I don't disagree but I can't think of an outstanding alternative which, actually, is a large part of our problem.

Chelsea have apparently made an approach for Butland. I thought he wanted to be a No. 1 GK & not a bench warmer.

QuoteArsenal boss Arsene Wenger is pushing to sign a new striker this week.

Wenger has admitted he will try to sign a new striker before the transfer window shuts.

He said: "Quality-wise, no. But number-wise we are maybe a bit short.

"It will not be easy, though, because you do not find strikers who are good enough to play for us on the street."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has ruled out signing Barcelona striker David Villa.

The Spain striker has been linked with the Gunners since the transfer window opened but Barcelona have consistently said they will not sell the striker.

Wenger said: "Barcelona don't want to sell, they've made that clear. I said they don't want to sell, I didn't say he was a target."

There have been no new arrivals at the Emirates this month despite Arsenal's position outside the top four and the departures of Marouane Chamakh and Johan Djourou.

Wenger said: "We are still trying, but it's hard to sign players in January who can improve you."

QuoteFulham are eyeing Brest striker Jonathan Ayite.

The People says the Cottagers have also made an enquiry about 27-year-old Brest striker Ayite.

He was born in France but plays for Togo and scored his country's goal in their 2-1 Africa Cup of Nations loss to the Ivory Coast.

To be fair we don't know how derisory, or indeed generous, our contract offer has been.

Apparently, it's generous. I don't think this is a case of Hangeland playing silly buggers with us, I'd bet a large sum that it's his agent.

I can't imagine Brede being a money grabber and I also cant see us giving into his agents excessive demands.... especially based on this seasons form.

The grapevine I have read reckons it's not very generous. Thing is, there's no denying a) he's been poor this season and b) the age situation still hasn't been resolved. In light of those, I'm not sure I'd bother being overly generous

All the rumours and talk I am hearing suggests that we are solely looking at strikers, whilst this may be us doing a good job keeping things quiet, why am I not reading/ hearing anything abouyt defenders? We lost Kelly and our CBs are not doing an adequate job. Worrying.

Okore is a defender. Manolev is a defender....

Malanda is a defensive midfielder.

As far as I have seen its gone pretty quiet on them, the only other being Boateng.

Barra Boy on TIFF reporting that we, amongst others (there's the rub), are said to be in talks with Aly Cissokho, 25 year old left back at Valencia. He joined them from Lyon for £12m after being there for three years. IF true it certainly shows some ambition, and funds available.

God The Mechanic

Simon Peach has said that he should have some good news for FFC fans later. Teasing swine...

Would love that, but really really hard to imagine we could be in for the likes of him.

We didn't hear anything at all about Frimpong before it was announced.  You can't put too much stock on the rumors that you hear, especially regarding this current FFC management team which plays things very close to the vest.

Re. Cissokho, it's a bit unnerving that Valencia would be considering selling him just a few months after they brought him in to replace Jordi Alba, although maybe Valverde just doesn't like him as much as Pellegrino did.  For what it's worth, the accounts I'm seeing say they paid €6m for him, and not the £12m mentioned upthread, so maybe they just want to stick with Mathieu and turn a quick profit on Cissokho.  (Would he even be eligible to come play for Fulham right away?  He played a couple of league matches for Lyon at the start of the year, so wouldn't he be barred by the three club rule?)

Hard to imagine they'd be willing to let Cissokho go as you say but you never know with these things. The emergence of Juan Bernat might be a reason they'd be open to it. He looks an extremely talented player.

Is that official?

God, I hope so. The last time I wanted someone OUT of the Premier League this badly it was Christian Ronaldo. I haven't missed his presence for even a second since, and I know I'll feel no loss when Balotelli is some other league's problem.
