I feel like not bringing in a starting centre forward is going to be a mistake. Got to hope Muniz becomes more consistent, or we can get through until January.

Quote from: hopper on August 29, 2024, 12:04:47 AMOne gripe I have with our recruitment is that we don't bring in players as an understudy who could succeed a player like Joao while they're still here, or even before selling.

This is a really good point and highlights serious flaws in our recruitment ever since the khans came in. Silva also has a challenge in that he doesn't seem to give mins to young players really

Not so easy to do when we were newly promoted as the onus is to strengthen the starting XI in order to stay up rather than find players to understudy the ones you already have.

With the experienced players who have departed this summer, it doesn't surprise me that Marco has looked to the likes of Berge and Andersen. These are not players whose performance levels are likely to decline within a year or two; their ability and their experience should serve the starting XI well for a few seasons at least. And their presence will, in my opinion, make it easier to now introduce younger players without sliding down the table. I expect next summer will see us targeting more younger players and fewer, if any, who are already at their peak. If so, then it would be seen that our strategy to reduce the average age of the playing squad is actually a sensible two-year plan. That's my guess.

I think that's an overly simple way of looking at it and mid - long term is bad for our finances and bad for our chances of staying up. I'm also talking about generally over the last decade, not just the last 2 years

If anything is overly simple, it's your reply. You neither say why you think my reply to be overly simple nor why my guess as to our strategy across this summer and next is bad for both our finances and our chances of staying up.

I don't wish to quibble with you as to how much better the Club might have done in the early years of our Chairman's ownership, but the fact is, in three of the past seven summers, we've gone into the transfer market as a newly promoted club in the P.L. I made a guess as to what the Club might already be planning for next summer because the present and future matter more than the past. In the absence of any explanation as to why my conjectures are too simplistic and financially unsound and increase the likelihood of our being relegated, I reject these assertions entirely.

Brother this is a message board not a uni dissertation

My point is super simple actually which is it's very expensive to keep paying for players who are in their prime or beyond it. As you cannot generate profit and you are paying for someone at say peak years. Harder to find an edge in thr market there. The palace, Brighton models are a contrast. Look at the profit newcastle flipped on minteh. We don't go in to undervalued markets like nordics belgium SA etc and buy / nurture young players which can pad out the squad. We also have a bit of margin to the worse teams in the league such that we can risk a short term performance dip. An example might be Lukic - spending 10 or 15m on him at 27 or whatever it is to be an ok back up instead of a younger fella. The PL has great pull.

If we don't do that we'll just be treading water.b

Muniz was the type of move that worked well for example

Super Mick

If he gets injured can we can rely on Jiminez with no competition?

Stansfield is a striker too, so would be an option there.

Just having him on the bench turned Muniz into a superstar - best £4m we ever spent  :slap:

If he can have the same impact again, I'd have him back in a heartbeat!
underrated comment right here. haha

Interesting that he includes Josh King as the 7th midfielder, which would essentially end any likelihood of bringing in another CM. I've always maintained we need 7 players for those 3 positions, so good to hear him phrase it like that.

Some of our best football last season was with Cairney/Pereira as CMs in front of Palhinha. I can absolutely see Smith-Rowe & Pereira starting together in front of Berge or Lukic against the lower half teams, with a more robust Lukic/Berge base against the top half teams.

Really like the way he is bigging up Josh king ,if only Parker did that with Matt o reilly

Part of the reason I'm keen not to block off the youths path to the first team. Why have the academy at all if we're not going to give these kids their chance at minutes if they deserve it. King took his and at such a young age is seemingly not being sent out on loan but it's seen that it's possible he can actually contribute this season in some capacity. Great for him and great motivation for our other youth players.

On that note - interesting to see in the Motspur Park video a ton of our youngsters in there training with the first team. Is this commonplace during the season?

spotted the usual suspects (Stanno, King, Godo, Luc DF)
But also Osmand, Šekularac, Gofford and a couple others.

Depay still a free agent if we want a striker/winger all in one after we sign one for a fee!

Will leave @jayffc to dig up the obligatory highlight reel  ::scarf::

 :slap:

Ask and ye shall receive ha!

insert obligatory highlight reel here ::scarf::

Fits the left footer who plays RW and can play across the forward line narrative.
Top 10 for completed dribbles in Europe last season just behind Leroy Sane and just ahead of Jamal Musiala. The "League 1 dribble king"

25 years old.
Looks like he'd be thoroughly entertaining to watch.
Yes please!

Questionable source though - Peter O'Rourke who lots seem to give a load of stick to for being useless. Can't say I've paid close enough attention. The other links look more credible so far but hey... Exciting link anyway, someone get Rutzler on the line and see if he's heard anything!

You're right - it doesn't need to be a dissertation; I sometimes forget to read my own writing.

Thank you for adding to your previous response. I don't disagree with it.

My reservation would be that whereas those players who turn a handsome profit, such as Minteh, become known to us all, there are others who come and go without making any headlines - Marcelo Djalo (remember him?) - and unless you support that club or you avidly track all clubs' comings and goings, then the chances of losing money  on young players from less challenging leagues can seem less of a risk than it actually is. Moreover, a look at our U21 squad tells me we signed Borto, Sekularac, Donnell and Tanton from foreign shores, so we've not completely buried our heads in the sand when it comes to scouting young talent from abroad.

Above all, however, I don't see that your 'super-simple point' is at odds with my earlier post. I said I thought it was important to have a team with experienced players when introducing youngsters and that we would be planning to invest in the latter next summer.

I completely agree and this has been my number one concern for some time now, but people usually dont want to listen to such "negativity". Why worry about peeing your pants when it actually feels good at the moment?

Luckily this seem to only be in our transfers. The club in its whole tend to be well run. But things can change quite quickly, as we have seen numerous times

Cuz I am not as educated as many I will continue to spend all day tomorrow looking at the latest news. Look at everybody else's University dissection or visitation or whatever it is called. Thoroughly enjoy myself. Be insulted for no reason and end up having a lovely day.

Then look forward to Saturday.

Lyon make last minute loan move for winger Zaha....clearing the way for an exit in "ernest" for a certain winger?

👀

Just read john textor who wants to take over Everton already owns a major stake in lyon which might swya things... But also his company owns 45% of crystal palace??! Suprised owners are allowed to be major stakeholders in multiple clubs in the same league?!

Thankfully tomorrow watching a days cricket at hove so won't be watching Fulham based Sites for latest news.
