Sincere question: what stats are you looking at?

I had a look at Rios (WhoScored) and wasn't especially impressed.

Andre on the other hand looks the absolute business (eg 94% passing accuracy last year with an average 75 passes per game).

Fbref mate. Comparing 2023 club seasons. As mentioned in my full post RĂos passing stats aren't great at all but that is why Andre could compliment him very well. RĂos has 2.23 the successful take ons per 90 vs 1.4 for Andre and has a lower tackled percentage rate. Considering Andre is very good at these things think this shows he is good beating folk with the ball under pressure. Compare this to Lukic has 0.4 and this shows the difference. Progressive carries per 90 RĂos has 1.99 vs Andre 0.4 and Lukic 0.96.

Defensively they look very similar. Ríos beats Andre on tackles and on tackles won, challenges and blocks. Andre much higher on interceptions. Again could balance off quite nicely. Both fairly similar to Lukic for defensive stats. Fluminense had well over 60% of the ball so André naturally probably did less defending.

Trying to interpret the stats then I'd say RĂos is a brilliant carrier of the ball who can beat men. With his Futsol background that makes sense. Andre is a brilliant passer but also very good at take ons. This is why they should both be press resistant and where they are an upgrade on Reed and Lukic potentially. Defensively they are similar to what we have already got in Reed and Lukic. When Joao didn't play last year we played them both deeper to cover the defensive stats and think we'd need to with these two as well. I doubt we'd be seeing Cairney for example as an 8 with any of these guys unless we are losing and need a goal as will need two to cover Joaos defensive work.

Not sure where Drewry gets their stats, but I find FBRef to be really useful.

It basically takes each player's stats from Opta over the last 365 days and compares it to players in the same position who've played over a certain number of minutes in the past year.

https://fbref.com/en/players/ec604e2c/Andre

You can see from this that Rios is basically a ball carrier and Andre is more of a passer.

WhoScored is great but FBRef is a bit more of a rough guide.

Interesting. Yeah I got the impression Rios' USP is dribbling. Not sure where a central midfielder with that profile fits into our team, unless perhaps he's a Carvalho-type we're signing as a backup/alternative to Perreira. Doesn't sound like he's the answer for either of the two DM/CM slots behind.

I'm still slightly struggling with the Rios rumour, albeit I can't claim to know huge amounts about him, but the stats that stood out to me are his 'progressive passes received' along with his shot stats. Basically, unlike Andre (who's also good at dribbling), Rios seems to be very effective at finding the right spaces to personally receive the ball on the front foot, carry it forward, and get a decent shot off.

With Palhinha gone, it seems like we may be in for a slight tactical change, towards a CM pairing of a deep lying playmaker who's comfortable on the ball (Andre) and a marauding CM who's comfortable to join the attack (Rios).

But who knows, it may all be agent talk...

He's a DM or CM mate and looking at history he has played both a lot but looks like he has developed more into an 8. Andre is a pure 6 so that would work well. Defensively as above he would still contribute a lot I think but would give us some flair going forward. Last few years one of our biggest weaknesses has been when teams have pressed us high. These two could transform that. Neither do much final third attacking wise but the theory would be that they get the ball from back to front much better and give to attacking players to do their thing whilst working together to cover Joao s defensive work.

Drewry66

Just to add although RĂos is one of the most exciting rumours but also prob the most risky.

Similar price to McTominay rumoured. McTominay you know what you are getting. Solid prem player with years of experience who will work hard, pop up with some goals and will prob support a good 6 well. No real flair however and very little resale value in 3 or 4 years.

RĂos has only really made it in the last year after not even playing 11's professionally until he was 20 from what I understand and failed first year or two. By all accounts got better and better however the last few and one of the stars of the Copa. Clip reels I know but some brilliant stuff from the Copa from one I watched. No prem experience of course. Plenty of flair and potentially massive resale value if successful like Andre.

Which would you go for?

I'm not usually a gambler but I'd be all in for RĂos. Think McTominay is a decent player but I want the excitement factor and potential profit. Even if only one of RĂos and Andre came off an £80m+ sale in a few years would be massive for us. Could be a flop but if we want to be successful with these new FFP rules coming in selling for big profits is crucial.

All completely ridiculous anyway since we're probably not even actually in for either as these rumours are such BS but I'm so bored waiting for a signing so why not.

