I wouldn't mind him at all. Was exceptional at Sevilla. Mixed performances at Villa, but would be a good signing imo.

He also got sent off in a friendly recently. Two separate yellows looking at it. He's done well there as its usually quite difficult for refs to dish out cards in friendlies  :slap:

He's 31 and on higher wages. Have a hard time seeing this unless it's a loan.
He has 3-4 more good years imo. If the transfer fee amd wages are reasonable, I thinl he'd be an okay option.

The thing is, I don't see many rcb options. They are either unrealistic, not good enough, too expensive or old.

Not really sure what makes you think there's a lack of options out there for an RCB so we need to hedge our bets into a guy whose struggled at Villa, is 31, on a lengthy contract taking him to 2026 on currently £100k a week.

Like, I'm not writing the guy off and Silva wants, great, but I'm struggling to appreciate in the entire world of football, there's a distinct lack of RCB's at our disposal so this is one of our limited options.

I trust the process and if Carlos is the best for both performance and value, great. I just trust the process enough to think there's likely other options as well I guess.

Carlos at RCB would immediately make us better and I think would easily have 2-3 seasons more in him at this level given he doesn't actually have that many miles on the clock compared to a lot of 31 year olds.

If you could get him for the right price (say £15m), then he is a sure thing even if he's on £100K a week.

I'd prefer younger with potential to sell for profit down the line, but he is proper quality. You never know but there could also be some thinking that there is no need to buy a young RCB when Diop isn't that old, and you see the potential for LDF to transition into that slot in a couple of years.

I never said he's our only option. I only said he's an "okay option" or a "decent option".

I do think the market for rcbs is pretty difficult now. I looked at hundreds of rcbs and none of them are ideal. That's why I said that they are either unrealistic, not good enough, too expensive or old. Diego Carlos is a bit old, Mengi is unproven, Chalobah is too expensive if you look at the quality/price ratio + his injury issues. Almost all options have some problems.

As for his contract, I said it clearly, if it is a deal that makes sense for all three parties (Fulham, Villa and Carlos), it would be a good deal for us. Of course I'd be against it if Carlos demanded unreasonable wages or Villa an unreasonable fee.

He hasn't 'struggled at Villa'. He had a horrific injury, and following a relatively slow easing back into the team was a regular starter in a team that qualified for Champions League football.

The only reason he'd be available is that they need to balance their books, and we could take advantage of that.

' The thing is, I don't see many rcb options. They are either unrealistic, not good enough, too expensive or old.' this was you wasn't it? So I think you've both misinterpreted what I said and then started by claiming aomething that also wasn't said ie 'only option'. I said 'lack of options' which I've quoted above from you on what you actually said.

Whether options are available, I'm
Not a scout, shock horror, but unless I'm mistaken, are you? Because that's what I mean by trusting the process. Just because we might of scoured the internet for a possible RCB and not found one, also doesn't mean it doesn't assist. We have a vast network which has probably identified the players a year ago.

As for contract, is offering a 31 year old, a 3 year contract which is likely the minimum based on current deal, on wages of 100k wise? I'm just not sure it is and nor do I think the club will so it's really difficult to see how a deal that suits all parties is really possible without offering those sorts of terms.

As for Atoms assessment, i watched him a few times last year, I thought he struggled at times but perhaps that was part of his post injury recovery.

Maybe it's a good deal but as I said, I trust the process and do think there's likely more options than maybe is being pitched here.

"so we need to hedge our bets into a guy whose struggled at Villa" this was the part that made it sound like he's the only option, but if I completely misinterpreted it I am sorry.

As for the other part, maybe Tony, Marco and the recruiting team can pull a rabbit out of the hat and get some rcb that ticks all the boxes, but I'm pretty sure he'll have one of those problems that I have mentioned.

As for him struggling at Villa, I'd say he had some games in which he was MOTM and some games in which he was pretty poor mixed with some average performances. So overall, he's been pretty inconsistent. The injury obviously didn't help. That being said, he did start a lot of games for them last season and helped them get CL football. From what I have seen from Villa fans online, their main problem is his erratic behaviour that occurs sometimes. The red card in their previous friendly was a good example of that.

Side note, I'd be happy for Pereira to go for anything £25m upward - massive FFP profit and I'd say he's fairly easily replaceable

Somerset Fulham

I have five United supporting pals (two of which are lower level sports journalists) and they are surprised that McT isn't going to a newly promoted side.

Good, honest pro who could work wonders in a changing room but ultimately quite limited.  That said, they also said that United fans love him.

Just had a slightly deeper look into Mctominay's career stats and interestingly he's largely been played by Man Utd as a defensive midfielder and done well in that position. Last season was the season he played the most as a CM and not a DM and his output for scoring went up considerably. He played around 32 games with what seems like a relatively even split across DM and CM, scoring 1 goal from DM and 6 from CM. He scored those 6 goals from 16 games as a CM.

Interestingly, he hardly if ever scores when playing as an AM or SS.

He's played as a DM against quite a few big clubs and with Utd winning those games on the PL and also CL.

Having gone through his stats, I'm actually more in favour of us signing him then I was before. Especially if Marco brings him in and plays him as a CM, which despite playing DM most of the time, does seem to be a better position for him tactically output wise. It also kinda speaks truth to what utd fans have said, but also dismisses what they've said too, as he must've done quite a bit of the defensive work they say he doesn't do to have played DM for utd for so long and for them to also get results against top clubs, - man city, Barcelona, ac Milan etc..

At 27, it feels like we may have approached him under the appreciation that he's got a lot more to offer as a CM and that he hasn't been fully utilised or given the opportunity as a CM, and perhaps Marco and his team think we can get him, play him there and take his game to another level.

If he scored 6 goals from CM and 1 from DM split over equal number of games, then over a season and in a settled role, you could be looking at a 12-15 goal a season player, almost double his current output.

Chuck in andré to support him and ESR/iwobi to pass the odd ball from the sides to the edge of the area, then we could be onto something.

His stats can be found below.

I don't think any of the players we've brought in are to replace Pereira but to compliment him.

Mctominay has been playing as a DM for most of his time at Utd and only recently started playing more as CM, see post above/earlier about this.

André is a DM out and out..

Esr can obviously pivot and play in the AM role, but arsenal fans say he's best being played as a LW and if we didn't play ESR there then we'd have noone to play as a LW. It seems like the natural fit. This all seems to give Pereira more freedom than he's had up until now playing alongside players simply with better calibre.

It is very frustrating for us fans, but maybe not everything is signed, maybe Arsenal still have things to do, could be a multitude of reasons. If he plays in the friendly then we know he is registered as otherwise I think he would have to be listed as a trialist as he is another clubs player.

Out of interest, does anyone know if there'll be a press conference before or after the match with Marco?

My gut is telling me there won't be, but it'd be nice to hear from Marco and have someone get the opportunity to pin him down re transfers and in particular ESR if not announced soon.

Sorry General, didn't mean to suggest any of the players we're seriously linked with were direct replacements, but instead if we got offered that sort of money I would take it and then look for a replacement with the profit we make, since I would suggest his attacking output could be improved on for that sort of money
