Surely as the squad currently stands there's a good chance Reed is first choice alongside Lukic with Cairney off the bench?

I was wondering the same thing...

He's 29, seems to be moving further away from being a first choice, and it feels like he'd be perfect for one of the promoted teams (including back to Southampton).

I hope he stays, but I do wonder if we're going to have a job on our hands keeping him if we bring in two new CMs...

Squad player I think for us now - excellent servant for the club. What you need in the squad, especially when protecting leads for a sub.

Everton and Wolves have long admired him though, so expect another late bid for the Reedy.

Reed also cost only £6m when we signed him so I imagine with his new contract he is someone we could expect to do well on financially without losing someone vital to the way we play - Robinson, Pereira etc.

Quote from: bencher on August 07, 2024, 04:33:10 PMJudging by the paucity of posts on here in the last day or two, it's either the calm before the storm (of incoming signings), or we've basically packed up for now and will get back to it on deadline day.
Well to me this just confirms that McTominay and, obviously, André were our main priorities but since both negotiations has stalled, its only natural for things to go quiet.

I reckon we will play the waiting game on those two. And if we are still in for Chalobah, I can deffo see us waiting out Chelsea who doesnt seem to be too tough to negotiate with considering the players they are selling

If its true what the ITK member on here says about us not going to spend more than 60 mil on the rest of our signings, it makes sense for us to bargain pretty hard here since 20 mil per signing is the absolute minimum to get quality players.

Think this is spot on. These 3 are in all likelihood are our main targets. All 3 clubs are desperate to sell and with all 3 we think we can get them for way less closer to the end of the window if we play chicken. I reckon we'll spend more than £60 million but every penny counts when looking at FFP as amortised fees as with us for 5 years so the lower the better. I think we feel we can start the season with what we have and squeeze ever penny out of these deals with the position the selling clubs are in. Frustrating as hell but the more I think about it the more it makes sense. Sure we are prepared but if these 3 go wrong for any reason hope we are well lined up end of the window just in case as defo short at the mo in these positions.
I think its a good decision to wait as well as there seems to be not too much interest revolving around our targets. Im guessing this has to do with what someone on here wrote earlier: this summer is clearly divided into those who can spend and those who cant (and need to sell before they spend). We can spend, so if we need to act fast with a transfer we can.

Previously our strategy of waiting results in other clubs going in for our targets, but thankfully so far that doesnt seem to be the case.

Quote from: I Ronic on August 07, 2024, 11:26:49 PMI know he's only played one friendly but Cuenca looks to be the player other teams seem to have missed. So well spotted by the scouting team. Like Iwobe, Castagne and Traore were.
The Smith Rowe signing is something completely different. Persuading a recognised talent to step down to a smaller club with no European Football and a perceived mid table finish and at the price, remarkable.
Andre's club need the money but don't want to lose him as they're winning. Nobody else seems interested. Same with McTominay. We seem to be playing a waiting game, who will blink first. Have our recruitment team stepped up, turned a corner and are finding that balance between tough negotiations and landing the targets Marco and his team want?

How are established prem players like Traore, Iwobi and Castagne "well spotted" by our scouting team? Their qualities were already well known long before they signed for us

You're right they were established Prem players but we got them at relatively good prices. So more astute buys. We've come along way since the days of Mitroglou and Felix.

I still think Reed will get games. I dont think you can mash everyone of our midfielders togheter and say that Reed is 5th choice. Who will play will very much depend on who we are playing against, and generally speaking I think Reeds qualities are better suited to the roles Marcos uses in midfield as opposed to TC qualities.

And even if Reed is being pushed away through sheer competion, well thats just a healthy sign that the club is progressing nicely.

At the end of the day, these things tend to naturally sort themselves out. If we break into the top half of the table, then maybe Reed finds that being a rotation option at a club like that is a perfectly good fit for him. Especially considering that he has been here for quite some time now

Wherever that balance currently sits, it clearly needs to be recalibrated. With a wealthy chairman, new stand, top class manager, core of a good team and ample FFP headroom, our negotiating team's terrible execution of transfer strategy appears to be the one thing holding us back at this point. We remain far more effective at getting players out the door than getting them in, having offloaded our best player in good time, but facing suggestions above that we can replace him by playing Bassey out of position in DM when the season starts next week. Any news on how we're going to replace Mitrovic yet?

