Summer Silly Season Transfer Thread 2025

I have a question about our AFCON bound players (and any we may acquire).
If memory serves, they could be out for as much as a month, maybe 5-6 games.  Ouch!

My question is - - Is one month a lock?  Or could their time away be less should their team(s) be eliminated early on?  Just curious how much to expect away from FFC.

Sidebar - - This is why I really don't like all this International play.  These competitions should be played when there is little or no conflict with club play.  It really is a shame, all these players know which side of their bread is buttered.  Not only time away from club play (their money-maker) but also injury risks.

Just another simple comment regards 'silly' transfer season.  Still not impressed with Taremi, Zinchenko, Sterling, Nelson efforts.  Does not really inspire.  JMHO

Going for players in big clubs to me seems madness leaving it late hopefully might lead to a reduction in price if it is a no go time is running out and might be too late to find alternatives. We can all sit in america saying me and my father love silva and talbot cycling from arsenal to Chelsea ground how about going to the Syrian or  Gaza bargains to be had does Margate ring a bell.

Quote from: hopper on July 31, 2025, 11:28:23 AMIt really is called silly season for good reason 😅

I envy those who are good at keeping out of it and just waiting til deals done are announced.

I seriously want to just sack off coming on here and X as just like frigging Chinese water torture and a complete waste of time.

Never going to happen however. Like the frigging itch that you know you shouldn't scratch but just can't help it.  ::cry::
It's like an addiction... self inflicted but nothing you can do about it 😱😱
Then as soon as we sign someone, it all starts again... people arguing the new player is excellent/rubbish... too old/ too young ... can't play on LW/ CM... cost too much / too cheap, must be crap ... ex team sorry to see him go/ couldn't wait to get rid...
..and we get to 200 pages with little gained  :slap:

I press refresh on Fulham Fan News multiple times a day for nearly two months without anything actually happening and I sit there seriously questioning my life choices.

 :slap:

I do the same and I question nothing!   ::cry::

Tbf to our recruitment team, generally the most exciting players (aka Fofana this window) tend to be courted by bigger clubs. So often our only chance is to wait it out and see how the market reacts, unless we actually sign them before they get this good (which is incredibly hard but not impossible). That is, if we are going for the Hot Stuff of the summer

Otherwise we risk ending up like Everton:failing to tap up players sufficiently and ending up spending time and resources barking up the wrong trees.

The AFCON 2026 is from January 13th to February 11th with Nigeria playing on the 14th, 18th and 22nd of January. They are ina group with Rwanda, Lesotho and South Africa. They will get through to the next round. Bassey and Iwobi will be gone as players are expected to be released around December 30, 2025. However, the exact release date can vary based on club agreements and individual circumstances so there is chance they play vs Liverpool on the 3rd but poissible they are finished after Palace and not back for 6 weeks.
Quark, strangeness and charm

Strange how a promoted side like Sunderland, seem to be getting every Tom Dick and Harry through the door, another one today.
And we are struggling to get anyone.

Would you prefer all the players that Sunderland have signed or those that we will sign.  You've answered your own question.

Defo our targets are a lot higher. Also their strategy seems to be to ask a club how much they want and then simply just go okay then, here's the money. You can understand as a promoted side desperate to sort their squad early with huge upheavals required to try and stay in the prem but not really sustainable as an approach unless you are a massive club. Most mid table clubs have to negotiate the hell out of deals and amongst going for bigger targets a reason most are struggling at this point.

I'm pretty sure you've got the wrong tournament.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_Africa_Cup_of_Nations

https://www.cafonline.com/caf-africa-cup-of-nations/schedule-results/

AFCON is December 20, 2025 - January 18, 2026

Nigeria's group matches are December 23rd, 27th and 30th in a group with Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania.

My assumption is they would be released after the Burnley match on Dec 13th and not play against Forest on the 20th. If we are in the League Cup quarterfinals which would be on Dec 16th or 17th they could possibly stay for that. Earliest they could be back is Jan 3rd for the Liverpool match if they get eliminated in the groups(not happening) and the latest would be against Brighton on Jan 24th.

Fair chance they miss all of Forest, West Ham, Palace, Liverpool, Chelsea and Leeds plus the FA Cup 3rd round match and the first leg of the League Cup semifinals should we happen to be in that as I would expect Nigeria to make at least the semis and thus the 3rd place game on Jan 17th.

As few as 3 missed matches but up to 8 with the higher end being more likely.

How do you know their signings aren't good.
From all the rumours of our so called signings, they're not that good to get excited about.

I guarantee you he is not one bit arsed about us, and Tottenham are in the Champions League. We don't stack up.

Almost like they've signed 20 players who wouldn't get on our bench.

I remember people crying about all the players Ipswich signed too.

Even better question, would you prefer to have Sunderland's current squad or our current squad.? For all their signings, we still have a much better squad than them.
