Chelsea 1-0 Fulham

Cole Palmer has scored five penalties this season, more than any other player in the Premier League

Cole Palmer's first-half penalty gave Chelsea a narrow win over West London rivals Fulham at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.

Palmer's reverse pass set up Raheem Sterling, who was caught by Issa Diop inside the penalty area.

Palmer dispatched the spot-kick, sending Fulham keeper Bernd Leno the wrong way to net his ninth goal since joining the Blues in August.

Conor Gallagher almost added a late second when his sweetly struck effort using the outside of his boot cannoned off the far post.

Chelsea kept Fulham at arm's length and held on for their third consecutive victory to jump to eighth in the table.

The visitors stay in 13th and have lost four of their past five matches.

Cool Palmer fires Chelsea to win
It was not a classic but Chelsea did enough to come away with three points.

Chelsea were wasteful in their 1-0 loss to Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg on Tuesday, and for much of the first half against Fulham they once again struggled in front of goal.

Gallagher fired a shot over the bar after 16 minutes and Armando Broja headed Enzo Fernandez's cross wide of the near post moments later.

It took the combined coolness of Sterling, who forced Diop into a tackle he did not need to make, and Palmer to break the deadlock.

After the restart Chelsea looked far more assured. Fernandez crossed for Sterling in the 50th minute, with the England forward flicking his header against a post, although any finish would have been ruled out for offside.

Victory meant Mauricio Pochettino's side won a fourth home league match on the bounce for the first time since July 2020.

After winning only 12 of their 43 league games in 2023 - the fewest they had recorded in a calendar year since 1995 - Chelsea's 2024 league campaign has got off to the perfect start.

They play Middlesbrough in the semi-final second leg on 23 January.

Fulham still stuttering on the road
Fulham's poor away run continued. The Cottagers have lost their past five league games on the road and were beaten 2-1 at Liverpool in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

Marco Silva's side had the best chance of the opening exchanges when Antonee Robinson's low cross found Harry Wilson at the back post, but the winger's effort from a tight angle was kept out by the feet of Chelsea keeper Djordje Petrovic.

In the 74th minute Petrovic superbly denied Fulham's Raul Jimenez with a low diving save to his right after the forward met Andreas Pereira's cutback.

The match's outcome may have been different if referee Anthony Taylor had chosen to send off Chelsea defender Malo Gusto with the game goalless in the 39th minute.

The France right-back caught Willian above his ankle, but the video assistant referee (VAR) was happy to uphold Taylor's decision to award Gusto a yellow card.

Fulham face Liverpool in the semi-final second leg on 24 January.

Post-Chelsea Press Conference
Frustration was the prominent emotion for Marco Silva on Saturday afternoon, after VAR declined to intervene on the key moment of our meeting with Chelsea.

With the score goalless, Malo Gusto caught Willian high on his ankle with his studs.

Referee Anthony Taylor duly booked the full-back, but the dangerous nature of the challenge meant it was somewhat surprising when there was no recommendation that Taylor go to the screen for a second look.

Addressing the incident in his press conference, Silva said: "A clear mistake from the VAR, in our opinion, given some conversation that we had with the fourth official, it's a clear red card in that situation.

"It's difficult for Anthony Taylor to decide, for him to see if it's a red card or not. He decided yellow card, and we have to be fair with him because the moment is really quick for him to see if it's so dangerous from Malo Gusto.

"But after has to come the decision from the VAR to overturn the decision, in my opinion.

"In the Premier League so far, in 10 moments like that one, nine have been a red card. This afternoon wasn't a red card.

"Okay, the decision is a clear mistake from the VAR to not overturn the decision, to give the chance for Anthony Taylor to go to the screen.

"Of course, if there's a red card in that moment after 38 minutes, that will have a huge impact in the game, and the game is going to be completely different."

Less than 10 minutes later, Chelsea scored the only goal of the afternoon from the penalty spot – a goal which arrived during one of Fulham's strongest spells of the game.

"Chelsea started better than us," Silva admitted. "The way we started the game was not at our best level.

"They started on the front foot, we had some difficulties to connect the first passes between us every time we were on the ball.

"The reaction was strong from Chelsea, but was much more our fault. We didn't connect well in something where normally we are strong in our offensive transition.

"It wasn't the best start for us, definitely the first 15-20 minutes. After that, I think the game started to be more balanced – some spells for Chelsea, others for us as well.

"We had good moments in our offensive half – very good chance for Harry Wilson to score as well, great save from the Chelsea goalkeeper.

"And, of course, after came the penalty in the last minute of the first half, and that gave them the chance to lead at half-time.

"Second half, the game was more broken. We took some risks and there was much more space for Chelsea to counter-attack in some moments to create some chances – they had two off the post. We had our moments as well, our chances.

"The game was much more open and they should have scored more. We had our chances to score as well to equalise the game. The second half was really intense, but not really well played by both sides."

Fulham facing increased competition for January target – Club in talks with agent over move
Fulham are facing competition for Atletico Madrid defender Çaglar Söyüncü, with Porto also in the mix for him.

That's according to A Bola, who say the 'track remains activated' to the Turkish defender despite him being approached in the last few hours by Fenerbahce.

The newspaper explains that the Turkish side's football director, Selahattin Baki, travelled to Madrid to try to find an agreement for Söyüncü, only to discover he's not keen on a return to his homeland as yet.

He's instead looking for a more competitive league and project after failing to settle at the Wanda Metropolitano and FC Porto, Fulham and Roma are all 'open possibilities' for him.

Of those three it appears to be Porto who are pushing the most, with A Bola explaining they are working out how to facilitate a loan deal for the defender and already making enquiries both with the player's agent and Atletico Madrid on that front.

Thus, Fulham may need to step up their efforts if they want to bring him back to the Premier League this month.

