Quote from: LRCN on August 19, 2024, 11:07:39 PMBerge is fine I think and compliments lukic or reed well. Not sure what it means for our midfield though- ap at 10? Or replacement?

I would suspect he'll play the deeper role for now with AP or Lukic at CM. Purely because of his size and physicality (and experience there)

I know people are saying he's an 8 but in his career he's played

1 game at CB
2 games at CAM
97 games at CM
167 games at CDM

So he's had plenty experience in DM albeit he's played the 8 much more recently for Burnley and a split amount at Sheffield. At Genk he was an out and out DM so will be interesting to hear Marcos comments if he passes his medical and it all gets tied up, that'll be our first indication of where he seems him I guess.

I don't think we can play Andreas with Berge if Andreas is an 8. Berge and Lukic or Berge and Reed are only options, in my opinion. Berge isn't good enough defensively to play in a double pivot with Andreas, I'm not sure Lukic or Reed can play with him in that role and they are better defensively than Berge.

Quote from: Angus Telford on August 19, 2024, 11:32:38 PMHe might play in the 6/DM position but that doesn't mean he's a DM so to speak. His tackle rate is about half that of Palhinha/Souza and instead he shines in possession. Although I certainly don't think we'd sign both him and Andre, that deal is 100% dead if this goes ahead.

Same could be said for Andre too though right? In fact from what I can see Sander Berges tackles per 90 are slightly higher than Andres and one would think physique wise Berge is far more a traditional frame for a DM.

End of the day Palhinhas tackle rate was almost certainly not going to be replaced directly given he is more or less the highest in Europe. Souza might be compatible but by all accounts not good on the ball,  So we're not looking to replace Joaos stats in the department like for like as there's very few like him.

It does appear on paper that we won't sign Andre but then who knows. We all though Scott was to compliment Andre not long ago, now we're not sure if it's one or the other. None of us know for sure so we'll just have to wait and find out. Perhaps there's room in the tank for another cheeky bid especially if Fluminese get knocked out the cup tomorrow - in that case though one would imagine we absolutely would see one of Lukic or Reed moved on.

Berge at 6 is not good. He's an OK passer, decent tackler but u want him to progress the ball up the pitch through carries and press up, needs a disciplined player beside him. As with mctom struggling to see where he fits neatly other than with lukic

Looks like a double pivot situation might be on the cards. Who knows, no point trying to work it out either as we'll find out soon enough ha.

https://x.com/FulhamTransfer/status/1825618539514048657

Could work incredibly well with Lukic

I only read the fulham transfer link, but didn't leave me convinced.

I'll be honest, everyone seems very excited about Berge.. I'm aware of him, but don't really know him as a player..

Part of me wonders, if he's played for two teams that have been relegated, can he really be that good? Initial impression is no. Though I haven't been paying attention.

Secondly, paying £20m for him, seems like a decent amount.. wondering where things may have fallen short re signing Andre and Mctominay and if it's budget related, or if we're spreading budget more wisely across three positions, which going for Berge has allowed..

Does this expose our fundamental limitations? I know it sounds dramatic, but wondering if going £7m less for a 24 Yr old Brazilian international shows fulham to have a quite significant financial ceiling. I appreciate people may say of course, given our size/revenue etc we would.. but seeing how other clubs are spending....?

Happy to go with the concensus on this, though admit it feels like a third option after andré and Mctominay, which doesn't strike me as ambitious, necessarily, or what we/Marco really wants...

Worried we're back to Al Fayed eras of competing constantly for mid table...

Given the dross previous managers have served up, I would have cut my arm off for consistent mid-table PL football every season. Also, I don't think we weren't able to afford the fee for Andre but if reports were correct then it looks like Fluminense were ******* us around and out of spite I probably would just pull out of that too.

Reasonable musings but he's been a very good player in poor teams surrounded by much poorer players IMO, indeed voted Burnleys best last year (albeot it one could say slim pickings). And we have been interested in Berge for a couple of years now so certainly a player the club and marco have agreed on for multiple windows now, so not so far down our list by any margin presumably, especially given even Utd were looking at him so clearly has pedigree. 46 caps for his country as well as youth caps at every level.

I don't know that I'm necessarily out of this world "excited" per see, he's less flashy sounding on paper than a young Brazilian coming in which always sounds exciting, but he's much lower risk certainly as proven here. So I am definitely cautiously optimistic and think especially with better players around him he can be a step up on what he have currently.

I'm assuming that's our business done at DM/CM only based off of what Silva said last week - but only time will tell I guess, would love one last cheeky Andre move but perhaps we're best using that money elsewhere and only pushing if there's enough in the kitty after a CB and attacker are settled.

One report even suggested their counter offer was £35m, that's pretty wild for a DM from brazil from a side in the relegation zone in financial difficulties with only 2 years on his contract. Big risk on that one.

This could be 10-15m cheaper than that deal, a significant amount of money for a club our size

Have to be honest, looked at his transfrmarkt page, saw his stats, the teams he's played against, and time time he's spent in each league, and feel this is us selling ourselves short in a key position. We've sold a player for £50m, who cost us £25m?, and who had previously won one of the big 5 leagues in europe and played champions league football and became one of the top DM's in europe, for a player who's hardly done anything beyond the championship of note.

I appreciate that's harsh, but the two times he's played in the PL the teams he's played in have been relegated, whilst he's meant to have played the DM role, shielding the back four.

