to accept the bid because of their poor finances. Also, they risk losing Iwobi for free next June if he refuses to sign an extension.

Iwobi is currently one of the best Nigerian players in Europe. His looks and brilliance on the pitch have even endeared him to Super Falcons star Michelle Alozie.

In profile: Steven Benda

Jack Stroudley looks at our signing between the sticks.

If you'd have given me a list of positions with priority to focus on before the deadline tomorrow evening, a keeper would've been quite low down on that list. Alas, Fulham have confirmed the signing of Steven Benda from Swansea on a three-year contract for a fee of £745,000. There have been murmurings in recent days about Marek Rodak wanting to seek first team football with a loan to the Championship potentially on the horizon. As a result of this, Fulham needed to find a 'back-up' quickly.

The fact file
Benda's youth career started out in Germany playing for 1. FC Heidenheim and TSV 1860 Munich before moving to Swansea City on a youth deal in 2017. The now 24-year-old clearly impressed earning a three-year contract in June 2019 before being sent out on his first loan to Swindon Town to play League Two football. Benda was a key starter for the Robins and played 27 times across all competitions during a campaign which ultimately saw Swindon Town win League Two.

The German keeper would then head back to Wales to deputise for Freddie Woodman for the 2019/20 season. Benda would get another loan move a season later to fellow Championship side Peterborough United and while he would only play nine league fixtures, he would certainly impress in those (a fixture at Craven Cottage springs to mind...) before heading back to Swansea once again where he played 21 times last season before picking up an injury.

A deeper dive
Across the top eight divisions, Benda is pretty low down for touches on the ball with just 33 per game. This could be down to how Russell Martin had Swansea City playing last season as the ball was a lot higher up the pitch for larger durations. He's also solid at collecting crosses and has a 100% success rate (in the last 365 days) of saving penalties.

Bernd Leno (yellow) compared to Steven Benda (green) for the 2022/23 season. All data from DataMb.

Going off of this, it's clear to see that Leno is the much better keeper than Benda (as to be expected) but there's still some stats to be excited about. His passing is high as well as defensive actions. That being said, his shot-stopping is worryingly low.

The final verdict
It's not exactly a signing to get excited about but if Rodak is out the door a back-up keeper was necessary and I think for the fee paid there isn't too much to complain about. Just under £750,000 for someone who has played regularly in the Championship, has impressed the fans of his former club and is still only 24, it's a yes from me.

Report: Fulham Secure Championship's Best Keeper
Fulham Secure Steven Benda in Goalkeeper Shakeup

As Fulham strives to bolster their strength between the sticks, a new name has emerged to challenge the status quo.

Fulham's New Acquisition
BBC Sport are reporting that The Cottagers have successfully added to their goalkeeping arsenal, securing the signature of the German sensation, Steven Benda. The 24-year-old makes his switch from Swansea City, penning a deal that binds him to Craven Cottage until 2026, along with the enticing possibility of another year.

Benda's Career Path
Having cemented his place in Swansea City's starting XI last season, the goalkeeper's journey in the Championship has been quite the rollercoaster. Initiated into the squad back in August 2017 after transferring from 1860 Munich, Benda demonstrated unwavering commitment to the Swans, renewing his contracts in 2019 and again in 2021, which previously set his tenure with the team till July 2024.

Lure of Fulham
Expressing sheer delight at his latest move, Benda emphasised the simplicity of his decision:

"I'm really happy. It's a massive club with a lot of history and tradition."

The stature of Fulham, its iconic stadium, and the opportunity to play under the tactical acumen of Marco Silva clearly left an indelible mark on the young keeper.

Injury Clouds and Future Prospects
However, the joy surrounding his transfer might be slightly subdued, with Benda nursing a knee injury. His full return might only materialise midway through the 2023-24 campaign. But, every cloud has its silver lining. For Fulham, it's a testament to their long-term vision.

After Swansea's recent 3-2 EFL Cup upset against Bournemouth, manager Michael Duff addressed the departure of Benda: "Steven made it clear he wasn't going to sign a new contract... We think we've got a good goalkeeper in Carl [Rushworth] anyway."

