Other posts have got me thinking... Does anyone know what we've said or done with Vini and Mbabu?

I've not seen either in any club videos

I know they're surplus to requirements but it would be a shame if we've exiled them to train alone at MP

It was reported by multiple people that they stayed and trained alone at MP while the rest of the squad was in Portugal/Germany. As I said, I hope for their and our sake we sell them as soon as possible. Current situation suits no one.

Cheers for the info. Shame but as you say current situation isn't tenable, let's hope they both get good moves (for good fees!) asap

Quote from: Surlyc on August 12, 2024, 01:58:17 PMSelling academy players to create short term financial headroom is the equivalent of using your overdraft to buy lottery tickets - if you don't win, eventually everything will unravel. It highlights the hypocrisy of FFP, as it actually incentivises short term gambling over the long term health of a supposed community asset.

With regards Bowie & Bowat, I think this a positive step for the academy. It may not be with us, but we created a potential career for them in professional football and hopefully that will encourage more young players to sign on with us. Would I prefer more money? Sure, but it's better than the nothing we usually generate!

It may well be my lack of understanding, but in your first paragraph, you seem to question the wisdom of our selling our Academy players whereas, in your second paragraph, you are extolling the benefits of our selling them. So where do you stand on the matter?
To be fair, it's probably my poor writing!

I think it is good to sell academy players if they aren't going to break into the first team squad. It's much better than letting them go for free, both in terms of money and in terms of perception. However selling a a first team former academy player for £20m of "pure profit" to fund just the amortisation on £100m of transfer fees is the short road to financial hell.

To put it another way if we see a first team future for Bowie and Bowat but sell them for £1.5m (or whatever it is) just as a way to cover one year's amortisation on a £7.5m signing, that's madness. If we are selling them because they need to play and we can never give them that, it's the right approach.

Being touted around

If their agent fancies taking vinicius back with him on the plane as part exchange would be happy to oblige!

Quote from: Craven Mad on August 12, 2024, 09:03:25 PMCan someone correct me if I'm wrong, but because Liverpool added another sell-on clause in the sale to Brentford, we get:

- around £5m from the original transfer to Liverpool,

- around another £5m now from the transfer to Brentford AND

- 20% of 17.5% profit if/when Brentford sell Carvalho in the future, right?

If so, not a totally terrible outcome for us in the end...

As for Brentford, I think they've overpaid but they may have a good player or they may have a stinker... Carvalho worked well in a Marco Silva system and has worked less well under other managers' systems... Thomas Frank doesn't seem to play a system that'd be ideal for Fab (because he doesn't use a CAM) but there's no doubt that he was amazing in that one season for us.

Personally, for us now, I'd rather Iwobi at LW and ESR at CAM, so I don't think we could offer Fabio the starting slot he needs at this stage of his career.
we are not entitled to anything form the Liverpool sell on clause, our sell on was what liverpool sold him for above what they paid £5 million.

So we got the optional £5 million and are then due 20% on the difference between the fee they get in guaranteed money and the original fee, then 20% of the add ons when they are hit

Thanks. Is there anything you can point to as evidence for that being the case?

Only because I'd be somewhat surprised because selling clubs could effectively circumvent pre-existing sell-on clauses by selling the player to an associated third party for £0 plus a 100% sell-on.

Essentially, sell-on clauses are added as an alternative to an upfront fee, so have a monetary value that presumably should remain within the scope of any pre-existing rights over the player(?)

Similarly, I would expect that we'd also get 20% of the (reportedly) £7.5m add-ons, to the extent those clauses are ever triggered.

I'm not a sports lawyer, but it would be a pretty major 'miss' if these contracts don't operate in that way!

Bae Junho looks a lot more effective than Sess wide left forward.

I dunno about that, Sessegnons stats in the championship at LW, as we know, were more impressive and at a younger age. Since then hes mostly been deployed at LWB and LB I gather.... Decent as Bae Junho looks on his hightlight reel. Haven't dived too far into that rabbit hole beyond rough stats and that though

Effectiveness sess stats there were better but I will say the eye test Bae looks way more comfortable on the ball and dribbling. Sess main thing there was always being the right place and doing the simple stuff effectively

Quote from: Deuce on August 12, 2024, 07:06:40 PMIm not feeling anything re Carvalho.

He was doing great for us and was well on his way becoming a regular for a PL side but as soon as Liverpool dangled the cash in front of him, he left.

He wasted a few important years of his career when he absolutely didnt have to.

Im sorry I cant feel anything towards him.
Personally I think we blew that one. Under Marco he would be a huge success
Yes but it was probably Marco who didn't want him, if that's the case then we have missed nothing.

Don't disagree with this, but ultimately it'll just depend how the original Ful>Liv clause was worded, which we're never going to know

A very fair point!

Hopefully we get a bit more money from the transaction in the coming years

With Bowat, Bowie, etc its not either/or but about options. For instance their sale could create a financial situation where the club could sign Raul's (or TC, etc) replacement this season rather than wait until the contract is up. That's just one of a myriad of options each small sale can provide.

I wholeheartedly agree with your point about using sales to fund the club though. Based on how the transfers have been completed over the past few seasons I don't see any evidence this is the case though

How about Adrien Rabiot - Apparently a free agent and 29. A central midfielder.. surely worth a punt?

Anthony Martial - 28 and a free transfer option... a RW, but could play on the left, or free up others like Adama to do so?

Know he was much maligned at Utd, but he did have a knack for scoring and I feel under Marco he could find his feet again..

"Still, La Gazzetta dello Sport believe there are six clubs interested in picking five-time Ligue 1 champion up.

They include a quartet of Premier League sides in Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, as well as Turkish Super Lig giants Galatasaray."

Sounds like hes got or will have plenty of offers on the table way above our current level and is mulling them over, allegedly turned down man utd already, liverpool heavily linked

Read that Liverpool might let Bajcetic go out on loan - injured all of last season but he was so good when he broke into that side the year before

And are they getting rid of Endo too? If they're shedding defensive midfielders there are worse places we could look