I'm not convinced he has the ability or pace to compete at a PL level and feel he may be a squad player long term at best, which for £20m, isn't what we should be looking for.. Perhaps the Man Utd links were agent talk to get us to pay up..

He's unproven and 26 years old. Obviously if marco believes in him then I trust Marco,.. sometimes though I wish we'd just be able to sign the likes of Andre.

Interestingly for me at least, those years we got promoted under Slavisa and Parker and then relegated, really did make a huge difference to our ability to compete as FFP/PSR rules have come in since then... we wouldn't have had any issues back then signing Andre, McTominay, Andersen etc back then and building... frustrating, as it was clear the ownership and transfer team under TK were finding their feet and making mistakes with hires, whether they were players (our defence under Slavisa), or our Manager in Parker (Anguissa, Lookman, Andersen, Areola etc)..

Bit deflated by this news and Berge being our next signing tbh..

His stats seem average at best and largely untested in any good way..

Hope I'm proven wrong..

Here's a Thread on Sander Berge from April on the Burnley forums for you or anyone interested in their thoughts on him
He's universally rated...not a single voice against him..

"An absolute rolls Royce of a footballer. If we keep him for next season it's probably the only way we would walk the league. Hes magnificent"

"Would almost feel sorry for the lad playing in the championship again next season. But certainly won't complain if he is. Far too good."

"at the age he's at and after his performances in the Premier League this season.
Fulham, Brighton, Wolves and West Ham should all be looking at him."

"He's the best we've had since Defour,"

"Berge is absolute class. Think he's massively underrated - I also thought he was average when he was at Sheffield. Now I realise he's a classy modern day centre midfielder."

"time for him to go to a team that plays in Europe before it passes him by"

This could be 10-15m cheaper than that, a significant amount of money.

We're just about to potentially spend £20m + add-ons for a midfielder who's played two seasons in the premiership, getting relegated both times, and spent most of his time in the Championship.... and is two years older...

We could buy a Brazil international, a player who's 2 years younger at 24, and a DM champion not only of brazil, but the latin/south american equivalent of a champions league winner.. and a key player for them for 10m EUROS+ more.. (that's less in £)..

I've watched a fair few videos and feel Andre's got enough about him to be the solution we need. Berge is semi proven in English football to not be effective enough.. I appreciate that's a harsh comparison and I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong.

I feel Marco wanted Andre or McTominay and we've cheaped out on him.. perhaps for legitimate reasons, but why not get Diego Carlos in for £10m and not Andersen in for supposed £20-£25m and use the difference for McTominay or Andre..

Carlos is proven at this level and so is McTominay - the maths would seem to be the same.

It seems like a big and slightly careless risk for such an important position, especially given how we play.

I'd rather Carlos and McTominay/Andre over Andersen and Berge.. Almost seems like a no brainer, especially given the fact you could sign Carlos on a three year deal and amortise other transfer fees and he could do a good job, and we could still find a better RCB in the next few windows.

This analysis on him is pretty good:

It says he played as a 6 last year but he didn't. Played 30 games CM and 7 DM. He's defo a double pivot signing.

Cairney is still playing for a team that's in the PL, and which have been mid table since.. Ream did so too, and became a very good player in one of his last seasons with us, earning the praise of the best manager in the league and winning pundits and fans over for his dominant performances.. Mitro absolutely dominated the Championship, broke scoring records, dominated VVD, scored goals and then had a weird season under parker, and still got sold on for £40-£50m+... They, in my mind, don't really compare... they also both got promoted and relegated with the same club.. Berge moved clubs and got relegated with both..

What plaudits has Berge got for his displays in the PL?, why has he got relegated with not one, but two clubs?

I'm playing devils advocate, and mainly because I feel DM/CM, especially if we're to only get one in and are still unsure of what's happening with RCB and someone across the front line, is such a key and pivotal role for us to get right given how we play.

They're complimenting him on a thread when Burnley beat Berge's old team Sheffield Utd, who got relegated, 4-1..

That's hardly a ringing endorsement given both clubs got relegated and hardly won a match all season in the PL.

Quote from: General on August 20, 2024, 12:37:33 AMHave to be honest, looked at his transfrmarkt page, saw his stats, the teams he's played against, and time time he's spent in each league, and feel this is us selling ourselves short in a key position. We've sold a player for £50m, who had previously played champions league football and became one of the top DM's in europe, for a player who's hardly done anything beyond the championship of note.

Perhaps take a look at what the people who watch him week in and week out are saying rather than empty stats and who he's played for so far. Doesnt really tell the full picture

They're complimenting him on a thread when Burnley beat Berge's old team Sheffield Utd, who got relegated, 4-1..

That's hardly a ringing endorsement given both clubs got relegated and hardly won a match all season in the PL.

Ream got relegated twice from the premier league and hardly played a game but hasn't actually been anything  but great in the three last three years since so what's your point

I was merely answering your initial question, good players can be relegated and more than once too. Mitrovic went three times in total with two different clubs.

And he has spent longer in the Premier League than he has the Championship too.

I am not going to argue with you, I have learnt that it is pretty pointless most of the time because the goalposts always move, but I thought I would highlight those particular points.

I have no issue with him coming to our club but as usual every transfer is a risk and ultimately we won't know if it will work until he is here. Is Silva wants him i though then at this point, I am happy with that.