Several reports have already linked them with a move, with the last, yesterday, stating that Fulham are tempting him back to England.

Why Chelsea's Malo Gusto wasn't sent off against Fulham

Chelsea welcomed Fulham to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday
Gusto launched into a meaty tackle on ex-Blues star Willian
Anthony Taylor only gave Gusto a yellow card

It's safe to say that Anthony Taylor is not a popular figure among Chelsea's fanbase.

A petition launched last season demanding the Wythenshawe-born official be banned from refereeing any Chelsea match has accrued more than 160,000 signatures. However, Taylor may have softened some of the scorn seeping out of the blue half of west London with a controversial decision that benefitted Chelsea when Fulham travelled to Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime.

Blues full-back Malo Gusto launched into a meaty challenge on Willian in the first half of the Premier League contest, leaving the former Chelsea favourite writhing on the turf in agony.

Taylor only produced a yellow card, avoiding any more ire from Chelsea fans but prompting some raised eyebrows from other onlookers.

Why wasn't Chelsea's Malo Gusto sent off against Fulham?

Tom Cairney was quick to close Gusto down in the 38th minute. The 20-year-old wrestled his way past Fulham's skipper but Willian was diligently following up. In a desperate bid to retain possession, Gusto flung out his boot, grazing the ball with his studs before sinking them into Willian's shin.

Law 12 in the FA handbook lists "serious foul play" - which is described as "a tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality" - as a sending-off offence. A foul is worthy of just a yellow card if it is deemed "reckless" rather than "excessive".

As with many of the rules in this sport, red cards are often a subjective call. Taylor only had the benefit of one look in real time to make his decision but Michael Salisbury in the VAR booth inspected multiple replays.

TNT Sports presenter Lynsey Hipgrave, who is in dialogue with a production team that has access to the in-game deliberations made by the video assistant referees at Stockley Park, revealed: "VAR felt it was more of a reckless followthrough, more on the foot than the ankle." With that conclusion, a yellow card was the right call.

Reaction to Malo Gusto's challenge on Willian
Gusto had a challenge against Aston Villa controversially upgraded from a yellow card to a red after a VAR review back in September. Villa striker Ollie Watkins admitted that he was unsure if Gusto's tackle that day warranted such severe punishment but the general public seemed to all agree that the full-back was fortunate to stay on the pitch against Fulham.

Fulham manager Marco Silva has launched numerous stinging tirades against the Premier League's fleet of officials this season. No doubt the non-decision Gusto benefitted from will be another added to his list of gripes but Silva will not be the only one questioning Saturday's referee.

Chelsea 1-0 Fulham: Cole Palmer penalty settles west London derby
The Blues have now won three league games on the bounce for the first time since October 2022

Chelsea made it three Premier League wins in a row for the first time since October 2022 as Cole Palmer's penalty guided them to a 1-0 victory over Fulham at Stamford Bridge.

The winning goal came in stoppage time at the end of the first half, the top scorer for Mauricio Pochettino's side notching his ninth goal of the season after Raheem Sterling was tripped in the box.

However, the move had been started by a moment of Palmer genius, spotting a gap and threading a superb ball through the middle that drew defender Issa Diop into a clumsy foul.

Marco Silva's visitors never truly looked beaten until the final whistle sounded.

Chelsea, though, defended doggedly in the final moments to breath genuine momentum into their season.

The first half began in a familiar pattern, plenty of possession for the hosts but little or no penetration in the final third. Sterling was busy down the left during the opening 15 minutes, Kenny Tete at right-back barring the way.

The only chance of those opening exchanges fell to Conor Gallagher, the captain lifting his shot a couple of yards over the bar from just outside the box.

Sterling opted for a different tact on 20 minutes, laying it off wide to Enzo Fernandez to cross. His centre was met by Armando Broja at the front post, who failed to get enough of a glance on the ball and thumped his header wide.

The best chance of the half, though, was Fulham's. Willian fed Andreas Pereira overlapping on the left, who picked out Harry Wilson stealing away into space on the far side. Wilson hit it first time, looking to sneak it inside Djordje Petrovic's near post, but the goalkeeper spread himself well, rebounding it away with his legs.

Chelsea's goal in added time at the end of the half was not deserved on the balance of play, but the pass from Palmer to carve out the chance was sublime. Making eyes for a lofted cross, he instead slipped a reverse ball through the middle for Sterling, who in cutting in onto his left was tripped by Diop. Palmer did the rest from the spot.

Chelsea were seeking a fourth win from five in the league, the kind of points return they had not enjoyed since former boss Graham Potter's early days in charge more than a year ago. They were, in truth, fortunate to lead at the break.

Sterling headed against the post from six yards out at the start of the second half after Fernandez's cross had picked him out. Malo Gusto played a low ball for Broja at the near post, but he failed to get a touch and it was cleared by Tosin, as a rebooted Chelsea emerged after the break with renewed purpose.

Fulham took time to get going in the second half half but finally found some bite after 70 minutes, Raul Jimenez shooting low first-time at goal and drawing a save from Petrovic dropping to his right. Pochettino responded by sending on Ben Chilwell for his first appearance in nearly fourth months after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Gallagher struck the post with a superb curling effort off the outside of his right boot as Chelsea looked to kill the game off, then Willian just cleared the bar from a free-kick, Fulham refusing to lie down easy.

In the end, the clock ran out on them, as Chelsea's resurgence under Pochettino rolled on.

Fulham forced to swallow more unwelcome Chelsea medicine in 'most one-sided derby'
Chelsea 1-0 Fulham

Fulham were camped in their own third of the pitch from the word go, struggling to escape the constricting Chelsea press.

Marco Silva was soon flapping his arms in repeated frustration on the touchline as the ball kept being lost to their bitter rivals.

