Please and thank you

Not having a dig at you in the slightest for providing the link, but I find it difficult to place much credence in this when the article begins: 'Fulham have targeted Barcelona's midfield department by launching a concrete €20 million bid for one of their players.
'At Craven Cottage, the recruitment team led by manager Marco Silva has prioritized the acquisition of an elite, young engine-room anchor capable of introducing high-volume passing accuracy and positional discipline to their tactical framework.'

Seems a slightly absurd fee from my perspective. We got seasoned pros who captained pl sides , were legends at their national sides and much more for less, players who'd been key players this summer in teams that got go the quarters and semis of the world cup for far less. How is he worth €27m-€30m in any realistic way?

Trabzonspor only bought him in Jan for €5m apparently.

Those PL experienced players are usually late 20's and want £100k a week, the club can't sign many of them in the SCR era because they will get us fines and points deductions when we exceed thresholds because financially they're bad signings. This guy has been touted as being a future star, his salary will be about £40k a week going by reports which means he'll be on 30 a week less than Diop as an example, and on a long contract we only need him to have a decent season and someone will probably poach him off us at a profit. If this was any of the B clubs there'd be people up in arms - please can you give an example of "players who'd been key players this summer in teams that got go the quarters and semis of the world cup for far less" and provide a realistic comparison (note: using Trossard doesn't count because he's on way north of £100k a week and in his 30's which for a PL club is awful value for money)

howitis

Does seem a lot for a player who is 3rd choice for the right side of CB for Nigeria. Having said that great age (22) and I'm sure Fulham wil have consulted with Bassey and Iwobi on this.
I understand he often plays in a back 5 so maybe that is also something we are considering . Let's hope his skill on the ball is matched by pace/athleticism. Would be great to get back to being more robust defensively.

Berge, Castagne both cost less.. Bobb didn't. Diop cost less.. we've had them at the club for a number of years now, so bought them at younger ages (though maybe not 22), but all had a much more proven pedigree.

Castagne we bought at 27, Diop we bought aged 24/25, Berge was around 25..

I'm not against signing young talent that could do something special, but I am wary of spending €30m on a 22 Yr old who's only ever played in Austria and Turkey.

Bobb had played at Man City, got experience and proven himself in the CL and PL to a degree and Norway, we knew he had something and could play at this level. Kevin had played very well at Shakthar and in Europe as well, including against big clubs..

We got them for the same amount. Feels like we're being fleeced a bit on price, that's all. Maybe £22m-£25m is just the going rate these days for hyped up youth then.

If he comes then I hope he dominates for years to come! But we tend to have limited budget as it is when it comes to transfers.

Would be great but the source doesn't look reputable and also it seems much bigger clubs than Fulham are interested in him.

Every one of those players you named are on much higher salaries than someone like Nwaiwu is on. From an SCR point of view, we cannot have an entire team filled with players on 60k-70k-80k and above and that's what a proven player would cost salary wise.

Rambler

With Nwaiwu How big a chunk (% wise) will this take out of our transfer budget this year?

I'm for it if it's not much but it can't be at 25 mil. I agree with another poster it's a gamble for someone with Austria and turkey as their only competitive leagues

Ha yes the link is a particularly silly season source

But we have been linked elsewhere before and for what it's worth FFN who does have some inside links has suggested he is a target but not our first choice

Dortmund took a gamble on a player who only had Norwegian and Austrian leagues on his CV- Haaland.
Don't think it makes a huge difference personally if the raw talent is there for all to see (which it does in this guys case).

This year - it'll actually be a net positive for the books. Assuming we sell Diop for a decent fee.

Cash spent: €30m out, €15m back = €15m out of pocket

But the sale of Diop counts as ~£10m profit this year (he's almost paid off in the books, so nearly the whole fee is profit)

The Nwaiwu buy only counts as ~£7.5m cost this year (the €30m gets spread over his 4-year deal, not counted all at once)

So on the books: +£10m in, −£7.5m out = about +£3m better off this year

net positive for FFP this year - even though we "spent" more cash than we got back

Downside: that Nwaiwu £7.5m cost repeats for the next 3 years, with no more Diop profit to cover it.

And of course if we get more than 15m euros for Diop it's even better on paper for this year. The fee remains a gamble of course. I have mentioned it's a lot for someone untested...but this year it's likely a net gain books wise at least, assuming we sell Issa.

Plus the wages difference of being circa £30k a week better off makes a £1.5m improvement towards SCR too

Bronaldinho

I said it on a few other threads - but Nwaiwu is a decent player. Yes only 6 months in Turkey, but European leagues are getting so much more competitive with every passing year that the gap is much smaller.

Leeds signing Muharemovic for £35m is similar. Where he was in Austria 2 years ago, and had 1 season in Serie B, one season in Serie A and now 35m defender.

Fees are sky high. If Nwaiwu is 27m EUR then that's about 22m GBP - a big difference to Muharemovic with similar experience.

Nwaiwu only just turned 22 - big, strong, aerial threat, decent ball playing defender and fast. Rare you get a player like that available.

Palacios rumours still circulationg.

For context, he was believed to be the more talented player than Nico Paz in academy days I gather.
Got an ACL injury and it set him back but Real fans still speak very highly of him but mostly agree he'll have to move on much like Paz to develop.

Aside from the financial benefits discussed above regarding this year + SCR.

the comment about TK stats based decision - we were linked to this guy early in summer before Silva left.
We're still linked after. Reports are AA has long been in discussion about player acquisition and transfer target assessment too - Which suggests both managers were happy with the player however he was spotted first

The fact the fee feels high is likely more indicative of pushing negotiations early - which everyones been calling for and complaining about for a long time. This feels like the type of deal we'd have been a little harder on negotiationing for in previous windows and, possibly taken it till later in the window.

But with all the pressure, talk and interviews about getting people early, and the club having publically told silva they would try and move quicker this summer, given his persistant requests to do so... this is what can happen. You don't get to play hardball in the same way, and you often have to cough up a bit more money by all accounts. That's the balancing act.

Would be a good signing to get done to compete with Kevin at LW without spending a great fee. Someone Arbeloa knows well and someone who is highly rated by Madrid fans. No brainer!

It is also worth noting that Trabzonspor lost only twice in the league after he arrived and started playing.
