Probably explains why we've sat back and waited on the Andre front because they're going to have to drop the price

"Fluminense has been paying salaries with great difficulty, the club is going through financial difficulties at the moment"

Doesn't sound great for them and it might explain why they're so desperate for a large chunk of the transfer fee upfront.

I expect we'll all find an agreement soon enough.

A concern though is that Fluminense may have put themselves in such a hole that they need the extra 5m, which may be why they've been so stubborn, will they change if they don't get it and desperately need it?

Is there anyone else at Fluminense we could buy for an extra 5m?

Alternatively, with them being in such a hole on the pitch until recently too, perhaps they're trying to get up the ladder a bit more to give them a good platform and embed the new DM before letting him go.

They've not got a bidding war for him going despite all the press on it, so it doesn't seem like they'll get much more than we've offered as things stand.

@jolslover

I think Carvalho is a good player, not sure for 20m he would be a good signing though. He has only started a handful (literally like 4-5) games in his career on either wing so is basically a number 10. We already have Pereira doing this role and judging by the Sevilla game maybe Silva sees this as ESRs best position (Arsenal fans I know say he plays best in the ten) We also have Iwobi here. We are already packed in this area so although I really rate Carvalho and he would be a good signing for a mid table prem club I am not sure we need him

Is this not the opposite of the Robinson transfer, where apparently we didn't have to give Wigan a fee but did so anyway as a gesture of goodwill?
In this case, an historic Brazilian club is in financial difficulty, so we're bending over backwards to exploit that and screw them out of their best player at a discounted price (substantially below the amount we agreed last year, by some accounts).
Interesting.

I get what you're saying and in many ways you're right..

I think it's slightly different though. the sums are firstly significantly different. Robinson's value was £5m? I think at the time and we didn't have to pay anything and we paid 50%, or £2.5m.

at £20-25m this would be fluminense's highest ever received transfer sum for a player who's probably valued, at most, at that, and they're trying to grab more money, despite no other clubs being in for him and them needing the money.

Wigan also didn't have many assets to sell and had gone through a process of everyone knowing they're bankrupt, whereas Fluminense are apparently paying a lot of old stars high wages (Thiago Silva and Marcelo) and have been at the top end of the Brazilian and South American footballing pyramid, so there's quite a lot they can still do to manage their books, which doesn't include us footing the bill.

Quote from: Angus Telford on August 08, 2024, 05:17:12 PMWe seem to be building up a bit of form for it.

We signed Solomon a loan instead of transfer essentially to screw Shakhtar out of a fee.

Not sure we can complain about Liverpool "stealing" Elliott/Carvalho or Bayern looking for a discount on the Palhinha fee.

Again, get what you're saying and perhaps true. I'd challenge what's happened re Shakhtar, purely for the unique circumstances and how it played out long term... it's very rarely you're in negotiations with teams who are in countries going through a war and with FIFA guidelines that allowed for players to be signed against the usual rules. We also didn't permanently sign Solomon, so they didn't fundamentally lose out on getting a fee for the player, and have since sold him to Spurs, so we didn't get any long term benefit.

The Andre and Robinson discussions are around fees for buying players permanently.

At last if true. I have been saying this for months. Bring Fabio home. No brainer.

Wasn't that outstanding at Hull, no thanks.

Just to add, spurs didn't pay for Solomon and it was only a week or 2 ago that shakhtar went public about the offer they rejected which they received off spurs

So far levy has offered them a grand total of 10% sell of fee, which shakhtar promtly rejected and are asking for 20 or 30% sell on fee, no fee been paid yet, no fee agreed to be paid but yet the player is a spurs man.

Obviously can't say for sure but I'd speculate that if manor was to sign for us permanently then we'd have been a little more gracious to the Ukrainian side.

9 goals and 2 assists in 20 appearances for a mid-table team he joined mid season is quite impressive is it not?

I live in hull and not many of the fans warmed to him.

After January they dropped down the table a little and missed the play offs, he didn't do badly and the stats say he did quite well, maybe the overall disappointment of the second half of the season meant he missed the applause.

Some lovely finishes. He's a proper livewire

Where would Fabio fit in currently? Pereira ESB both play the 10 role as does Carvalho? So if say Pereira was sold does he get in front of ESB? Plus there's no Mitrovic now to work off and with all respect to Muniz he is not what I would call a target centre forward.

Quote from: Craven Mad on August 08, 2024, 03:18:39 PMFor the right price, Fab is a no-brainer for me.

Put your pride aside, and he's a player who:

- could fill-in on the left of our attacking three;
- has successfully worked with us/Marco previously;
- would effectively come at a 20% discount (due to the sell-on clause we hold);
- is still only 21 and counts as homegrown; and
- has a lot of upside potential.

A three of Fab/ESR/Iwobi behind Muniz would offer a high work rate and fluid goal scoring threat.

I see what you're saying but at least one of the points is mute.

Fabio left us for a free to Liverpool, it's important to remember that - he chose to leave when his contract ran out so we got nothing. Getting 20% off may seem good, but if they try selling Fabio to us for £20m, then they're still making a £16m profit off us, for a player they got for free and have done nothing with since. I don't think he's worth that much given how little he's played since he joined them. He shows glimpses for them on their preseason tours, but rarely has featured in the seasons.

It is important to remember something that is completely wrong.

Well if they want £20m for him and we get 20% off and they also paid us £5m in compensation, so the real cost is £11m which isn't the end of the world. It still leaves a bitter taste but we are getting a hell of a player and for that price we will struggle to find an alternative.

The rules need to change around young players, I blame Liverpool and I also don't blame Liverpool

I agree with what you are saying but it's actually even less. We were paid c. £7m in comp so if the transfer were £20 then the net cost would be just £9m rather than £11m.

I had assumed that having lost Willian, ESR is his replacement and will be playing off the left.

Turkish side fernablanca now interested in Andre

Sess coming back makes sense as cover and cost nothing. Fabio coming back is too expensive and frankly is not really needed. He clearly has talent and would have done very well if he had stayed. But we simply don't need him as cover.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

Even better then. And in fact if you think about it, it's even better than that from a financial perspective anyway. If Andreas leaves we will probably get about £25m to £35m for him, that leaves us with a nice net profit between Andreas leaving and Fabio coning in

Agree though weirdly he apparently played CF for Hull mostly to great success... Still, cant see this happening personally