Even then, the outcome looked nailed-on. And so it proved. A first-half stoppage time penalty from Cole Palmer was all it took this time to preserve an all-too familiar narrative.

Welcome to the most one-sided derby in English football.

Even when the Blues have been average and the Whites pretty good, this west London derby seems to have gone this way.

Most clashes between neighbours end up with one team having a narrow margin of dominance - a ratio of say, 1.33 wins for Arsenal to every one for Spurs or 1.28 wins for Man United to every one win for Man City. Newcastle are only just in credit against Sunderland.

Only two of those clashes between local rivals has a ratio of two to one - West Ham v Millwall and Southampton v Portsmouth.

Then there is Chelsea v Fulham.

This fixture is way out on its own. Last season's wonderful moment for Carlos Vinicius which gave the Whites a famous 2-1 win at the Cottage was only the 10th win in 50 encounters in all competitions. Make that 10 in 51 now. As the Americans might say: You do the math.'

It is now nearly 45 years since Fulham last won at Stamford Bridge. October 1979's 2-0 win was so long ago, Margaret Thatcher had only just come to power. There have been 21 fruitless attempts since then.

It could be argued that Fulham's Carabao Cup semi-final in midweek at Anfield had been far more stressful and demanding than Chelsea's at Middlesbrough, because the Whites really did seem to find it difficult to locate the necessary intensity to get to grips with the Blues.

They seemed slower in thought and deed, with the hosts winning most of the duels and fifty-fifties. Tom Cairney was given no time on the ball and there was no outlet when they did have possession and wanted to get forward quickly.

Raul Jimenez did finally test keeper Djordje Petrovic in the second half when the Whites finally showed a little zest - they would have copped a fearful earful from Silva at the break. Ex-Blues man Willian blazed a free-kick just over.

There was a late flurry of sorts from Fulham as Chelsea suddenly remembered they were not great and began to panic a little. But the Whites did not do enough to get anything from the contest - as has all-too often been the way for them against the one team they would rather not be struggling against.

The hopes must surely be that if they can somehow overcome Liverpool in their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg, they don't end up meeting Chelsea in the final at Wembley. We can all guess how that one would probably end.

Palmer penalty edges Chelsea past Fulham
Chelsea 1 Fulham 0

Chelsea bounced back from a midweek Carabao Cup defeat at Middlesbrough with a hard-fought victory against Fulham at Stamford Bridge.

Cole Palmer's first-half penalty was the difference in a hard-fought derby that saw Chelsea also hit the post twice in the second half.

The Blues were on top in the opening 20 minutes and the first big chance fell to Armando Broja, who headed wide after Enzo Fernandez curled a cross into the six-yard box.

Harry Wilson then went close at the other end, drawing a solid save from Djordje Petrovic as he tried to convert Antonee Robinson's low cross at the back post.

Chelsea continued to dominate possession and found a breakthrough in first-half added time when Palmer converted from the penalty spot after Raheem Sterling was tripped by Issa Diop.

The 21-year-old sent Bernd Leno the wrong way, having played Sterling in with a defence-splitting pass in the build up.

Chelsea nearly doubled their lead after the break, as Sterling found himself free inside the box, but could only guide his header against the post.

Conor Gallagher then smashed a brilliant effort off the woodwork late on, catching the ball on the volley and curling it off the post with the outside of his boot.

Fulham showed flashes as they searched for an equaliser in the final 20 minutes, but Raul Jimenez failed to capitalise and saw a shot saved well by a diving Petrovic when Fernandez slipped inside the Chelsea box.

Willian then fired a free-kick over the bar in the 85th minute, but Chelsea held on for the win in a game where both Ben Chilwell and Carney Chukwuemeka made welcome returns from injury.

Palmer's spot kick downs rugged Fulham in dour derby at the Bridge
Chelsea 1 v Fulham 0

39,643

Cole Palmer is the player of the season for the Blues so far and he proved so again this afternoon as he scored the only goal, but also showed exceptional skill, vision and a massive work rate, that would put a defender to shame let alone a attacking midfielder,

The goal that downed plucky but unimaginative Fulham, was from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time, and the visitors can take a crumb of comfort from the fact that Chelsea really didn't create much else in the way of clinical finishing.

Palmer was the villain of the piece as he missed a hat-trick of chances in midweek in the Carabao Cup semi-final at Middlesbrough but he did not show any hangover from that trial as his class shone out across the Stamford Bridge pitch.

Chelsea leap to the dizzy heights to eighth while Fulham, while not in a relegation battle yet, must be thinking they need to get back on track – they stay 13th in the division.

Chelsea dominated the opening exchanges, gradually pushing the noisy neighbours from thee other end of the Fulham Road further back.

Whites boss Marco Silva gestured to his charges not to fall too deep and to compress the midfield, and that area became the battleground that both sides needed to take control of.

A left-footed Conor Gallagher was the first effort close to goal ether side came to on 16 minutes, but the Blues skipper hit his effort high over Bernd Leno and the crossbar.

A well-worked effort on the left on 21 minutes involving Raheem Sterling, Enzo and finally Armando Broja, saw the Albanian striker get a head on the ball, but he could not direct it on goal.

Gradually Fulham got a foothold in the game, retained possession better and even had then first shot on target – albeit a weak effort from Andreas Pereira which failed to trouble Djordje Petrovic.

A minute later he did much better parrying away an excellent shot from Harry Wilson, as Fulham sought to get at Chelsea by getting behind the defence and cutting back from the byline.

Right on the stroke of half-time, The Blues were given a penalty when Diop clipped the right boot of Sterling.

Up stepped Cole Palmer who with the last kick of the half, stroked the ball home, sending Leno the wrong way in the process.

There were no changes by either side at the break, but the Blues continued as they had in the first half, on the front foot.

