Quote from: Lighthouse on July 30, 2024, 08:30:21 PMI don't understand the Stansfield obsession. I would think he would prefer first team football than another season on loan or hardly ever in the match day squad at Fulham. A good young player who deserves a chance to play in the Championship.

Maybe, but Birmingha are not in the Championship.

Something doesn't feel right about this. Jay may not have been tested in the Prem yet but I cannot see us letting him go to Birmingham at that price. And didn't Marco say he intended to use him in the squad this season?

I don't think the Birmingham link is that important. My point is he deserves first team football. The Coach would like the player to fill up the squad and play in cup matches etc. But would the player of his quality really be happy doing that for another season.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

Stansfield's biggest issue is he doesn't fit in Marco's system that well. We don't play a second striker. He could play in Pereira's position but that's much deeper than a SS and he's not really a playmaker. Marco also prefers someone more physical as a lone striker. He can play as a winger but he isn't as good out there.

Still it would be idiotic for him to go the League One and it would be idiotic to sell him for £5m.

Quote from: Caedal on July 30, 2024, 08:19:20 PMWe'd have to have a buy back clause and a high sell on percentage clause to make it make sense. I can't believe he'd be sold for 5m regardless.

Yep. If there was a buy back and a massive sell on clause it'd be fine IMO.

My view is that our transfer business over the past few years has been very good. They've made a good fist of a couple of difficult sales (Mitro, Joao) and have signed a few very good players (including Joao).

The "bad" transfers have been broadly out of their hands, if you include Elliot, Carvalho.

I don't think we're getting our pants pulled down over Stansfield.

Not to be contrary but has he really made an unassailable case to be in our current match day squad? Our team is not bad... he hasn't really shown that much has he? McCormack had a better goal scoring record in the Championship, just as a quick comparison (maybe we can say he played in better teams, who knows).

Interesting interview with leno. He appears to be trusting and believing in the process here so 🤞🏼
Team seems to be removing too much expectancy of set outcomes next year whilst being quietly confident they can push on.

Leno's a smart cookie. He knows we're on page 129 so transfers are imminent.

It certainly is shite. Even more so because of the sum being mentioned. Hope it ain't true

Man City sold Liam Delap for £15m. Similar age to Stansfield, I would argue Stansfield's stats are better, so I fail to see how we would sell Jay for only £5m

I broadly agree with this.

I'd say the Stansfield link feels disappointing right now but that's without knowing if we'll drive up the price / get favourable terms in the end or if the player is pushing for the move.

Let's see how it develops.

He goes he is bottling a chance at the top level.

Jota Silva to Forest. Been linked with him quite a bit but probably wasn't happening once we got ESR even though it probably still would have been a good signing for the price to be depth.

Thought him a decent purchase at a good price but indeed not really necessary with ESR, Iwobi and Sess capable at LW and Adama, Wilson and Iwobi on the right... Plus of course Godo also as the youth option on both wings. So were not really in much need of wing options right now.

Money better aimed at CBs and DM first

The Stanno thing has been ongoing for longer than the press has caught on sadly. I do think that he has an appetite to play week in week out, which is a real shame as I think he would have been a mainstay in the side in a year or two.

Re incomings Andre and McTom are not one or the other in our eyes apparently, we want both. For CBs, we are doing our usual method of spreading the net far and wide to negotiate the best terms with the top priorities. All part of the game which we have grown to love... or hate!

Any other names besides Mengi at CB?

Cheers

The Stanno thing was first mentioned almost 2 months ago so nothing new.

Agree with this 100%.

If we get a cb and a dm/cm in, who are of ESR's or similar quality I'll already be pretty happy with our squad (providing no one else leaves). Anything on top of that would be icing on the cake.

Also I'd much rather we focused on getting high quality signings in those two positions, then get 5-6 signings but of lesser quality.

I can really see Andre and McT complimenting each other. McT definitely would work as an 8 with his late runs into the box and eye for goal but also will provide some cover (see the McFred double pivot a few years back).

I can see him and Andre basically being a hugely upgraded tactical equivalent of Lukic-Reed.

As for the CBs well no surprise there if true - we always seem to be linked to about 3 at any time lol.

What are the names this year beyond Chalobah and Mengi? Morato and also Oosterwolde. Can't remember if there are any others...

Changing direction a bit, I think the Saints got a good deal with Diaz. 7 million is a bargain

Yeah, this is the thing I don't get with the reported price - and Delap was £15m with £5m in addons!

I can see a scenario where Silva is happy to let him go, and Jay wants to play first team football. But Birmingham in League 1 for £5/6m is peanuts in modern football, when he has another 3+1 years on his contract. I get the Championship isn't awash with cash - there are only a couple of signings in that ballpark this Summer (who weren't already obligations to buy) - but it would also make so much more sense for his development to push for a move to an ambitious Championship club rather than Birmingham.

There's definitely no smoke without fire, and Birmingham are definitely interested. It may also be we're actually putting the story out there to see what interest there is.

The other two things I don't get is, a) Marco Silva has already said Jay will be with the first team this season, and b) I think Jay can get close to 20 championship goals next season if he's in a good team, which would give a high valuation. So either way, selling him this window doesn't make much sense to me.

I think the rumour is nonsense.

Also worth noting his club were reportedly wanting his 18m release clause earlier in the window. Then it was 12m now it sounds like forest offer is 5m up front + addons. We can afford that im sure, so if we really wanted him still wed have made an offer. Hes also far more likely to get game time there according to a forest buddy, says CHO and elanga are their only decent wingers