So, while Steven Benda prepares to don the Fulham jersey, the larger question looms – what will this mean for the Premier League side's aspirations?

Sources: Fulham ready to hijack Nottingham Forest deal as Palhinha move edges closer
Fulham are ready to hijack Nottingham Forest's deal for Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana as they look to get a replacement lined up for Bayern Munich target Joao Palhina, sources have told Football Insider.

Fulham are drawing up a list of targets in case they lose Palhina to Bayern in the final 48 hours of the window and Fofana figures highly on their list.

Fofana, 24, has been held talks over joining Forest, but now Fulham could now ambush their Premier League rivals by agreeing a deal for the France international.

On Wednesday (30 August), Football Insider revealed that Bayern are stepping up their pursuit of Palhinha and are ready to test the English club's resolve ahead of the close of the transfer window on Friday (1 September).

Thomas Tuchel has made the 28-year-old his top target as he looks for a defensive-minded midfielder to add to his ranks.

Fulham are reluctant to lose Palhinha so late in the window but have picked out Fofana as a replacement should they lose their current star.

Fofana's current contract at Monaco runs until 2024 but includes the option of a further year.

The Frenchman joined the Ligue 1 club from Strasbourg in 2020 and has made 143 appearances in that time, netting three goals and offering up 11 assists.

Fulham have started their 2023-24 campaign well.

The Cottagers rescued a point against last season's runners-up Arsenal on Saturday (26 August) before knocking Tottenham out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday (29 August).

"It's noise" – Everton boss Sean Dyche reacts to Alex Iwobi's exit links amid Fulham interest
In the midst of swirling speculations regarding the future of Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi, manager Sean Dyche has chosen to tread carefully, Soccernet.ng reacts.

Reports have surfaced suggesting that Iwobi is on the verge of a transfer to fellow Premier League outfit Fulham.

As the clock ticks towards the 11 pm deadline on Friday, the two clubs remain engaged in discussions over a potential £20 million deal for the Nigerian international, as per the Daily Mail.

Iwobi was absent from Everton's squad during their EFL Cup comeback victory against Doncaster Rovers on August 30th due to injury. Still, it has done little to cool speculations in the transfer rumour mill.

When questioned about the ongoing speculation surrounding the 27-year-old's future, Dyche provided a concise response to the Liverpool Echo, stating,

    "It's noise at the moment."

The situation at Everton has been somewhat compelled by Iwobi's reluctance to ink a fresh contract at Goodison Park.

Consequently, the Arsenal academy product is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, a scenario Everton is keen to avoid, especially given their initial £35 million investment in him back in 2019.

While Dyche would prefer to retain Iwobi in his squad, Everton's willingness to offload him to Fulham for £20 million is a pragmatic stance.

What might irk Everton supporters is the timing of these discussions, which have stretched to the eve of the transfer deadline, leaving Everton with scant time to secure a replacement.

Iwobi was a fixture in Everton's starting lineup last season, featuring in all 38 Premier League matches.

Although he may not have fully lived up to his hefty price tag at Goodison Park, he earned the Players' Player of the Season accolade last term. Should he indeed leave, his departure would create a notable void.

As Everton grapple with both defensive and attacking issues, despite the arrival of Beto, Dyche now faces an additional challenge in the midfield department.

The impending departure of Iwobi, if it materializes, will undoubtedly compound the club's concerns.

Fulham Yet To Receive Bid For Player Despite Speculation
Fulham are still waiting to see the first official bid from Bayern Munich for Portugal midfielder Joao Palhinha, according to the Evening Standard.

The Cottagers rebuffed offers from West Ham earlier in the window and managed to keep the midfielder at the club.

However, Fulham are now facing the real threat of losing Palhinha with just a little over a day left in the ongoing transfer window.

Bayern Munich are set to make a move to snare Palhinha away from the west London club just hours before the end of the transfer window on Friday night.

Fulham are preparing to face an onslaught from the German champions but the official bid is yet to arrive.

It has been claimed that the Cottagers are yet to receive an offer from the Bundesliga giants.

Thomas Tuchel wants a defensive midfielder and Bayern Munich have identified Palhinha as the target.

The Portugal midfielder is also keen on the move and is prepared to leave Fulham in the dying days of the transfer window.