Sterling had a glorious chance on 62 minutes to double the lead, when he beat the offside trap, but his glancing header from eight yards out nipped off Leno's left upright and was cleared to safety

Silva was first head coach to blink, bringing on Bobby De Cordova-Reid and Timothy Castagne for harry Wilson and and Kenny Tete on 64 minutes.

Pochettino responded by bringing on Noni Broja.

The changes galvanised Fulham more than Chelsea and Petrovic had to make a smart save to thwart Raul Jimenez on 74 minutes when his sliced kick saw Petrovic dive low to his right and tip the goal-bound effort away.

Ben Chilwell came on for Sterling on 76 minutes and he was instantly given the skipper's armband from Gallagher.

The substitutions continued, this time for the visitors with Rodrigo Muniz and Sasa Lukic coming on for Pereira and Palhinha on 82 minutes.

Gallagher was very unlucky to see his snatched, outside of his right-boot curler smack off Leno's right post one minute later.

Alfie Gilchrist got more Premier League minutes under his belt along with Carney Chukwuemeka who both came came on as the clock turn to 90 minutes – off went Palmer and Malo Gusto.

It got all very desperate as the five added minutes played out, both benches hoping against hope they would either prevent the other from scoring or in Fulham's case nick an equaliser.

Teams – Chelsea: Petrovic, Disasi, Silva, Sterling, Enzo, Broja, Palmer, Gallagher, Caicedo, Colwill, Gusto

Subs: Bettinelli, Bergstrom, Badiashile, Mudryk, Noni, Chukwuemeka, Chilwell, Deivid, Gilchrist

Fulham: Leno, Tete, Adarabioyo, Jimenez, Wilson, Cairney, Pereira, Willian, Palhinha, Diop, Robinson

Palmer makes Fulham pay the penalty
Fulham's long wait for a win at Stamford Bridge will stretch into a 45th year after Cole Palmer's penalty at the end of the first half secured a third successive league win for Mauricio Pochettino's men. Marco Silva's spirited side ultimately paid the price for Issa Diop's dozy decision to lunge in on Raheem Sterling, but there was as little between the SW6 neighbours as the scoreline suggested with the Whites coming up short only 72 hours after their League Cup semi-final first leg defeat at Liverpool.

The moment that settled the match was created by Palmer, Chelsea's classiest performer by a mile, who gave Sterling space inside the penalty area with an intelligent reverse ball. Diop dived it as Sterling checked inside and conceded a clear cut spot-kick, from which the former Manchester City midfielder sent Bernd Leno the wrong way. It was a rare error during another disciplined display from the Fulham back four, but it proved critical.

Referee Anthony Taylor's decisions were also critical. He opted to let a number of hefty tackles go unpunished early on and showed Malo Gusto only a yellow card after a wild challenge on Willian. VAR reached the same conclusion as the official, but plenty of players have been sent off for less this season. Midway through the second half, Thiago Silva, who had earlier escaped punishment when he lunged into Raul Jimenez's shins was also only booked when he took out the Mexican striker as he surged clear through the centre of the pitch. Chelsea's edginess was encapsulated by Palmer also being cautioned for booting the ball into the stands to prevent the Blues facing a quick free-kick.

Jimenez had two of Fulham's better chances as they went in search of an equaliser in the second half, testing Djordje Petrovic with a daisycutter after being teed up by Andreas Pereira, and then being denied by the Serbian at his near post barely a minute later. The former Wolves striker also curiously opted to try and chip the Chelsea goalkeeper from just over the halfway line when he had team-mates either side eager to lead a break before both Pereira and Willian went close with free-kicks.

Fulham were the dominant force during five minutes of stoppage time but they couldn't force home a late leveller from another set-play with Levi Colwill and Enzo Fernandes getting themselves in the way of efforts from Tosin Adarabioyo and Tom Cairney. It proved to be another frustrating journey along the Fulham Road for the Fulham faithful, although ironically Stamford Bridge was becoming audibly vocal about the home side's lack of invention when Diop conceded the fateful penalty.

Chelsea had a point to prove after their own League Cup semi-final reversal, although their defeat at Championship Middlesbrough on Tuesday was more of a surprise, and they dominated possession early on without creating a clear cut opportunity. The hosts looked more likely when they moved the ball with precision and pace in the final third. Connor Gallagher curled an early effort wide, but Armando Broja – whose only other league goal this campaign had come in the reverse fixture at Craven Cottage – spurned a glorious chance by heading wide from a fabulous Fernandez delivery.

Fulham could easily have opened the scoring themselves despite barely setting foot in the Chelsea box in the first twenty minutes. Pereira forced a smart save from Petrovic after Harry Wilson had pinched the ball high up the pitch, before the Welsh winger was denied by another reflex stop from the Chelsea keeper when he arrived at the back post to meet an inviting cross from Antonee Robinson.

Chelsea made a much more high-octane start to the second period seeking to press home the advantage they had earned from the spot. Sterling somehow glanced a header onto the post when it seemed easier to score from another Fernandez cross before the England winger was denied by an excellent intervention from Kenny Tete after Gusto had played another dangerous ball across the box.

Gallagher almost made it two with a swerving shot off the outside of his boot that cannoned off the base of the far post with Leno beaten, but Fulham asked far more of the questions once Silva, who kicked every ball on the touchline, had sent on Rodrigo Muniz to try and expose Chelsea's defence frailties. The Whites might not have grabbed a share of the derby day spoils, but there was plenty to like about this tenacious display.

Referee mocked by Specsavers after Chelsea's Malo Gusto somehow avoids red card
Chelsea's west London derby showdown with Fulham at Stamford Bridge was marred by a controversial decision from referee Anthony Taylor after Malo Gusto escaped a red card

The decision not to give Chelsea defender Malo Gusto a red card during the west London derby with Fulham prompted some teasing from none other than Specsavers.