I think MS and the recruitment team are doing much better than we did under Kline and the stats system for example. Both Mitro and JP wanted out, and in the case of Mitro the current squad (Muniz) has stepped up so it makes sense to strengthen the squad where it is needed. I am not nearly as gloomy on our policy vs. years passed and it's hard to be so harsh given FFP and the fact the window is still open.

Correct, I started the thread and wrote a whole opening piece about it haha

But doesn't mean ya can't still say when a rumour is completely unsubstantiated and probably not worth going too far into in comparison to others :slap:

Isn't he the kind of player we should be looking at, knows the English game inside out so a relatively short time to adjust, surely Burnley would be open to a sale.

Yeah I'd have Sander Berge definitely, was thinking this the other day. Saw him linked with United and don't think he will be at Sheffield United next season

Although not for the reason he 'knows the English game' as this could be said for any 34 year old with 500 appearances in league 2..

Well he is not 34 he is 26 and he knows the English game which is a huge advantage and crucial, and in both Fulhams and the players best interest.

Point was lost but if the best thing you can say about a potential signing is they 'know the English game' then it says a lot about them as a player ..

It certainly does and it is a massive plus, and in general it adds to their credibility as they will be mentally strong and use their upper body strength and punch their weight, because they know what to expect physically wise because it is in our culture.

Not run away home sick.

You sound as though you don't know much about that.

Nevertheless you seem to be  gradually learning but still a little slow for comfort.

Teamtalk:

As per the latest reports in the English press, Burnley are aware of Man Utd's interest in Berge and have set his price tag at £30m.

A deal at that price would see Burnley make a significant profit on the Norwegian as they only spent £12m to sign him from Sheffield United last summer.

Man Utd are also planning to offer Berge a contract worth £100,000 a week as they try to finalise his signing.

That's a crazy price for Berge. He's worth the third of that. I personaly think he's one of the most overrated player that played in the PL in recent years. Everytime I've watched him, he was below average. He does make 1 or 2 "highlight plays" every game but he's a passenger for the rest of the game. I guess that's why his highlights always look like he's a world beater, when ij reality, I think he's a pretty poor footballer. I'd steer clear of him...

It's Man Utd, everyone knows you can mark up the price and they'll pay it. See Maguire for £85m, Antony for £80m, Fred for £50m, and Mount for £50m with 12 months remaining. Also, signing Casemiro for £65m and paying him £300k+ per week on a long term contract when he was already 30. No one else would pay these prices.

It's all so quiet. Matip not happening. Andre, McTominay and Costa?

The recruiting these days is far better under the days of Magath who was one of the worst managers this club has ever had...

I wonder what he is doing today... putting cheese on his aching ageing body?  ::scarf::  :slap:  :guitar-playHDs:

United really want to spend £30m on Berge when they've got McTominay who's arguably better? Probably good news for us because it will mean they'll have to sell quicker and might even drop the price for McTominay further.

Bowie to Hibs confirmed. Good luck to him, hope he proves himself as others have elsewhere, in reality there wasn't a pathway to the first team here any time soon, so for him it's best to move on. Wish him well in bonnie Scotland.

Mc tominey is a far better player than Berge who is anonymous against us whenever he's been on the pitch.rhink again it's this FFP that making them consider moving him on,it amazes me and I can understand the player staying especially as the manager under pressure after we go there and win in August.

Deeping_white

If we do want Fab back, I'm assuming we'll pay 20% less than other clubs since it'll negate our 20% sell on fee (I.E. Liverpool wanting £25m means we'd pay £20m). I think in that scenario we'd likely cash in on Stansfield as an academy player meaning he's pure profit, and likely nibble at anything over £25m for Pereira. The basis for my logic is that Marco has so far hinted at ESR being a #10 as his primary position, and Fabio is a player of a similar profile, meaning we'd have two #10's in the role he utilised in our championship winning season who could both play wide left if needed. The sale of Pereira means you can then afford to buy both Andre and McTominay and we'd then likely have budget available for a cheaper utility forward in the mould of Bruun Larsen at circa €7m, so our CM options would be TC, Reed, Lukic, Andre* & McTominay* (*or other CM's we could buy as examples) with ESR and Fab as #10's with TC able to play there too + Iwobi. That then means a new LW, ESR, Fab, Iwobi can cover LW with Wilson, Iwobi, Traore covering RW.