I have een F all off him so I have no idea, but id say hes more of an 8 than anything else. Being a good dribbler in that position (who also can put in a tackle) and can break the lines would be quite a nice upgrade for us. Just as when Dembele was at his prime. Strong yet good dribbler

Does a DM with "flair" work in a mid-table PL team? Maybe that works in Brazil where he's one of the best players in the league but I think in the PL outside the top 6, unless you're in the Perreira/10 role I really just want someone who can tackle and pass (ie Andre).

I've not seen him play of course, but going on these descriptions/stats just not really seeing it. If anything he feels more like a plan B for the ESR deal.

With that said I am now remembering Dembele I was a DM who liked to dribble, and he wasn't bad for us in fairness.
I wouldnt take it too literally. A DM is just the position, much like McTominay is also familiar with playing further down in a midfield but is not a player whos strengths is sitting deep and breaking up play.

Pirlo played as a DM, but is the opposite of someone like Palhinha. Its juste where they sometimes operate.

If we were to buy Rios Id very much doubt we would put him in any lone DM slot. It would be - as suggested above- along with someone who balances things out.

If he didn't have the defensive stats yes but as I say quite similar to Andre and Lukic in that respect. Looks very physical. I like Lukic and he stepped in for Joao brilliantly last season but I think it is that lack of ability to take people on and drive the team forward sometimes that frustrates people and makes them ask what is he contributing. I suppose RĂos potentially offers the defensive side but also has the skill to drive the team forward. I've barely seen him however so all just based on stats and short clips so who knows.

Reminds me a bit of last summer when we were heavily linked with Fred and we were all (?) dreaming of a Jogo Bonito midfield with André, Fred, Pereira and Willian. I wouldmt mind having André and Rios as a new duo, but its risky

Regarding the fee. Ive seen paper talks about United wanting 40 m pound for McTominay, and so far Ive only seen "bids" of around 20 m pound for Rios being rejected. So McTominay would likely demand a bigger fee, unless Rios price gets inflated a lot due to a good tournament.

Personally id go for McTominay. Im worried  that Rios is too much of a unknown quantity and right now hes the flavour of the month. Hopefully - if we end up buying him - its because we have had our eyes on him prior to this tournament and not buying him because of his performance this summer

Yeah that is the massive risk...one tournament wonder no matter how good he looked so we'd be taking a punt. Saw reports saying they want £30 million for him. That would be a big punt but seems the fee for frigging everyone at the mo. McTominay various reports from £25m to £40m. Anything over £30m with little resale for me rules him out. £25m to £30m he is a very solid player for 3 or 4 years so would be happy with that if we got Andre along side him.

https://hammyend.com/index.php/2024/07/torino-turn-down-fulhams-ricci-bid/

Torino have turned down a Fulham bid for their defensive midfielder Samuele Ricci worth £16.87m, according to Tuttosport.

The Italian newspaper claims that the Whites tabled a significant offer over the weekend for the Italian international after losing Joao Palhinha to Bayern Munich earlier this month. But the approach was immediately rejected by Il Toro, who are not interested in selling the Pontedera-born holding midfielder this summer and plan to offer Ricci, whose current contract runs until the summer of 2026, a new deal.

The 22 year-old has shone at the base of Torino's engine room since signing from Empoli in January 2022. The classy and combative midfielder enjoyed an excellent campaign last term, scoring once in 33 appearances, as Paolo Vanoli's side finished ninth in Serie A. Tuttosport suggests that Fulham would need to cough up at least another £10m to seriously test Torino's resolve to keep hold one of Italy's brightest talents.

There was a transfer strategy meeting today with Marco, Ali Mac, Talbot etc present. Went through a list of around 7 concrete targets - many of whom have been mentioned on here and by the media (I.e. Rios, Andre, ESR etc). I'm expecting a big acceleration in transfer buisness over the next week or so!

Err...should they not have had this meeting before the transfer window opened rather than a week into pre-season?

 :slap:

Marco said they had a clear targets list in an interview before the season ended didn't he?

Or was this more a meeting of Marco saying why the F are none of them here yet?! Seem to remember reports were that he had one of them last year half way through the window.

Anyway not sure your source mate but frigging hope you are right re acceleration in transfer business as complete stand still on the starting grid at the mo.  ::cry::

To each their own I guess but why is sell on value so important just for this one? It has never been anywhere near the top of Fulham list. Why should it be the deciding factor just now?

McTominay is as secured guaranteed quality as we can get when it comes to all the midfield 8s we are being linked with. So even if we wont dubble his market value, he will most likely become a vital cog more or less instantly, that surely would be worth the money on its own. Same guarantees cant be said about Rios.

So if it was my money to invest, Id go for the sure thing rather than roll the dice on Rios and perhaps end up with nothing. But hey, different strokes and all that