The Blues welcomed neighbours Fulham to Stamford Bridge for Saturday's early kick-off and eventually held on to register a 1-0 victory. The only goal of the game came in the form of a Cole Palmer penalty in first-half stoppage time after Raheem Sterling was brought down by Issa Diop.

However, a debate surrounding whether Chelsea should have been reduced to 10 men while the scoreline was still 0-0 dominated the half-time discourse. Gusto was guilty of a brutal challenge on former Blues ace Willian, catching the Brazilian late and high on the ankle.

Willian was left writhing around on the turf in agony, while Gusto faced a nervy wait to see if he was going to receive his marching orders. However, following a brief VAR review, Anthony Taylor was told to stick with the on-field decision of a yellow card.

Those associated with Fulham were not exactly in agreement with that call and nor was the bulk of social media. Optician chain Specsavers tweeted 'check your dms, in response to a video of the incident, implying that Taylor may need his sight checked if he can't see the foul was worthy of a red.

Fulham boss Marco Silva has since addressed the incident and made clear that he feels Gusto should have been punished more severely. "It was a clear red card," claimed the Portuguese coach while speaking to TNT Sports at the end of the game.

Marco Silva felt Malo Gusto should have been dismissed for this tackle on Willian ( Image:
TNT Sports)

"We have to talk about the red card for Gusto, it was clear. It is hard to see how things aren't consistent at the level that we're at. This is the Premier League. In 10 of those moments, nine times it is a red card. it is a clear red card for me. VAR checked and this time they didn't give.

"I haven't spoken to the officials. I don't want to say what the fourth official said. He has the same opinion as me but it is not for him to say, it is for the VAR to decide. It is a normal decision from the referee but the help should come from the VAR."

Marco Silva laments decision not to show Malo Gusto a red card for tackle on Willian during Fulham's 1-0 defeat to Chelsea... and claims it is 'difficult to understand' the inconsistency in Premier League officiating

Malo Gusto escaped a red card despite his high tackle on the ankle of Willian
Chelsea went on to claim narrow win over their London rivals at Stamford Bridge

Marco Silva hit out at VAR Michael Salisbury's 'mistake' after Chelsea's Malo Gusto escaped a red card for a studs first challenge on Willian.

Defender Gusto was instead shown a yellow following the first-half flashpoint when the game was goalless, allowing Chelsea to keep 11 men on the field and go onto win narrowly.

Fulham boss Silva said: 'It was a mistake from VAR. It's a clear red card.

'It's difficult for [referee] Anthony Taylor to see if it's a red card or not. He decided it's a yellow and we have to be fair because in the moment it's really quick.

'But after that comes the decision from the VAR to overturn the decision. So far in the Premier League, in ten moments nine are red card and this afternoon wasn't.'

Anthony Taylor showed Chelsea defender Malo Gusto a yellow card after his tackle on Willian

Gusto was dismissed against Aston Villa earlier this season following a red card review and Mauricio Pochettino said he understood Silva's frustration.

'Sometimes it's for you, sometimes it's against. They gave a yellow card. Good for us,' Pochettino said.

The issue of consistency has been a topic of intense discussion this season as the likes of Curtis Jones and Yves Bissouma have received red cards for similar challenges earlier in the campaign.

Marcus Rashford was also given his marching orders after he planted his foot on an opponent, though that incident took place during a Champions League tie against FC Copenhagen.

Silva's side stayed in a tight game against the Blues and set up a grandstand finish with a flurry of chances in the dying minutes of the tie. But they ultimately left the home of their rivals with the familiar feeling of defeat.

'Second half we had some chances, Chelsea had chances, the game was more open,' the Portuguese boss added. 'The players gave everything. The support was impressive away from home.

'For the fourth official I have spoken. It was for the VAR, the opinion of the official, the referee decided for a yellow card.

Cole Palmer's penalty winner which Chelsea clung on to came at the end of an underwhelming first-half and Pochettino said cryptically: 'The first half wasn't the first half that we planned.

'Difficult to understand'... Marco Silva suggests the referee made a big mistake during Fulham vs Chelsea
Fulham lost to Chelsea in frustrating fashion on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues felt like they were there to be gotten at during the SW6 derby, but as much as Fulham huffed and puffed, they couldn't breach the Chelsea defence.

Fulham worked very hard during this game, but it was to no avail.

The game was ultimately decided by a penalty, but there was a refereeing decision during the game that was even more controversial than the call to give the spot kick.

Indeed, Malo Gusto made a studs-up challenge on Willian in the first-half, and got away with just a yellow card.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game (13/1/24 2:55PM), Marco Silva has shared his verdict on this call and he's suggested in no uncertain terms that Gusto should've been sent off.

Gusto should've gone
Silva shared his verdict on the controversial call.

"We have to talk about the red card, it's a red card. Clear for Gusto. It's difficult to understand that things can't be consistent at the level we all are. The Premier League is the Premier League and in 10 moments like that nine so far has been a red card, but this afternoon it wasn't a red card. It was a clear dangerous tackle putting the player in trouble in the situation, for me it's a clear red card, the VAR checked and for this time they didn't give it,' Silva said.

Seen them given
We can absolutely understand where Silva is coming from here.

Now, we're not saying that Gusto's challenge came with any intent or that he was trying to hurt Willian, but his studs were up and we have seen those types of challenges given time and time again this season.

Red cards such as Curtis Jones' against Tottenham earlier this season were given despite being much softer than Gusto's challenge against Fulham, so we can understand this gripe.

Consistency is all we ask for from our referees, but, sadly, we can't even get that at the moment.

