Good, I hope we close this one quickly. 2 of Andre/Lukic/Reed to start every game should be good enough for the two more defensive midfield positions, with Cairney also capable of playing in that more defensive role agaist weaker opposition.

Sky reporting it now then there is stubcance in it.

Quote from: FFC In Oz on July 18, 2024, 12:04:48 PMReally looks like we're going to be cutting it fine.  Many PL clubs have already been doing business whilst we sit quietly looking to save a few million quid.

Would've been nice to see Joao and Andre together.

So you'd have paid the original asking prices of £40m for ESR, £30m for McTominay etc.? The difference between what we will likely pay in sensible fees for ESR and others will probably then give us space to buy another player like Bruun Larsen so just caving straight away and paying quoted prices will stop up being able to afford other players we need. We know at this point we mostly need quality in key positions so need to try and get the best deals possible so we have wiggle room for the squad fillers who will come along as well

No, not necessarily.  But I'd be much more swift with our negotiations to try and get deals sorted so our main signings are in place 3-4 weeks before the season.

How exactly would you be more swift as you put it ? Presumably by paying the asking price. If the club actually wants to sell, the nearer they get to deadline day without achieving their sky high price the greater the pressure will be on them to reduce their price. You can't speed that process up.

I find this line of defence a bit like saying it's not our fault we lost at home to Forest, it's their fault for not letting us win.

Of course there will be the odd deal we leave late but by and large, we should be going in with respectable offers early on, and if they're not playing ball we simply move on. As I said up the thread, if we've properly invested in scouting, there will be plenty of alternatives to the rather unimaginative prospects of Smith Rowe and McTominay.

The thing is when we leave it late, not only does it mean we get 10% less games out of the player, but we also run the risk of the deal falling through and being left with a gap in the team that condemns us to another written-off season.

To be fair to the club, although it is incredibly frustrating for Marco and us to wait so long transfer business, not sure anyone can deny how successful it has been has been for the last 3 years. We have only signed the odd dud and they haven't costed too much (thinking Mbabu). The rest have all been incredibly successful. They have helped us win promotion and have then helped us perform brilliantly for two years in the prem consolidating our position which was the ultimate goal. Also made massive profits so our FFP position is the best it has ever been in. Also made signings with further significant profit potential (Bassey and AP). I get as frustrated as anyone but this penny pinching does add up. Save £5 million on each deal over 5 deals and we have an extra £25 million or to put it another way an extra Andre.

We are going for absolute top end targets for our level to try and improve which we all want. Although our FFP position is good 5 or 6 top end targets are expensive so it is still a push when adding them together so the best deal possible is required on each one.

The prob with the likes of ESR is that Arsenal are in little rush to sell where we want him in early so they hold the cards. They do want him out by end of the transfer window so the longer it goes the more pressure there is for them to reduce the price. Until the end of the window no loss for them to hold out. Was the same with Leno.

If we could just get RCB, DM and LW done for Man U the rest can prob wait until deadline day if it had to as got a very good team if we get those 3 positions in. I won't hold my breath for the reasons above but even 2 out of the 3 would be decent if we can somehow push another through on a good deal.

I still think that RCB is our number 1 priority and hopefuly we'll get someone soon.

Andre, ESR, a new RCB and a backup LB(I'd try to get FBT back if he's interested) and I think we'll be okay, providing no one else leaves.
Given how cheap 12 m is nowadays, Id say thats a smart piece of business. Cheaper than our RCB backup

I suppose the trouble is would he be an upgrade on Diop? I think that is what we are looking for. Sure Serbian lad will be way better placed than me to answer that but if he'd be considered a back up not sure that is what the club are looking for. The fact they have been going for Chalobah would suggest they are looking higher. As I say maybe I'm underestimating this fella but he sounded more solid than anything. We also need a really good passer and not sure that is his strength.

I Ronic

The investment in the club over the last few years has been huge. Training ground, stand etc. So I don't believe our transfer committee Marco, TK, scouts etc is going to be as tinpot as some imagine on here. There'll be target's and budgets. Who we're willing to sell and so on.
Then there are the clubs that own those targets who have their own values and the agents of those targets and the players themselves.
I'd like the first signing through the door to be one whose at the top of Marco's list. Then maybe that will change the dynamic. Other players may see the sense of coming here and the club can use the fact that funds, now available have shrunk. So let's all get real and hammer out a deal for the next and the next.

I dont know either, not saying that we shouldve signed. Just saying it looks like a decent deal.

However, he was playing regularly at a quite good Fiorentina side who made it to the conference final two years in a row, so saying he probably isnt much of an upgrade to Diop, who struggled at two different clubs for game time, might be ye olde Fulham bias perhaps?

Notice: Fulham have enquired for the conditions of transfer for Colombian MF, Palerias player, Richard Rios (24), at the asking of Marco Silva. The club has a price tag of 18m for his exit.

Yep, he's definitely a name I recall that people were really losing it that he went to them and how we missed out! Was really unimpressed everytime I saw him.

Well last summer we were after a Fiorentina CB who ended up going to Brighton and didn't make much of an impact. It's a much slower league so defenders coming over from that part of the world can struggle to keep up with the intensity of the PL

Igor was better in one season. Milenkovic had 2-3 poor seasons by his standards, but before that he was one of the highest rated young centrebacks. Last year he(Milenkovic) was more or less back to his best and had a strong EURO performance as well.

As for Chalobah being an upgrade on Diop and Milenkovic not, I personally think Milenkovic is miles ahead of Chalobah, who I think is very overrated and extremely injury prone. He looked really promising at the start of his career but has been bang average since. I rate Diop higher than Chalobah.

Andre would be a class signing. Concrete interest from Liverpool and he is a regular for the Brazil national team. For a lower-mid table prem side to sign someone who is already a Brazil national is a huge coup!

The Brazilian NT isn't exactly on a high right now. Their current central midfield play in midtable English clubs like Aston Villa, Newcastle, West Ham, Wolves and Fulham, not Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Think he'd be a great signing mind you.

No-one knows what the club is doing in the background trying to sign players,

Fair play mate re Milenkovic. Said you'd know best so potentially we have missed out on a good deal then but doesn't sound like we tried much so maybe the club/Marco just didn't see it that way.  I suppose it is what Marco thinks and by all accounts he seems to rate Chalobah so maybe he sees him as an upgrade. To be fair I don't think there is much between Tosin, Diop or Chalobah. They all have good strengths but also bad weaknesses but all decent players.  Doubt we'll get Chalobah anyway as doesn't seem at all interested in coming so hope they have a good plan B! Sure they will of course.