However, for the moment, Fulham do not have a bid on their table that they could accept or reject from the German giants.

Fulham Discussing Deal Structure With Everton For Midfielder
Fulham are discussing the structure and the fee of a deal with Everton for the signature of midfielder Alex Iwobi, according to Sky Sports News.

The former Arsenal star is in the final year of his contract at Fulham and is not keen on signing a new contract.

Fulham are amongst the clubs who are interested in getting their hands on the player ahead of Friday's transfer deadline.

The west London club are pressing ahead with their efforts to take the midfielder to Craven Cottage in the coming hours.

Fulham are now claimed to be in advanced negotiations with Everton for the signature of the Nigerian midfielder.

The two clubs are currently holding talks over the structure of the deal and the final transfer fee.

Marco Silva likes the player and is pushing Fulham to get a deal over the line for his signature before Friday's transfer deadline.

Iwobi is also keen on the move to Craven Cottage and personal terms are unlikely to be a problem once an agreement is in place between the two clubs.

Everton reluctant to sell at £14m loss but exit is still edging closer
Everton could reluctantly accept a bid of £20 million for Alex Iwobi as Premier League rivals Fulham close in on the former Arsenal man before this week's transfer deadline.

Eyebrows may have been raised by reports suggesting that Fulham have headhunted a player who has largely underwhelmed since joining Everton for a fee of up to £34 million in the summer of 2019.

But, then again, Marco Silva's side have made a bit of a name for themselves when it comes to kick-starting the careers of players in need of a fresh start in the Premier League. Bernd Leno and Andreas Pereira have arguably played the best football of their career at Craven Cottage. Willian, meanwhile, rolled back the years during a dazzling campaign in 2022/23.

At a reported £20 million, however, Alex Iwobi will still find himself under pressure to live up to a hefty price-tag. A feeling he knows well. The Daily Mail report that Fulham are now 'close' to agreeing a deal with Everton after talks on Wednesday night.

Fulham in talks to sign Alex Iwobi from Everton
The Toffees are reportedly 'reluctant' to lose the Nigeria international. But with just one year left on his contract, a £20 million offer feels too good to resist. What's more, with Jack Harrison and Arnaut Danjuma through the door already, Everton look well-placed to adapt to life without a player who has been utilised more often than not as a wide player under Dyche.

It remains to be seen what sort of a role Silva envisages for Iwobi at Fulham. He will be the second highly-versatile player to join the Cottagers this week, after the two-footed former Leicester City full-back Timothy Castagne. Fulham are also in talks to bring in Sevilla forward Lucas Ocampos.

Brazilian defender Juninho Capixaba is on the radar too.

Iwobi, meanwhile, was not in the Everton squad for Wednesday's 2-1 EFL Cup win at Doncaster Rovers. Though Dyche would not confirm at full-time whether Iwobi was merely rested. Or instead left out as his negotiations enter the final stages.

Silva, interestingly, was the Everton manager when Iwobi joined from Arsenal. A West London move will see him reunite with a coach who called him a 'fantastic signing' at the time.

QPR keen on Kongolo
Queens Park Rangers are keen on signing Fulham forgotten man Terence Kongolo as they look to shore up their leaky Championship defence, according to the Athletic's Peter Rutzler.

The Dutch international, who has made four appearances in four years at Fulham, spent the second half of last season on loan at French club Le Havre, making fifteen appearances. The former Huddersfield man is into the last twelve months of his Craven Cottage contract and hasn't played a first-team game since Marco Silva succeeded Scott Parker.

Austria Vienna are interested in loaning the 29 year-old as cover, but Kongolo is believed to be keen to remain in London and wants regular first-team football. His ability to play at left back or centre half is an attraction to Rangers boss Gareth Ainsworth, whose side have lost four of their five games this season, and failed to keep a clean sheet.

Fulham in Iwobi talks with Everton
Fulham are reportedly in advanced discussions with Everton over a possible deal for Alex Iwobi, according to various reports this morning.