Fulham "tempting" Caglar Soyuncu for January move

Fulham are reportedly interested in signing 27-year-old Turkish defender Caglar Soyuncu from La Liga club Atletico Madrid.
Caglar Soyuncu has been linked with the return to the Premier League, and Fulham are hoping to get a deal done before the January window closes. They will need to improve defensively if they want to finish in the top half this season. A report by AS has claimed that they are "tempting" the 27-year-old regarding a winter move.

The Caglar Soyuncu Story
Soyuncu has played in the Premier League before with Leicester City, and he could prove to be a quality acquisition. The Turkish international has struggled for regular game time at Atletico Madrid, and a move away would be ideal for him. He needs to play more often at this stage of his career, and returning to the Premier League would be an attractive proposition for him.

He knows the Premier League well and should be able to settle in quickly and make an immediate impact. Fulham are a competitive club with an impressive squad. The opportunity to play for them regularly could be hard to turn down for the 27-year-old central defender.

Given his standing in the Atletico Madrid squad, he could be available for a reasonable outlay as well. Fulham must prioritise signing a central defender before the window closes. They have already conceded 35 goals in 20 league matches and are 13th in the league table with a negative goal difference.

Fulham Need a Centre-Back
It is one area that is in need of major improvement, and it will be interesting to see if Marco Silva can sign the necessary players this month. Although a move from Atletico Madrid to Fulham would be a major step down, the 27-year-old Turkish defender does not have a choice, and it would certainly be better than sitting on the bench at a big club.

It remains to be seen whether the two clubs can negotiate a transfer before the January window closes. Fulham could easily secure a top-half finish if they manage to finish the season strongly, and the right additions in January could help them turn things around and climb up the table quickly quickly. They have looked quite impressive going forward but need to get rid of their defensive frailties now.

Under 18s see off Saints in five-goal thriller
Lemar Gordon, Farhaan Ali-Wahid and Bradley de Jesus grabbed the goals as Fulham's under 18s came out on top against Southampton in a five-goal thriller at Motspur Park this morning.

Ali Melloul handed new signing Marco Underwood a first start in goal after he his successful trial and the youngster had a busy afternoon during an end-to-end encounter that was action-packed from the first whistle. Fulham created the first opening after three minutes when Jayden Quashie burst through the centre of the park and spread the play out to Tom Olyott. The winger found Callum Osmand but the Welsh forward's header was smartly saved by Dylan Moody.

Southampton skipper Tommy Dobson might have done better than direct a free header from a free-kick off target before Osmand went close with a half-volley before being denied by a superb reaction stop from Moody. The visitors made the most of their goalkeeper's excellent saves by taking the lead midway through the first half when Princewill Ehibhationham found Josh Pitts inside the Fulham box and the striker wrongfooted the home defence before powering a precise shot in the bottom corner.

Lively winger Ehibhatiomhan spurned a good chance to make it two ten minutes before the interval when he fired wide at the conclusion of a dangerous Saints break. The visitors paid the penalty for that with Gordon going straight up the other end and drawing Fulham level. The Ealing born-winger cut in from the left flank onto his right foot and found the far corner with an impressive finish, but the hosts were indebted to an excellent save from Underwood – who got down well at his near post to deal with another Ehibhatiomhan effort – that ensured it was all square at half-time.

Underwood excelled himself again at the start of the second half, reacting quickly to prevent Pitts from re-establishing Southampton's lead, before Sam Amissah – fresh from scoring a fabulous winner for the under 21s last night made a brilliant block from the rebound. Farhaan Ali-Wahid passed up the chance to fire Fulham ahead for the first time when he skied over after intercepting a risky pass out from the back by goalkeeper Moody.

Ali-Wahid didn't let his head drop and got his reward barely a minute later. There was a touch of fortune about his goal as his cross travelled through a forest of arms and legs before sneaking into the far corner beyond the unfortunate Moody, but Fulham were now beginning to create the chances their enterprising approach play merited. Nwoko set up Osmand to make it 3-1 when he stole the ball from a Southampton defender, but Moody was more than a match for the in-form centre forward once again.

The third goal arrived shortly after the hour through a moment of magic from de Jesus. The full back showed the finishing ability that made him a promising forward player when he first came to the academy by lashing home a long-range half volley to put some clear water between the sides. Fulham needed it, too, as Osmand passed up another opportunity to score following unselfish work from Ali-Wahid, and were hanging on when Max Fry headed in Aston Daley's cross at the near post to set up a grandstand finale.

Southampton could easily have completed a stoppage-time fightback when Underwood's clearing kick was charged down and rolled towards the unguarded net only for substitute Samuel Tabares to clear off the line when it looked for all the world as though Harry Gathercole was set to equalise.

FULHAM UNDER 18s (4-4-2): Underwood; de Jesus, Slade (Tabares 63), Nsasi, Amissah; Nwoko, Quashie, Olyott, Gordon; Ali-Wahid (Bogle-Campbell 86), Osmand. Subs (not used): Wingate, White, Park.

GOALS: Gordon (36), Ali-Wahid (49), de Jesus (63).

SOUTHAMPTON UNDER 18s (4-3-3): Moody; Onkola-Matthews (Myers 76), Dobson-Ventura, Fry, Sesay; Andrews, Rohart-Brown (Onyekunle 64), Daley; Merry, Ehibhationham (Martin 76), Pitts (Gathercole 76). Subs (not used): Upstell.

BOOKED: Andrews.

GOALS: Pitts (22), Fry (90+6).

REFEREE: Stuart Smith.

Silva slams 'mistake by VAR'
Marco Silva bemoaned a 'mistake' from the video assistant referee after Malo Gusto got away with only a yellow card following a wild challenge on Willian during Chelsea's 1-0 win in the SW6 derby this lunchtime.

