Caedal

We desperately need a defensive midfielder, more than a centre back. I'm sure there is negotiations going on in the background, but it's frustrating that we don't have a replacement for Palhinha when we knew he was leaving months ago

Why not ,have a look Fulham.

Who says we're not🙄

Fulham Mike

May be in the minority here but I really don't think we should get Andersen back... especially for that amount of money.

I think a player like Rabiot wouldn't consider us, is used to playing for Champion's League teams and is regularly in France squads.

Quote from: Craven Mad on August 12, 2024, 09:03:25 PMCan someone correct me if I'm wrong, but because Liverpool added another sell-on clause in the sale to Brentford, we get:

- around £5m from the original transfer to Liverpool,

- around another £5m now from the transfer to Brentford AND

- 20% of 17.5% profit if/when Brentford sell Carvalho in the future, right?

If so, not a totally terrible outcome for us in the end...

As for Brentford, I think they've overpaid but they may have a good player or they may have a stinker... Carvalho worked well in a Marco Silva system and has worked less well under other managers' systems... Thomas Frank doesn't seem to play a system that'd be ideal for Fab (because he doesn't use a CAM) but there's no doubt that he was amazing in that one season for us.

Personally, for us now, I'd rather Iwobi at LW and ESR at CAM, so I don't think we could offer Fabio the starting slot he needs at this stage of his career.
we are not entitled to anything form the Liverpool sell on clause, our sell on was what liverpool sold him for above what they paid £5 million.

So we got the optional £5 million and are then due 20% on the difference between the fee they get in guaranteed money and the original fee, then 20% of the add ons when they are hit

Thanks. Is there anything you can point to as evidence for that being the case?

Only because I'd be somewhat surprised because selling clubs could effectively circumvent pre-existing sell-on clauses by selling the player to an associated third party for £0 plus a 100% sell-on.

Essentially, sell-on clauses are added as an alternative to an upfront fee, so have a monetary value that presumably should remain within the scope of any pre-existing rights over the player(?)

Similarly, I would expect that we'd also get 20% of the (reportedly) £7.5m add-ons, to the extent those clauses are ever triggered.

I'm not a sports lawyer, but it would be a pretty major 'miss' if these contracts don't operate in that way!
I am not a lawyer so do not have a contract as proof, but just what I have been told by those who have had some information on this. Also what is generally stated on Sky sports (for what that is worth these days).

It is part of the risk of selling someone that it works out and you mark some money over the original fee, i am always surprised (especially under FFP) that teams that need money do not say we want it all up front even if it means a little less overall. It would be never ending if you did do that team a sells with 20% sell on to team b, team b sells to team c who sell to team d and so on.

Like I say I am no an ITK on this or anything transfer wise just what I have picked up from a few mates who work work in the media and what Sky Sports have said in windows past.

@jolslover

Would be very happy with Andersen, think he would be great alongside Bassey. I think 25m is the max I would go though probably given his age

Interesting that we seem to be pushing for this over the cheaper Diego Carlos. No complaints here though,. Again, for me he was our best CBs since Hughes and Hangeland at the tine of his first outing here and was gutted we didnt stay up and keep him. Our defence wasnt the issue that year it was our complete ineptitude up front.

100% captain material, a leader, a fighter and a great person to pair with Bassey who has the pace and power to play alongside him and pair with his IQ and on the ball quality. Thats a very good offer imo if palace think they can spend that money elsewhere...if chalobah doesn't want to come here as some suggested perhaps they appeal to him more and they'll go for him instead.

Agree with that analysis but it's so blatantly low ball from us. He's worth 40m

Imagine the reaction from our fans if we were contemplating selling a player of his quality to palace for 25m

£25m with £5m in add ons is the roof of what I would offer for him. It's not a low ball, he's 28 years old. He would be an amazing signing for us and would easily give us a top 10 defence if not top 7.

If we bring in him and a couple of midfielders we have a real chance of achieving something special this season.

Craven Mad

Agree with you LC: there's a ceiling to how much we should offer, but Andersen definitely brings up our quality hugely.

He's also younger and/or less injury prone than some of our other RCB targets.

Up to 30m weve offered with addons and he is 28.
Weve had one bid, weve met them pretty much halfway given we bid 20 first and they supposedly "want" 40.(thats them high balling)

I think its a decent offer for his age and only 2years left on contract, so that could get accepted or may see us need to make one mini junp up more or for them to line up his replacement for similar or less money and it could be agreed

Quote from: Angus Telford on August 13, 2024, 04:59:10 PMAndersen I could get behind, the best of the CBs we've been linked with IMO.

28 isn't ideal but he's only just turned 28 so actually only a year older than Tosin (27 next month) or Hangeland when we signed him (had just turned 27).

Andersen
Andre
A young forward

And I would stop moaning.

