I have always thought our Sports Director has always been slow to react trying to make it look like he's good at his job to impress his dad in my eyes it's the opposite impression.

Quite a lot of credible sources reporting Spurs in for Palhinha now, not sure how  I feel about this.

I honestly can't see him agreeing to renew his contract with us if signings in the summer continue to be so slow and difficult while our rivals are speeding ahead and I don't blame him.

What? Why so negative?

I read what Silva said completely differently.

What I think Silva acknowledges is that yes we haven't signed anyone, and he'd like to, but he's acknowledging that the club and himself are working hard, which to me implies a lot of effort to achieve what he wants to see done and an acknowledgement the effort is there, to get the right players in.

Silva also seems to acknowledge that he's not alone in wanting all new players in and suggesting that it's more a part of management then anything particularly frustrating to him individually.

There's a significant difference is putting in no effort, being lazy and ineffective, vs putting in a lot of effort and moving things forward for ambitious targets.

Now, the only slightly ambiguous term for me is that we have a lot of business to do in this market.. does he mean we have a lot of players to bring in? I have a striker, one winger, a backup gk and a goalscoring central midfielder.. which is 4 and not a lot of business.

So maybe another winger, a LB?

6 players though isn't necessarily a lot of business though.

Why am I so negative? Because we are slow and arduous in the transfer window every year, and every year Marco says the same frustrated thing that he'd like transfers in sooner. He's also only got one year left in his contract, if he was happy about it and wasn't frustrated he'd have signed a new contract a while ago.

And of late, every year around this convo we've actually ended up starting perfectly well, Last year, same comments all summer - first signing was July 26th (Sess who still didn't play till way into the season) and we were 6th at one point in first half of the season, in fact the issues have generally come at the end of the season rather than the start. People said the same about SIlva extending last time, and he did, and he was backed with some big money signings of players he apparently pushed hard for (ESR being one of the main ones)

Brighton have lost half their squad. Listen, it's definitely a strong start to fixtures this year, but we have a settled squad that hasn't lost any of it's main players and have shown they can compete with the best of them when fit as it is. Yes it needs strenghtening, and strengthen we will. His comments hardly seem like he's livid and kicking off.

That squad lost seven of the last ten games last season. It needed strengthening before now. It's ridiculous that three weeks before the season we're still waiting for new players to support the squad. Every season the manager expresses his frustration at the lack of early signings. Personally I don't blame him.

He probably isn't interested in a return if it is true that he wants to play european club competitions.

So the bit when our in form striker Muniz got injured and Raul was having to play full 90 mins, Robinson was needing surgery, Iwobi knackered etc.

We just ignoring 3/4 of the season where they were top half and capable of beating huge teams, especially when fit.

The starting squad are very, very capable as it is of competing in the top half as it is has proven over majority of last season... and we WILL be adding quality to that group on top, we will have a third striker, we will have wing enforcements etc. but even if bedding them in off bench, we can field a team on day one that was top half for vast majority of last season.

Again last year we were 6th in November and that team hadn't even signed anyone by this stage of last window. Same circling every year

When we were top half we were still failing to beat teams below us. Any team can be 6th in November. It's where you finish after 38 games that matters and we fell short so myself, most supporters and Marco Silva would have preferred it if the club had been able to strengthen the squad before now.

"

If they didn't also lose some games we'd win the league, obviously, Liverpool lost to us - they were still league winners. There were games we didn't perform so well, of course, but losing to some teams we "should" have beaten doesn't buck the fact this team got more wins than ever in the clubs premier league history and so clearly capable of being highly competitive as it is. "Any team can be 6th" Sure - If they are being competitive they can yeh - any team can be top half most of the season - IF they're squad is capable of competing well

You're missing the point.

This squad has proven it can compete well enough to challenge for a european place when fit and not smashed with major injuries to key players like Muniz-Wilson-Tete-Robinson for extensive periods like we were later in the season+ reportedly ESR playing through issues too, Castagne needing surgery etc.

Barring any random injuries in pre-season they will be rested and ready to go for the new season as a full group again...like they were when they were up to 6th in the league prior to that spate of difficult injuries to key players.

Introduce into the mix ON TOP of those, the key 4-5 signings we will make over the next month or so and maybe we'll have that squad depth that means we don't tail off after a terrific start like we did last year. No one said it wouldnt be preferable, or ideal, for them to be early... But sorry, the stats for us over recent history just dont show it's worth all the over the top, alarmist circling on here all summer aboutt his issue. IF it were this big an issue, we would see slow starts for Fulham all the time, followed by strong finishes consistently. Hasn't happened.

Also this Binary thing about "bottom half/Top half team is equally dull. There was 2 points in it - a 1 game swing, as mentioned several times - in all but one other premier league season in history - that points tally = easily top half. Finishing 11th is what goes down as the end result, sure, but deeper analysis of the context/circumstances that majorly contributed to that end period matters when it comes to assessing our current full squads ability to compete.

Over the last three seasons, our first business has been at alarmingly similar times!
23/24 - Jimenez - 25th July
24/25 - Sessegnon - 26th July

It is not a super exciting move, but I am happy that we've swiftly replaced Benda when it became clear we needed a better back-up. I just hope we see big movement for first team signings ASAP.