The Fulham boss was furious that the young defender was only shown a yellow card for his studs-up lunge on the former Chelsea winger, describing it as an obvious error during his post-match press conference following the Whites' narrow defeat.

Silva said:

"We have to talk about the red card, it has to be a red card for Gusto, it's difficult to understand how things aren't consistent. For me it's a clear red card. It is a mistake from VAR. In my opinion, our opinion, even conversations with the fourth official, it is a red card. We have to be fair with the referee, the moment is really quick. So far in the Premier League, nine out of ten times it is a red card. This afternoon it wasn't. It's a mistake from the VAR."

The Portuguese head coach was pleased with Fulham's persistence – if not the end result:

"We didn't start at our best. We had problems to connect our first passes. The reaction was strong by Chelsea but it was more our fault. The first fifteen to twenty minutes wasn't the best. After we balanced the game. We had moments in the attacking half, a good chance for Wilson. Then it is the penalty. The second half was more broken. We took more risks. We had our moments. Probably we should have been more clinical.

Second half we had some chances, Chelsea had chances, the game was more open. The players gave everything. The support was impressive away from home. It's a difficult one to take, it's a disappointing result for us, we want to fight for something different. We did really well in some moments. Some decisions made it complicated.

Fulham boss Marco Silva slams officials for missing 'clear red card' in Chelsea defeat
Fulham boss Marco Silva has slammed VAR for not recommending a red card for Malo Gusto's challenge on Willian in Chelsea's 1-0 win over their west London neighbours on Saturday.

The Blues bounced back from their midweek, Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg defeat to Middlesbrough by seeing off the Cottagers thanks to Cole Palmer's spot-kick in first-half injury time after Raheem Sterling had been brought down inside the box.

But there was a moment of controversy shortly before that when Gusto caught Willian on his ankle with a straight leg, though the VAR, Michael Salisbury, did not send referee Anthony Taylor to the pitchside monitor.

Silva was at a loss to explain how the French full-back stayed on the pitch, slamming VAR for not recommending a review, and says fourth official Simon Hooper was in agreement that it should have been upgraded to a red.

Asked for his thoughts on the match, Silva told TNT Sports: 'Apart from the first 15-20 minutes I think we started to create some problems, very good chance to open the score, good save from the goalkeeper.

'And unfortunately after that comes the penalty that gave them the chance to be leading at half-time. Before that, of course, we have to talk about the red card that has to be a red card, it's clear for Gusto.

'It's difficult to understand how things aren't consistent at the level we all are, the Premier League is the Premier League.

'Probably in 10 moments like that, nine so far have been a red card. This afternoon it wasn't a red card and they really missed a clear, dangerous tackle that put the player in trouble in that situation.

'For me, it's a clear red card. VAR checked and this time they did not give.

'Second half we tried to react, some chances for Chelsea too. We had our chances as well. Of course the game was more open, more space for them to explore the pace and the quality of the attacking players, but even so we fought until the end.'

Asked if he had been given any explanation as to why Gusto's challenge was not deemed a red, Silva replied: 'Just from the fourth official, we have spoken.

'Of course, I don't want to say what he said to me but he has the same opinion as myself. But it's not for him, it's for the VAR.

'That moment is a clear VAR decision. It doesn't matter the opinion of the fourth official or the other people that saw the images at half-time, it is a moment for the VAR to decide.

'Of course, Antony Taylor in that moment decided only a yellow card. It's a normal decision from the referee, but I really believe the help should come from the VAR.

'And again, in 10 moments so far this season this type of tackle would result in a red card nine times. This afternoon it wasn't.'

Fulham U21 2-1 Derby U21
Fulham Under-21s scored two dramatic late goals to beat Derby County 2-1 on Friday night in the PL2.

Despite being behind with 93 minutes on the clock, up stepped substitutes Callum McFarlane and Samuel Amissah to fire us ahead.

The side were boosted by the return of Ollie O'Neill and Adrion Pajaziti, who started on the left wing and in the center of midfield respectively.

With Devan Tanton still away with Colombia, Chris Donnell started at right-back with fellow midfielder George Okkas holding onto his place at left-back after a solid performance earlier in the week against Benfica.

After a fairly even start, it was the visitors who created the first real opportunity of the game. Alfie McNally did excellently to block Darren Robinson's back post header, before rushing off his line to save the rebound too.

We chained together a decent move of our own on 17 minutes, with Josh King and Donnell linking up nicely down the right before the latter fired in a dangerous cross. A Derby defender did well to stick a leg in the way.

O'Neill was presented with our best opportunity, when his close-range header kissed the post before bobbling wide. Credit to Imani Lanquedoc whose cross from the right was inch-perfect.

Lanquedoc was causing problems and threatened a few minutes later, when his low effort from range whizzed just wide of the near post.

Šekularac was next to find himself on the end of a chance for the young Whites. Aaron Loupalo-Bi did well to steal the ball in a dangerous position before finding the Swiss, who curled an attempt wide.

The young Rams continued to threaten though, with striker Dajaune Brown powering down the left before rifling a low cross into the danger area. Donnell and Idris Odutayo did well to clear the ball together as it approached the goal line.

King was causing Derby some major problems and helped create another chance for us with just over five minutes of the first half remaining. After shuffling past a man in blue, he slid Loupalo-Bi through on goal but his powerful hit was brilliantly saved by Jack Thompson.

The away side created one more chance before the half's end, when winger Tony Weston rushed down the right before sliding a decent effort just past the far post.

Following a fiery opening 45 minutes, the two sides went in at the break goalless.

Derby's Brown had the first effort on goal after the interval, with his looping header floating just over and onto the top of the net.

The lads had Alfie McNally to thank a few minutes later. Our stopper did brilliantly to rush out, make himself big and block Weston's stinging effort from close-range. A huge chance for the visitors.

