Quote from: ffcthereligion on August 14, 2024, 08:25:20 AMA defence of Leno castagne Andersen Bassey and Robinson might be the strongest we've ever had at the club. Tete and diop on the bench for a club like us is crazy strong!!
Just think back to Mullery and Moore, it is going to be hard to top that.

Quote from: b+w geezer on August 14, 2024, 10:22:46 AMJust from that interview, one can imagine why Andersen irritates some. He was indeed reported to have done so here -- being parachuted in as captain doubtless ruffled some feathers for starters. And later, morale sank terribly in the last months of his spell, which may have been beyond his control, but doesn't advertise his leadership skills. If willing to pay a premium it would need to be for purely playing reasons.

We've been discussing those reasons in another place. There's no great sense of superiority over Diop in direct defensive engagement skills, it's more about two traits when in possession. His greater comfort on the ball  provides greater security against press and makes for easier advance away from positions of danger. This is visibly a bit of an issue with Diop and goals have been conceded arising from it.

The other advantage relates to the goals for column. Career average long balls per match (from whoscored.com) are: Diop 2. Tosin/Diego Silva 4. Andersen 5.7. Net of inaccuracies, that still means that a season of JA rather than ID yields over 100 more long raking passes for our speed-merchants to hare after. How many of those would result in goals? A fair few, given the quality now possessed in that neck of woods. And/or opponents would have to be that much more cautious in advancing on us.

How much is this on-the-ball factor worth paying for? The pros can be the judge, but extra for sure.

Andersen doesn't make errors all the time like Diop too. In terms of morale sinking at the end of Parker season, I think that must have been a natural tail off when it became inevitable we were going to be relegated. Newcastle went on a sudden run and it became impossible, not sure if we can read anything into his leadership skills there.

Didn't know that about Andersen apparently ruffling some feathers here, but will take your word for it. Where did you read/hear that?

Gotta say its the first Ive ever heard of it so may have also missed it. Was it reported anywhere other than hearsay on here? As you say I think most sides in relegation troubles see tensions but Id look more at the leadership of Parker than the squad tbh, lots of those players went onto good things after all where they werent a unit under the person employed and ultimately responsible for managing them.

Must say if any truth that he was difficult or unliked im pretty sure the whole backroom staff at the club and board would have heard about it and youd logically think we wouldn't be keen on bringing him back if he was a problem, so on the surface that seems unlikely.

But again if theres some source beyond message board rumour for that Im totally open to reading it as quite possible im forgetting or missed it at the time 👍🏼

Rest of bw geezers post I largely agree with, he compliments our needs well and as you say tends to be generally less major error prone (albeit everyone can muck up from time to time Diop does have an occasional very obvious brain fart in him😅)

Like this move given 2 young defenders lining up next to eachother. Good shout, let's see how they get on.

Yeah for me, I say this all the time  and it's probably getting boring for others but I just don't feel comfortable with Diop, it's more than the occasional brainfart - he repeatedly drops absolute clangers to the extent I don't really want him anywhere near the team. If he had some consistency he would be a great player, but feels the list of bad errors is too grave.

Remember Brentford at home last year - it was a non game, going nowhere or anyone's to win and he handed them a goal on a plate on the stroke of half time, and that it was him was a surprise to absolutely no one.

Not to say you can't make a mistake, all players do it here and there - Bassey, Leno, Tete all culprits last year at times - but you never had that expectation or constant fear it was part of a wider pattern.

Surprised at the collective acceptance of Diop as an option really.

I dont think hes any more partial than Tosin to be honest who was frequently caught out most games a couple times being too casual, sometimes punished sometimes got away with it.

Diop generally was strong for us alongside Bassey so I really dont think hes a terrible option given Hes repeatedly proven decent enough for mid table. Our defence the last 2 years  hasn't been bad at all... Last year we conceded the same or less than 7 of thenteams above us, season before without Bassey we were middle of the pack for Goals conceded so hes perfectly decent enough at the back for a mid table defence.

But think everyone universally thinks we can upgrade there and clearly so too do the club given were bidding for starting RCBs.

In the meantime Diop good and experienced enough to play till we get that signing in and especially given he should be plenty good enough to compete with Ipswich and Leicester

My impression of Andersen was not gained from here, albeit it was raised earlier in this thread. It emerged a few times during that season from unofficial sources, plural, one personally known. That doesn't make him to blame for our relegation or a no-no for personality reasons, just not particularly desirable for other than playing reasons.

I'd still favour his signing, in what would be very different circumstances --at least as much because of goals-for factors as those relating to goals against. (Reasons given above).

SP

I don't doubt there were a lot of issues that season but from my seat in the Riverside, it appeared he was still on good terms with the FFC coaches & officials when we played them.

bill taylors apprentice

Regarding Andersen's attitude when with us on loan, if he did have a few issues who could blame him considering the poor management of the team.

Bassey the warrior

As much as I'd love to see us re-sign Andersen, it's hard to see the appeal of him moving, it's at best a sideways move. I suspect he's using the move as leverage to get a new contract.

He may have preferred the lifestyle or set up, or area here depending on where he lived when here last,

He may also enjoy the idea of securing one last big money move in his career at this age, with sign on fees and maybe increased wages, he may see them getting picked apart this summer and think we have a better shot. Could be any number of things really.

Yeah Tosin was also quite error prone, that Sheffield United away performance from him was shocking. Diop was second choice to him though and feel he's definitely clumsier and less reliable than Tosin was. Happy to be proven wrong on this, and know that Diop does have some good games in him - but a mistake is never far away I think. Let's see what happens, looks like he's staying anyway.

JEEVES

So considering we have not yet heard the outcome of our improved offer for Andersen, is this likely to mean it's being considered?

Lighthouse

I know nothing but I don't see how or why Anderson would be sold. As for what happened when he was here last or what may have allegedly occurred or his attitude. The club was very different then and not well run. Not worth considering.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

Diop is prone to making mistakes that look very bad and much of the time when under little or no pressure but while these errors look horrendous how numerous are they over a season?

Does this cloud our judgement when it comes to his general ability, the marvellous blocks, tackles, headers etc he makes?

We shouldn't accept the mistakes and I do see the position as an area to upgrade but overall I see Diop as a decent PL defender

Parish said in so many words yesterday theres no rush for him in their position and that theyd need to go away and talk through the options and work out what they want to do.

Theyll probably be quite happy to wait and see if "superstar" money arrives for Guehi as they said they wanted, and make a call then... All whilst exploring different CB replacement targets. Not expecting an insanely rapid turn around on this given their situation.

That it hasnt been outwardly rejected out of hand yet is interesting so its clearly prompted something for them to discuss internally though

Yeah this is pretty much my thoughts on the matter. Might be a while till we find out the outcome and also means we won't be signing Carlos in the meantime.

It would be nice to sign a player from the lower leagues who can play now and be an asset to the team.
Surely there's talent there and we can spot it?

Wishful thinking or just plain dreaming!

Quote from: hovewhite on August 14, 2024, 09:56:54 AMTypical Fulham playing a game chess with clubs now, frustrating as a supporter isn't it.

The only thing frustrating is that FFC will have played several games before the team is actually settled 1 Sept.  The window schedule is pathetic.......Just one fans' opinion.....