And 8 years younger than Tim Ream

Not sure, was good but didn't have a great last season and made a lot of mistakes. Great long passer though.

Mullers OG

The possibility of signing Andersen is the best news imo of the summer. He's just 28 so has years ahead of him as a top class cb. A bit slow perhaps but dominant in the air, takes no prisoners, would be a leader on and off the field and sprays long balls from the back.

I can't see Palace letting him go but if there's any chance we should go for it.

Feel like everything on there at the moment is between £20m-£30m with some sort of +£5m in add-ons. None of it is at all original or convincing when you hear the same thing used for every player we're in for.

They're bayern munich! The minute they low ball us and the information comes out in the press the player at the much smaller club (us) wants the move for double or treble the wage and to play at the highest level. Then the club is in a position whereby if they dont accept the low ball offer or first counter they could be in a position where they have an unsettled player who throws his toys out the pram and causes problems for the rest of the squad AND have missed out on 40m + in the coffers. Its very different to Fulham submitting a low ball offer to Crystal Palace.

I absolutely loved Andersen. One of the things I was most gutted about when we went down was knowing that we'd lose him. Out of all the defenders we have been linked with miles ahead for me. Leader, physical, great in the air and watching 60 yard pin point cross field ball after cross field that year we had him was a joy. His only real weakness (and it's significant) is pace but Bassey is perfect next to him as he is of course pretty electric to mop up if required. If Bassey got injured Cuenca is also slow so that would be a concern but Bassey/Andersen would be perfect.

When comparing to Carlos by all accounts Villa wanted £15m+ add ons but 3 years difference in age is a long time in football so that is also a huge amount. Yes no resale value with Andersen either but we would get 5 full years at the top level with him. Andersen salary is currently £20k less a week (£5.2m less over a 5 year contract so significant) but who knows what either would cost us if we signed them...unlikely either would drop so Carlos may well be more. There is no way we offer Carlos 5 years as well so lthat will increase his amortised fee on the books.

I think the fan reaction is telling as well. Most Villa fans are absolutely desperate to get rid. Most Palace fans seem desperate to keep. We'd also be weakening a direct rival and they would be in the position we are now seemingly struggling to find a top RCB for a decent price. There must be one somewhere in a random league but as yet not heard any rumours so looking bleak if we don't do something like this.

The thing with this is I don't think Palace are going to accept less than £35m. They have said £40m but surely they are tempted for a 28 year old with a few years left on contract if we go to £35m.

To be honest I'm torn with that. It's a crazy amount of money for a 28 year old but we are desperate for a good passer who is great in the air and who could take us to another level. None of the other options do this from my perspective so I would be very tempted to go there to get this done with hopefully a £30+£5 deal.

This year books then so far if it happened that would be roughly:

ESR £27m
Cuenca £5m
Andersen £30m
Total £62m

I think it's more than possible with the championship year gone and the two big sales we still have another £50 million to spend on top of that. For me André plus either a CM or LW depending where he is planning on playing AP/ESR in the main. I'd personally be ecstatic if we could pull all that off and would fancy a push for Europe at that point.

This is the critical quality Andersen possesses that makes him so valuable to us. Without a centre-back who is comfortable with the ball at his feet, our ability to play out from the back, in the manner Silva has always had us do, is compromised.

To other clubs that play a different style of football or that already have a centre-back who can ping a pass, Andersen's value may not be as much. To us, however, as Marco isn't going to change the way we play, his value is possibly greater. How many points might be dropped over the course of a season through trying to play out from the back with a player who is less adept than Andersen? If we do strike a deal that rises to £35M, come the end of the season, the additional prize money from a higher league placing could offset the extra we stump up.

Having said this, from what I've saw of him on MotD last season, he may need to sharpen up his defending - back to the level he produced for us.

Fair enough
Although you could point to any number of clubs that lead with a low ball offer, it happens all the time everywhere, I only used Palhinha because it was a recent example of it happening here.

If that doesnt work for ya then look to us who low balled with ESR when early in the summer they were reportedly wanting around 40m for esr. We went in way under and then settled on high 20s with addons on top

Again, just one example of many such cases. Dont ask dont get, its a negotiation process and in this instance its for a 28 year old with only 2 years left on contract so really dont think its a million miles off fair valuation all things considered.

Happy to disagree though if ya not convinced there's enough evidence to support that opinion, fair dos

Andersen £30m

I think it's more than possible with the championship year gone and the two big sales we still have another £50 million to spend on top of that. For me André plus either a CM or LW depending where he is planning on playing AP/ESR in the main. I'd personally be ecstatic if we could pull all that off and would fancy a push for Europe at that point.

Equally as keen as you and ya make some good points imo. Would quite happily take either him or diego though so just glad that both of these CBs look an upgrade either way.

Although knowing us we could well sign someone out the blue we had no idea was even in the mix 😂
Either way, evidentally bidding continues.