We reacted well though, with O'Neill cleverly finding King up the other end. The youngster's attempt was just wide of the target.

Just as we began to take control, the visitors struck to go ahead. Brown made a darting near post run to flick Weston's pacey cross past McNally.

The woodwork came to our rescue soon after, when Rams captain Robinson flew through midfield before rifling a low strike against the post. A real let-off for our lads.

Hayden Mullins opted for a couple of changes, with Terrell Works and Callum McFarlane stepping in with 15 to play. The latter featuring for the first time in months having recovered from an injury.

McFarlane soon found an opening, heading over after latching onto a creative Pajaziti ball over the top. Derby's stopper did well a few minutes later to get down and block Donnell's effort after some clever build-up play.

We pushed and pushed and got ourselves level in the dying moments, courtesy of McFarlane. It all started with Jonathan Esenga, whose brilliant cross was headed back across goal by Works before being prodded home by the forward.

Then, in truly unbelievable fashion, substitute and centre back Samuel Amissah grabbed us the winner just a couple of minutes later. What a goal it was too, with the youngster volleying home from the tighest of angles.

Fulham U21: McNally, Donnell, Odutayo, Esenga, Okkas, Pajaziti (Amissah 87'), King (Avenall 83'), Lanquedoc (Works 74'), Sekularac (McFarlane 74'), O'Neill, Loupalo-Bi

Subs: Varney, Avenall, Amissah, Works, McFarlane

Derby County U21: Thompson, Oduroh, Bartley, Robinson, Moloney, Robinson, Fapetu, Weston (Richards 67'), Wheeldon (Hawkins 95'), Gibson-Hammond, Brown

Subs: Hawkins, Shattell, Richards, Moore, Jeffcott

Chelsea given clear Malo Gusto red card verdict amid VAR claim after Fulham win
Latest Chelsea news with Fulham manager Marco Silva making his thoughts perfectly clear over whether Malo Gusto should have been shown a red card

Fulham boss Marco Silva has admitted he thinks Malo Gusto should've been sent off for a strong challenge on Willian in the Premier League clash against Chelsea. The Blues entered the London derby in search of a fourth consecutive league victory at Stamford Bridge with the chance to move up to eighth up for grabs.

Mauricio Pochettino was looking for a response from his players following the Carabao Cup first-leg defeat to Middlesbrough with three points certainly the answer he wanted. The performance from his players, however, was far from convincing and it could have been far worse had Gusto been given his marching orders in the first half.

Just beyond the half-hour mark, the France international found himself far up the pitch and after losing possession attempted to win the ball back with a desperate lunge. However, former Chelsea man Willian, beat him to it with Gusto's studs colliding with Willian's shin which saw Anthony Taylor produce a yellow card.

A quick VAR check was conducted but no further punishment was dished out with Palmer scoring the only goal of the game just over 10 minutes later. At the end of the game, Silva offered his thoughts on the incident with it appearing very clear from his perspective that Gusto should have been sent off.

"I think it's a red card for (Malo) Gusto," the Fulham boss told TNT Sport. "It's difficult to understand how things are not consistent at a level we are at. The Premier League is the Premier League and in 10 moments like that, nine so far have been a red card and this afternoon was not. It was a dangerous tackle and the player in trouble in that situation is a clear red card. The VAR checked and didn't give it."

At halftime, the challenge was also discussed between Peter Crouch and Joe Cole, with the latter appearing reluctant to pick a side. "For me, I have seen them given," he admitted on TNT Sport. "I have seen them go to the screen and give a red card. He did the same against Aston Villa earlier on in the season and it can be perceived as reckless. I am glad he didn't get sent off but he could have done for that."

WATCH: Malo Gusto handed yellow for horror challenge on Willian – labelled 'clear red' by Marco Silva

Chelsea beat Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon – but many feel they were lucky to have 11 men on the pitch

Willian won't have enjoyed his visit back to Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, having to suffer a 1-0 loss against his former side Chelsea and endure a horror challenge from Malo Gusto – which the defender wasn't sent off for.

Chelsea beat neighbours Fulham 1-0 thanks to a Cole Palmer penalty on the stroke of half-time, a goal which sustains the Englishman's 100% spot kick record this season. The win moves Mauricio Pochettino's side to 10th in the table and secures three consecutive league wins for the first time since October 2022.

But the Blues' victory has been overshadowed by referee Anthony Taylor's decision to only book Gusto for a reckless challenge in the 38th minute.

The 20-year-old lost possession and in attempting to win the ball back stamped down on Willian's leg, studs up and well above the ankle. Taylor booked him and he went on to play until the 93rd minute, when he was substituted off for Alfie Gilchrist.

After the game, Cottagers manager Marco Silva said: "That has to be a red card for Gusto. It's difficult to understand how things are not consistent at the level we are. The Premier League is the Premier League. Probably in 10 moments like that, nine is a red card. This afternoon wasn't, but it was a dangerous tackle. For me it's a clear red card."

Pochettino came close to agreeing, saying: "I understand and respect his opinion. I think it was a difficult challenge for the referee and the VAR – I don't know if they checked or not – but we [Chelsea] already suffered some sendings off, red cards, for actions like this.

"I'm not going to say anything, I understand maybe it was a red card but I cannot say too much because I haven't see all the angles yet. That is football, sometimes it's for you and sometimes against you."

With VAR on-hand to review what seemed like a blatant sending off, fans have since drawn comparisons to fouls made by Yves Bissouma and Curtis Jones which both saw red for.

VAR also came under fire on Friday night's game between Luton Town and Burnley, with Clarets 'keeper James Trafford seemingly fouled in the build-up to Carlton Morris' dying-seconds equaliser.

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany called the decision "ridiculous," adding: "I don't get it anymore."
