Don't think it's us being a soft touch. We'd walk away if we didn't feel the deal was better than the alternative. Happens at every single club when a players contract runs out if they want to keep them. Other clubs offer and up to the current club to assess if it's worth going that high vs purchasing. When you break down the figures it will usually be cheaper to pay the higher salary for the equivalent quality.

Let's say we're paying him circa £100k a week so £5m a year for FFP.

Equivalent is a circa £12.5m player on circa £50k a week for FFP. Question is are we going to get as good or better RB for that amount? Probably get Milan Van Ewijk for around that mark. May possibly be better going forward (not guaranteed) but it is a huge risk defensively at prem level. Also a 5 year risk rather than 3.

If we want someone more proven than Van Ewijk going to cost way more and the club must have decided there really isn't anyone out there better defensively and/or we'd prefer to spend those extra funds elsewhere on the pitch. It's a lot to pay Tete but that is the position players get themselves into letting their contract run down. Essentially they get over paid but if it's cheaper for the club than buying in for the same quality it is what it is and the club is still better off.

Believe we offered Tosin £100k for the same reason. He's not worth that but with him refusing we are paying over double for Andersen with fee on top of salary for FFP.  Andersen is a better player in my eyes but not sure that much better to warrant double the FFP cost.

He said he wanted to stay so let's hope he frigging accepts now. Would be funny as so many Everton fans going on about it being nothing to do with the money and simply because he'd chosen the bigger club when Romano gave it the false here we go.

A big difference to factor into your financial model is with someone the age of Van Ewijk for example, assuming he extends that contract in 3-4 years we still have an asset worth £12.5m or £20m or whatever. If we keep Tete, the short/medium term expense is the same but after that, at 33-35 years old he walks for free or retires.

Player we were linked with last pre season apparently available on permanent deal is McAteer. Probably a few teams bigger than us interested but the type you would pay big money (as Max) would say for. Personally think he would suit our style and would solve that midfield conundrum we have. Forgot to mention he scores goals from midfield something we rarely saw last season.

Yeah defo if he's good enough and can offer enough for us not to have a significant weakness at RB vs what we've got now. The club must have decided he or someone like him is not good enough for that kind of money.

We all agree we need to go younger to fill new positions but when you've got possibly the best one on one defender in the league pretty much impossible to replace him for that kind of money so you can only assume that is what the club has thought and the reason they have offered the higher wage. Spending less at RB hopefully frees up funds to buy top quality youngsters in more attacking positions. Will see if the club actually do that but if it allows us to buy a 20 year old Fofana at left wing (who could significantly grow in value if he does well in the prem) whilst keeping us defensively as solid as we can be at the back I'm good with that.

hovewhite

Tete improved deal ,what is it an bigger money offer with an extra year?
Well it will see how committed he is to the club.
He stays a win win as long as injury he stays clear of and tim gets back fit

So think he keeps our defensive options solid if he stays and allows budget to be spent elsewhere on the squad.

By all accounts we had already offered him 3 years in line with what Everton had offered. You can only assume then purely down to salary and you'd imagine we have either matched Everton's salary offer or have gone closer to it but still slightly lower if we know his preference is to stay.

Yes agreed. For me, it's the same as the renewals for Jiminez and arguably Wilson. The cheaper short-term option is extending their contracts, rather than paying £10-20m for a younger replacement, but over 3-10 years it probably works out worse because they're assets with rapidly diminishing value. I'm pretty indifferent about all of them (including Tete) in isolation because I know we don't have the cash to rejuvenate the whole team in one window (and of course we don't need to, in fact it would probably unsettle us too much). I do however, as repeated ad nauseum, think we've allowed ourselves to rely on too many of these older players in the team, and whether it's Tete or other positions, we absolutely must make a big start on rectifying this now. Which as you say, buying "top quality youngsters" in other positions this summer would do. Let's see.

McAtee seems a great player, could be a good replacement for Andreas. Only concern is is his profile too similar to Josh King?

Agreed, absolutely brilliant little player- but I'd be really surprised if he cost less than £25m or so.

I've already said on this thread that Tete is avery good player, but am I right to be co concerned about his injury record?
Guy goes into the doctor's.

"How's that?"
"Don't you start"

It is a worry but the long absence this year wasn't a ligament or anything. It was an impact injury that could happen to anyone and isn't something that should reoccur to be fair. Obviously other injuries in previous years but was a shame he got that very strange collision injury as he was looking fitter than ever up to that point. Hopefully he stays fit but at least we have two very solid options if Tete stays should one get injured.

Could really use a third option however as a back up as if Timmy hadn't managed to play through injury we would have been absolutely stuffed. Got so many options at left back with Robinson, Sess, Cuenca, Bassey and Timmy! RB cant think of anyone tgat can do a job there after Tete and Timmy. BDR used to do it. If Zinchenko came in as a midfielder another LB option! Perhaps Sess with his wrong foot? Or perhaps we keep LDF as RB cover? Not sure what the answer is but still a big concern if one of Timmy/Tete does get injured for any period of time next season.

We have Luc DF unless he goes on loan, he is a RCB who used to play RB before we converted him. Then itd be on Tanton to step up. Imagine it'd be hard to get another RB who'd be any better than those who'd just sit on the bench hoping they get injured.

Drewry66

Yeah for me LDF. Not sure Tanton is up to it but who knows. The only problem is if we can get LDF to extend we really want a championship loan for him which he himself has said he wants a week ago I believe. Difficult one. Wish we had a midfielder like BDR who could do a decent job there.  Perhaps a champ loan with a recall clause in an emergency if we can negotiate that. I suspect Sess would have to give it a go if not.

Agree with this. We can also move to a back 5 and play Iwobi as a righ wingback(he played there in 1 or two games already last season) or Traore(he played there at Wolves sometimes). Maybe even Sessegnon can play as a right wingback too. If Tete stays, we absolutely do not need another rb, imo.

Drewry66

Iwobi is a good shout to be fair. Did well in that City away game dropping into a 5. It was a bit of a panic Jan of course but Marco/the club must have felt they had a solution with what we have as we didn't buy anyone in the end. Never got to know what that solution was of course as Timmy managed to fight through injury bless him.  They brought Tanton back but I don't remember him being on the bench so must have been using someone else if Timmy had gone off.

MickTheBeard

You might not agree to my view on transfers but we have got to find away to find good young players and sell them with friendly agents so they and us can have more money in the kitty with a younger squad if you keep an older squad next season you will have the Mexican, triore and perhaps the german goalkeeper need replacing and the rest of squad will be a year older and I'm afraid we haven't the staff at the club to do that and we must add silva how long will he stay.
