Quote from: Deeping_white on August 22, 2024, 01:51:34 PMI'm fairly sure we have some financial headroom for more signings after Andersen and a winger @ circa £20m. Berge being on a 5 year deal means the amortisation for his fee is further reduced this year, and I would say both Andersen and a winger will be on 5 year deals so we should have enough money left for another signing or two if we wanted to. I think Andre could come down to a game of chicken if there are no takers because they'll need to accept our bid, and he's likely to cost somewhere in the region of ££7m P/A too so then you're looking at some loans or prospects if the opportunities arise if we wanted to go any further

I really, really want to be optimistic but why on earth would our PR team pose a question to a new signing about both where he plays (outrightly said mostly as no.6) and then ask him how he feels about replacing Palinha if he wasn't the replacement......I'd say at this point, there's as much chance of us signing Mitoma as there is Andre.

Happy to be wrong on this one but we perhaps just need to move on.

I'm not sure they're really going to know though are they? It's hardly like Marco is gonna brief them on his squad or plans for the team, the impression I got was that he's a similar style player so it just seemed like a natural question to ask. Maybe we won't sign another CM, but I wasn't reading into something a content manager was saying as being indicative of our transfer business, because feasibly he could be one half of a palhinha replacement next to Andre as we know none of our existing midfielders can do what JP did.

Looking at the squad, we have 23 senior players at the moment(24 if you count Andersen, who is seemingly a done deal). That means that if Mbabu and Vini leave, as expected, we'll have three more squad places. One will be the attacker Marco mentioned we needed(Cherki for example). And then we'd have 2 more squad places left.

Benda doesn't give me confidence at all. I know he only played one hald vs Sevilla and a few games for our youth team, but he looked really shaky every time. I'd like us to sign a better number two. With Rodak, I had no doubt he'd do a good job if Leno was suspended/injured. With Benda not so much.

And then the final player, I'd get someone on loan. A defensive midfielder, or a left back, maybe a 5th centreback so we'd have more depth there. Or a versatile player that can cover multiple positions.
I can see us only buying one more player after Anderson and going with a 22-man squad, if you look at the players, we have signed recently so many can play in more than one position to a good enough standard and Marco has already stated that we are looking for a forward that can play across the line. This way it keeps our costs down and it also means that players can get more playing time. If I had a pick for one more player for us to sign, I would love Mitoma from Brighton.

Presumably Mitoma is the pipe dream, 0.000003% chance of happening and thats charitable though?
yes but so was Van Der Sar and Berbatov and who really thought Anderson would come back.

The PR team and the club will very much be fully aligned on every question asked to Berge and he'd be briefed on the questions he's getting and the answers he should be providing. Its one of the most orchestrated PR positions on things like this, so yes, they'd know. If there was even a smidge of suspicion that Andre was coming, there's no way they would present that interview like it had. If anything, its a nod to us that, this is our DM and the extremely heavily rumoured Andre is a no go now.

The odds of those playing joining us, at those times, wre probably small, but not Mitoma levels. That kid is either going to Man City, or a CL legacy club. He's that highly regarded.

Just a small correction, if we signed one more player after Andersen, that would be a 23-man squad(if Mbabu and Vini leave that is).

FFC1987

Yeh, I do agree with that Mick, no idea, I guess teams know hes now 27, with a contract running to 2027, so naturally, he's at the absolute premium for a transfer. Wait a year or so, get him at his peak but acknowledge no resale value and take a much smaller fee in a short while.

They can only move them on if someone wants them and are willing to pay the cost.

Of course, but you'd think someone would be interested in them. Mbabu has quite a lot of caps for Switzerland, lots of Bundesliga experience, while Vini played at some good clubs and has a pretty solid goalscoring record.

Rumour Mill and journos suggested the club wanted him signed up in time to be available for the Leicester game, which if the case gives us till tomorrow afternoon latest to announce him officially.

If he had his medical yesterday, he'll either be announced today or tomorrow.

with Mbabu and Vini, the Club does have the option to terminate their contracts my mutual consent , takes the wages off the book , we do take a hit with Vini's contract but frees up two squad places for Loans or younger players etc
If it wasn't for the medication I,d be chewing on your skin

It does take the wages off, but you are or could be settling part of the contract (maybe all of it), so you still take a hit

I know they aren't the same but if Berge is similar, it would be medical finishing this morning/yesterday, PR prep today and an announcement tomorrow morning so fingers crossed.

I think tidying up the wage bill would have a more significant impact for us than the losses on these two tiny transfers? Vini would be like 8m euros was it? over a contract since 2022, which included some loan fee's in there and Mbabu 3.5m euros in 2022, again with loan fee's, combined wages off the bill of roughly £80k a week for the two? Can;t imagine, even if they were fully released, there'd be much of a dent but I expect we'll get small amounts for them if they do go.

I don't think we should sell Benda. I think we should get another goalkeeper and let Benda be the third choice goalkeeper.

Can't see that happening. I'd suggest giving him some time, I'm sure they've done their research on him.

Incidentally, another keeper that was pretty dodgy for us is now going to be playing in the Champions League as number 1, Paulo Gazzaniga for Girona.

You may be right and he turns out to be a great goalkeeper, but I don't have high hopes for him unfortunately.

Who do you think will fill out the remaining two squad places then, providing Andersen is a done deal and we get an attacker Marco wanted too?

I also think there's a huge difference between Benda and Gazzaniga. Gazzaniga had some great performances at the highest level, including the Champions League, before he joined us. So he did at least play at a very high level before he joined us.