The Nigerian international, an ever-present in the Toffees' successful battle against the drop which went to the final day last term, was signed by Marco Silva when the Fulham head coach was in charge at Goodison Park. The former Arsenal trainee is in the final year of his contract and could be available as Sean Dyche desperately seeks funds to reshape his first-team squad before the transfer deadline.

Iwobi has rejected offers of a new contract with Everton and is keen to be reunited with Silva at Craven Cottage. The talks between the two clubs are focused on agreeing a fee, with the potential for appearance and team-related add-ons, with the Londoners confident of matching the versatile 27 year-old's wage demands.

West Ham legend Tony Gale recounts memories of George Best and Bobby Moore

Pundit and commentator Tony Gale enjoyed a playing career spanning 21 years that saw him play more than 720 games for Fulham, West Ham and Blackburn Rovers among others

Former West Ham and Fulham defender turned pundit Tony Gale (Image: Christopher Lee/Getty Images)

West Ham and Fulham legend Tony Gale launches his autobiography That's Entertainment at Waterstones Lakeside tomorrow, Friday 1st September, with a book signing session for fans.

In a footballing career spanning 21 years, Gale played more than 720 games on almost every league pitch across the four divisions of English football. As a pundit he has commentated on over 3,000 live games, covering virtually every major football competition in his inimitable light hearted manner.

Gale made his first team debut at Fulham at the ripe age of 16, before being made captain of the Cottagers at 18. Playing alongside a golden era of greats, the anecdotes which Gale recounts while playing alongside George Best, Bobby Moore and Rodney Marsh are a nostalgic masterclass.

After 277 league appearances with the west Londoners, Gale moved to the east side of the capital to join West Ham in 1984 for a transfer fee of £200,000.

He stayed with the Hammers for the next decade, where the Pimlico-born defender was part of the iconic 'Boys of 86' squad, which broke 17 records that year, 16 of which are still unbeaten.

After leaving West Ham in 1994, Gale pitched up at Blackburn Rovers to work with Kenny Dalglish. He made 15 appearances across the season as Blackburn won the Premier League title, giving Gale the only major honour of his career at the age of 35.

Galey's book will be serialised next week on football.london, but if you want to meet one of the game's most memorable characters then head to Lakeside Waterstones at 1pm on Friday.

Fulham in advanced talks to sign Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi
Fulham are accelerating their efforts to sign Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi, with Joao Palhinha attracting interest from Bayern Munich.

Sky Sports correspondent Dharmesh Sheth reports that the Cottagers are in advanced talks with their Premier League counterparts over a permanent deal.

Iwobi has just 12 months left on his agreement with Everton and reportedly has no plans to extend his stay at Goodison Park any further.

His reluctance to pledge his allegiance to the Toffees has weakened their negotiating position, and Fulham look primed to finalise a deal for the Nigerian midfielder before tomorrow's deadline.

Fulham and Everton are locked in negotiations, with the subject of the conversation centring around the finances and structure of a fee required to finalise a deal.

Iwobi is reportedly enthusiastic about embarking on a new chapter in his career and will welcome a chance to join the Cottagers.

Although there is yet to be an understanding on personal terms between Fulham and the Nigerian international, it is believed an agreement will not be a concern with the player keen on the move.

Iwobi's imminent departure from Merseyside will come as a huge blow to Everton, as his creativity played a key role in their relegation battle last season.

The 27-year-old was not the goalscoring machine the Toffees needed, but he was an important figure in the squad, and his two goals and eight assists spurred Sean Dyche's side to survival.

A move to Fulham will see the Nigerian return to London for the first time since departing his boyhood club, Arsenal, in the summer of 2019.

Meanwhile, Iwobi could be replacing Palhinha in Marco Silva's squad, with the Cottagers braced for a mega bid from German champions Bayern.

The Bundesliga heavyweights have set their sights on the Portuguese holding midfielder, and Fulham may be powerless to stop their midfield enforcer from securing a late departure.

Although there is no official bid from Bayern, Palhinha has emerged as a priority for Thomas Tuchel and could be lining up for the Bavarians when the transfer window closes.

Wales Under-21: Fulham's Luke Harris and Cardiff City's Joel Colwill receive first call-ups

Luke Harris has made six first-team appearances for Fulham

Fulham forward Luke Harris and Cardiff City midfielder Joel Colwill have received first Wales Under-21 call-ups.

