Quote from: FFC1987 on August 21, 2024, 11:37:07 AMIm struggling to entertain the idea based on Marco's comments that Andre is a potential signing for us. From memory, he said he expected 3 players, DM, forward wide man and a CB didn't he. Unless Berge was an opportunity signing, or, Andre has been golden handshake signing for months as discussed ad nauseam, so Silva had already factored him in as a signing, it would suggest we aren't looking at 2 CM's wouldn't it?  I guess the question is, is Andre simply a pipe dream at this point......

To be fair he did say positions and not numbers of players so leaves it open to interpretation, I'm sure he's not going to turn down more players if given the option. Could also be that we've planned to sell someone in the meantime? We've also not loaned anyone yet and we always have at least 1 so I'd be shocked if it's only 1 more player after Andersen and Berge because we're yet to see a TK special!

True and don;t get me wrong, I know comments aren't fixed, or often completely true, but I just can;t shake the feeling that Andre really is the Koumas dead end signing everyone hoping for, but just won;t materialise. Silvas mentioned Reed and Lukic capable of playing that role, and now Berge technically can as well, I don't know. I think expectations, at least on my end is, gut feeling, that's our lot for the middle of the park.

He did say three players. And when asked if one is a dm he said yes, an then he said we are looking for a rcb and a player "in the attacking line". Unless we sell someone, I can only see us getting some loans/free agents in after getting those three players Marco mentioned.

As DW said though, things can change and maybe someone punts on Reed this window which allows room for Andre but yeh, maybe its my glass of milk is empty, but its just really difficult to see this, and Berge, and Andersen at the quoted prices.

Yeh from his comments it seems unlikely admittedly.

But also that might just be him saying that's what we actively "need" i.e are outright lacking...not that it's limited to those 3 players only should we want to improve squad depth

Well see, im very interested to hear his comments on Berge tbh might give us a good clue of what he's thinking

Especially with the costs Im still filing it under unlikely... But could we? 😂

Yep, I don't mind saying, my comments are likely taken from a dated standpoint, so hearing more from Silva would hopefully give me some confidence in Andre coming. Last nights behaviour was so strange and it did feel like a guy knowing that was his last game in a place he loves (for now anyway). Something just feels very, strange here.....it's either, he's comign and we've known for months/weeks, or, hes off somewhere else and we've known it for a while.

Either way, sure as hell will be an interesting end to this already fantastic window. (Optimism assuming Berge and Andersen are both done).

your comments on Andre, they have been my thoughts also ,a red herring.

revisiting "that" interview - whilst he doesn't rule out more than 3 explicitly he does state those 3 is what "has to come".

It certainly does appear he says that "we are going to sign one player for that position (6) with the..." (goes to say "same" but corrects to say...)  "...the profile that we are looking for to replace Joao"...

So I guess it's a matter of waiting to hear what Marco says about Berge and for now assuming that - especially given his "profile" that he sees him as that layer - till we hear different. Signs currently point to that being the case from what he's said so far...now we wait for more info I guess. For now I'd only look at Andre as an outside bonus should it materialise unless we hear something to the contrary directly.

In which case.....I trust the process, but I'm nervous that we're looking at Reed, Lukic, Berge as possible replacements for Palinha but I repeat....trust the process  :slap:

My gut thinks andre will be in next week. Maybe a loan forward (Stirling might work)

If that happens we would of had good window

I think everyone shares your scepticism, I definitely do, though it may not show when I'm enthusiastically trying to will the signing over the line. As things stand it'd be wise to suggest we're going for Andersen, Berge and a front line option.

that being said - we've had a bid rejected, Andre wants to play in the PL and seemingly had an agreement he could leave, Fluminense apparently have financial difficulties, Marco said he wanted a 6 to replace Palhinha and the arguement could be made that Berge isn't that, but more of an 8... the blurred lines are that he has at times played as a DM, so there's uncertainty there.. then there's the video, which I think most Fluminense fans and fans on this board, including in fairness the players and coaches he hugged and that escorted him off the pitch seemed to acknowledge there was a particular level of meaning to that match..

The other thing that struck me, though it can easily be considered reading too much into it, is when Marco said that we'd be getting in a DM to replace Palhinha he seemed to say it as if he knew we were, almost as if it was certain..

With no new news around Andre since our failed bid, you could assume maybe Berge is it.

But, with the video of Andre last night, and us being the only team that's had a sustained interest in the player from the PL, there's perhaps a different angle? that we're not seeing?

Speculatively, for me, it could make sense that if Marco thought a deal had been agreed (a gentleman's agreement or whatever for Andre, which included him playing through august with Fluminense, or up until last night), then it would add to why he seemed certain a DM/number 6 would come in (which he specifically said he wanted)... and then, if you date that comment to before he said we wanted a RCB, CM and player for the front line, then it could mean he technically wasn't lying and that in his mind it was those three in ADDITION to a DM, which was already done.

Again, this is fanciful and not grounded in anything but speculation and trying to add things up, either creatively or acutely.

If we got in Andre as well as ESR, Cuenca, Andersen, Sessegnon and Berge, and in addition to a front line option then it would've been a fantastic summer.

Luka

I'm liking all our signings so far and we have strength in most areas with the exception of striker.
I struggle to believe that Marco has total faith in Muniz and Jimenez so hoping for a surprise arrival in a striker role.

Porthogs FC

My thoughts are that ESR ends up at LW, we sign Andre, and Cairney is the back-up at the 10 position.

Sterling aware he's surplus to requirements at Chelsea and willing to take a paycut to play this season, get him in on loan maybe??

I'd be interested in what he considers a pay cut to be.....he's on £325k a week.......

Really not sure on this one. He definitely wouldn't get all those soft penalties playing for us.

Somerset Fulham

Christ, I would love to see Stirling play for us.

Taking a small step out of the stress inducing Andre saga, this has really made me laugh.

I could imagine a situation where we do sign a CM, but let one go too (e.g. Reed). £25m in for Andre, £15m out for Reed (e.g. back to Southampton, or even one of the top Championship clubs) would likely be seen as good business at this point. Have Andre on a 5 year deal and the net spend there is quite low, with a lot of upside if he performs well.

I would think Villa has more money to offer than us, and he's too costly for them so can't see us getting Sterling.

If we were going to spend huge money on an attacking player, I'd much rather it be someone we can get on a permanent transfer. Chiesa or Depay would be ideal, but obviously highly unlikely (I think Sterling is equally unlikely too though).

Out of the loan options, Richarlison would be the best option for me. He was Marco's most important player at both Watford and Everton, covers all positions in attack and he loves Marco.
