Summer Silly Season Transfer Thread 2025

As this thread as usual has merged into discussion and debate. Those that say for billion zillion pounds we would sell Muniz are forgetting we need three strikers at least who can be first choice. Our problem for the last few seasons is we really didn't have that. So another good striker is needed and we need to keep the ones we have.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

I agree. I just hope our CEO of the year has a similar view !

Exactly. If not and one gets injured we are stuffed. It's like people don't remember Raul having to play every minute because all we had was Vinicius on the bench and it stuffing the end of our season. Imagine we only had two and one was out for 6 months! Three top level strikers is essential and clearly what we are going for as per us saying Muniz is not for sale, renewing Rauls contract and clearly going for a new one on top.

It's also useful to see that the 3rd option can play wide if need be (which this guy can). Fully agree- the lack of backup to Raul did cost us at the end of the season.

Reading about Romulo he can
also play off a forward which is very useful and something we lacked a little last season.

Which clubs that use one striker (which is most now I suppose) have three similar level first choice strikers? Not many. Most have one or two and then a large pool of wingers/forwards who rotate and can play through the middle if needed. I don't see any club having three similar level no 9s, so think that perspective needs challenging. Bayern have one in Kane, Barca have one in Lewandowski, Madrid arguably have none or just one (considering what you consider Mbappe), City have one (Haaland), Liverpool one (Nunez), Arsenal have none.

I know I'm a bit of a broken record on this, and we could go in circles - but the above fleshes out my scepticism on being able to have 3. Now if Romulo is able to play on the wing then that's another story, I can't see much evidence of that on transfermarkt.

If Leipzig are considering Romulo as a replacement for Sesko then that suggests he is likely a very good player, as their success rate at being a pathway club for the very best is pretty well established. If we are competing with Leipzig it could be a hard sell.

I agree with this. This only makes sense if we sell Jimenez.

Decent winger TBF,
Can play both wings. Definitely worse options out there but obviously not fofana levels of excitement who I think might be tough to sign.

Would be a good signing, not as exciting as Fofana but still a very good player who's been capped for Brazil and is a regular for Porto with Champions League experience. Ability to take on a man and flair he would bring would be much needed in our squad. Only potential worry is resale value at 28 if we would spend 20m on him..

Yup
Younger than Willian as an option at least ha its likely to be a blend of this age and a couple younger you'd think. We have a good squad and a legit shot at Europe with a couple good signings who can contribute now, so IF such a transfer gets us over the line into Europe then the money we get in increased prize money somewhat mitigates the concern about sell on prices..especially if blended with a couple Romulo style signings

So if we sold Jiménez having bought Romolu and either one of Muniz/Romolu got injured for 6 months or Romolu turned out not to be good enough at this point what would we do? We'd be stuffed.

We had 3 last year and Vinicius just didn't play. Marco s always said we want 3. We were going to keep Stansfield as a 3rd and the same situation.

I suspect all 3 would play a part over the season in rotation. It does look from the reports I am reading this Romolu could play out wide as well and that is certainly a massive benefit to give more game time across the 3 so maybe they have looked at that and factored it in.

We should go all out to sign fofana. Tremendous resale value, so whilst a big fee is a risk I think we'd recoup it when we sell him

Romulo isn't the right profile for me. We should get another player who can play as a striker, but he needs to either be a) a very young player who wouldn't expect to play a lot, b) a player who can play on the wing too, so that he can get minutes that way too or c) both.

Romulo, while young, will probably expect to play a lot, maybe even be a starter. That doesn't make sense, as we already have Muniz and Raul who are similar in that regard. Romulo isn't really someone who can play on the wing either. That means that one of Muniz/Raul/Romulo would be out of the squad completely in a lot of games.

But then we don't have a ready made replacement for Raul next year. I'd completely agree if Raul was 25 or even 30 but at 34 we need to future plan for a new 9. Better for me doing that while Raul is still there in case he doesn't work out straight away and giving him time to adapt to the prem. If that ends up with Raul sitting on the sidelines for part of next year it means it's been a success for me. But agree to disagree on this one then bud.  ::smile::

This is the core of why it's pretty uncommon to have three strikers, it's like being the third goalkeeper or something like that. You're essentially not really needed that much. Even a second choice striker is a hard sell. As listed above most top clubs only have 1 no 9, very hard to find any who have two even - let alone three.

Would absolutely love him and suspect he's first choice but with the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool in for him prob beyond our reach. Sounds like we are trying however from reports.

Again agree to disagree mate. We needed Vinicius to play but he wasn't good enough. Be interesting to see what the club does if we get him. I suspect we will keep all 3 unless we do buy a winger who can play up front as well as we definitely need 3 options and something Marco definitely wants as said it in the past. If we did buy a winger who could play up front on top of Romolu I could see Raul being sold at that point.

I agree too.

Jiminez is one of our highest paid players, probably north of £100k pw. I cannot see a club like us having a 3rd choice at that level. The only way i can see the club justifying it is if someone is playing out of position, eg Romulo out wide (although seems unlikely because he's played 80% of games at CF) or Jiminez in the no 10, which I wouldn't mind seeing. Otherwise I can't see us having all 3 in the squad.

Quote from: General on June 27, 2025, 08:52:37 AMIn particular at this moment in time saying the club will/should sell Muniz (not everyone is saying this admittedly)..

Firstly muniz isn't in his prime, so those interested in cash money aren't thinking properly. You tend to keep assets that you know will appreciate in value over time.

If some say - let's sell him for £30m when we all acknowledge he could be worth £50m-£60m then you're basically selling yourself short or up s**t creek without a paddle.

Why would you knowingly miss out on an extra potential 100% of upside, when all you need to do is be patient.

It's very short term and unhealthy thinking.. kinda desperate. Which the club aren't.

Patrick Roberts and Sessegnon had the potential to be £50-60m players but we were right to sell them for less because they never achieved it. The statement "all you need to do is be patient" is untrue.