Colwill, 18, joins brother and club-mate Rubin, 21, in Matty Jones' squad.

Harris, 18, has been part of a number of senior Wales squads, though he is yet to be capped at that level.

Jones' side face Liechtenstein in a friendly on Friday, 8 September before playing their second 2025 Under-21 European Championship qualifier against Lithuania four days later.

Wycombe defender Joe Low returns to the under-21s set-up having been part of Rob Page's last senior squad, while Leyton Orient's on-loan Brighton defender Ed Turns is back after injury.

Goalkeeper Ed Beach, who was on the Chelsea bench for their Premier League win over Luton Town last week, and Reading's Charlie Savage are among the other players included by Jones.

Wales will aim to build on an encouraging 2-2 draw with Denmark in their opening qualifying game in June, when Rubin Colwill scored twice.

They face Liechtenstein at Newport's Rodney Parade before travelling to Lithuania.

Wales Under-21s: Beach, Hollingshead, Hughes, Turns, Low, Baker, Hoole, Ashworth, Beck, Stevens, King, Cotterill, Savage, Leeson, Hammond, Crew, J Colwill, R Colwill, Raymond, Harris, Congreve, Jones, Thomas.

Fulham set for QPR transfer decision
QPR are eyeing a move for Fulham defender

QPR is interested in signing Terence Kongolo from Fulham, but they face competition from Rapid Wien, making the negotiation complex.
Kongolo has fallen out of favor with Marco Silva at Fulham and is looking for regular playing time elsewhere.
QPR needs to strengthen their defense due to injury issues, and Kongolo's experience in English football could make him a valuable addition to the squad.

QPR are showing late transfer interest in signing Fulham's Terence Kongolo – giving their West London rivals a decision to make

According to The Athletic, the R's are keen on the 29-year-old but face competition from Austrian outfit Rapid Wien, meaning any deal will not be a straightforward negotiation.

Kongolo has fallen down the pecking order under Marco Silva, failing to feature for the Cottagers at all so far this season.

The defender could seek a move away from Craven Cottage in order to get regular playing time elsewhere.

What do QPR need to sign for the end of the transfer window?
QPR are looking light in defence, in particular with injury issues causing players to compete out of position.

Signing another centre-back would be a smart move for Gareth Ainsworth's side.

Kongolo has plenty of experience in English football, having been with Fulham since the summer of 2019.

He has also played for Huddersfield Town, joining the club in a big-money move from Monaco during the Terriers' time in the top flight.

The defender spent last season out on loan with French side Le Havre, where he made 14 appearances in Ligue 2.

He helped Le Havre gain promotion to the top flight as the team won the second division title.

It has been a difficult few years for Kongolo, with game time at Fulham becoming very hard to come by throughout his time in London.

However, a move to QPR is far from a foregone conclusion, with the team facing competition from abroad.

How has the start to the season been for QPR?
Many had tipped Ainsworth's side for relegation before the campaign got underway but despite their early season form, there have been signs of life.

QPR are currently 19th in the table having earned just three points from a possible 12 but have run the likes of Ipswich Town and Southampton close recently.

The Hoops have lost three of their opening four games in the league, conceding eight and only scoring three.

Their sole victory came against Cardiff City in Wales, with defeats coming against Watford, Ipswich and Southampton.

QPR have made a number of signings so far this summer as they look to improve on last year's difficult campaign.

Rangers finished 20th in the table, just six points clear of the bottom three.

The likes of Asmir Begovic, Morgan Fox and Jack Colback have arrived to bolster the team's options.

QPR have until 11pm on Friday night to complete any potential deal for Kongolo.

Next up for the London club is a trip to the Riverside to face Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Would Terence Kongolo be a good signing for QPR?
Kongolo would bring a much-needed extra body into the squad, so on that basis he would be a solid signing.

The defender has really struggled in recent years, so it is a slight risk to bring him in, but he did perform well in Ligue 2 last season, so perhaps that is a good sign that he can get back to his best.

QPR really lack defensive options so he will, at worst, provide cover in the event of further injuries.

But he could prove a smart signing if he can rediscover his best form.
