Summer Silly Season Transfer Thread 2024

Slightly bored of having a transfer thread with no transfers or transfer news to discuss - has all gone very quiet and with 4-5 days until the season starts and 20? days until the window closes, we're running very low on time *again*...

Eurgh, this is tedious AF. Why do the club insist on doing this EVERY window.. have they no ability to do better. Groan/gripe over.

Are we this Dopamine addicted as a society that under 24hours is too long without more new news?
We aren't in a desperate situation here,  we have just under 3 weeks till September 1st and have a team more than capable of starting at Man Utd (who by the way are currently starting Jonny Evans at this point).  Then we play Ipswich and Leicester followed by 14 days before the next game following the end of the window

Plenty of time to bring in the players needed. Av a cocktail and a picnic and let what will be be, no amount of tearing ya hair out daily is gonna change it.

Thing is, the way FFP works, selling a home product for £5M gives us £20M to spend on a 4 year contract.  It's true we then have to carry that cost forward and wages likely to be a lot higher but it is a way of managing FFP to get players ready to go now.

For me it's a major weakness of FFP and clubs like Chelsea abuse the system to gain advantage so why should we not do also. 

It's also clear that selling good players who will not be premier ready for some time makes total sense from our and their point of view.  Academy costs do not count towards FFP costs but sales help as per above.  Rather like developing the ground to create more revenue to support FFP where as the capital cost of the re-build does not impact FFP.

Carlos has been 'happening' for over a week now, and yet we're apparently 'close' - like we have been with Andre for most of the summer  - until we weren't...

We need a RCB, DM, CM at a minimum and a LW ideally. Given how slow it takes us to get anything done, and how often we waste time going down dead ends, I think it's fair to expect us to be linked with more than just two players for the same position... when there are no guarantees of it being done.

Seems like the type of signing to make if all the options aren't available or we use CM budget elsewhere.

What worries me the most about signing Philips is that he hasn't played a lot of minutes & a concern of Pep's was always his match fitness not just injury record. If we bring him in late August, it could be October time he's doing 90 mins for us. I think a Palhinha replacement needs to be ready to slot in quite quickly after signing.

Sure it's possible Anderson doesn't play out, as with all transfers till they are settled, but the point is we are clearly making moves for players still behind the scenes, so let it be.


Additionally - There have been so many instances before where we find out we're in for a deal late and then it's done within a week so why only focus on the long ones? We just signed Cuenca and Sess in that very way. Some take a while, some move quicker, and towards the end of the window they tend to pick up speed which is 3 weeks away.

So why do we *have* to have tons of links flying around every day? Just to appease or relax people stressing about it?... we have no idea what other possibilities might be on the table that we don't know about, that's happened so many times before so why go out ya mind about it, what does it serve? It's not a requirement for the club to let us know every deal or target - we know this by now that there's often stuff we don't hear about. So sincerely, and I really am not saying this to be mean, just take a break from it all if it's actually winding you up this much, and come back on the 1st. Because it's not as though you haven't voiced your thoughts on it plenty already and so at this point, all this is doing is seemingly creating more and more tangible anxiety for you (and perhaps others I don't know) that just doesn't change anything at all about how we're going to do our business.

So surely just take a break and focus on other things that bring less strss and let it play out at this point for your own sake if anything.

I think that the system might be to identify enough players, who meet with MS's approval, stir the pot and wait to see what floats to the top.

It is given that we are not the first choice destination for top players but we are not the last either, so once the top CL clubs have gorged on the feast we scoop up the leftovers.

As to the Academy Players, if MS does not want them it makes no sense to keep them on the books if a good offer comes in. It is also not fair to them.

With regards Bowie & Bowat, I think this a positive step for the academy. It may not be with us, but we created a potential career for them in professional football and hopefully that will encourage more young players to sign on with us. Would I prefer more money? Sure, but it's better than the nothing we usually generate!

Is there any substance in this recent development that Fulham have tabled a 20 million pound bid for Joaquin Anderson.
If it is true, i would have thought Crystal Palace would ask for at least £30 million.
Mind you he is a very good physical centre back.

He is a good experienced player, but will be expensive. Can't see Palace letting both CBs go this summer.

I'm not against this transfer. I think theres a top player in there still and with the right environment and manager he can hit the levels he was at before.

Fulham is the place that seems to kick start careers again. If we could get him on a loan with an option I'd be happy

Was just about to say the same thing.. Wonder why it took so long as they had kept him up post Sess and ESR signing and being put up. Assume a decision has been made in the last week or so. A shame, would've been good to have had him for the new season. Appreciate what he gave us.

Looking at the squad it's obvious where the gaps lie now.

RCB, DM, CM and definitely in need of a LW (and maybe another striker if being greedy).

Only have diop as a RCB, rest of the back line positions we've got two in each position.

Up front we're missing a LW and have two players in each place beyond this. I suppose this could be potentially filled by Stansfield, but given the ambiguity around Muniz's form, it seems potentially wreckless to rely on to many unknowns up front.

I'd say in our midfield, we have one DM in Reed, one CM in Lukic, on ACM in Cairney and Two AM's in ESR and Pereira.
