Quote from: Craven Mad on August 08, 2024, 03:18:39 PMFor the right price, Fab is a no-brainer for me.

Put your pride aside, and he's a player who:

- could fill-in on the left of our attacking three;
- has successfully worked with us/Marco previously;
- would effectively come at a 20% discount (due to the sell-on clause we hold);
- is still only 21 and counts as homegrown; and
- has a lot of upside potential.

A three of Fab/ESR/Iwobi behind Muniz would offer a high work rate and fluid goal scoring threat.

I see what you're saying but at least one of the points is mute.

Fabio left us for a free to Liverpool, it's important to remember that - he chose to leave when his contract ran out so we got nothing. Getting 20% off may seem good, but if they try selling Fabio to us for £20m, then they're still making a £16m profit off us, for a player they got for free and have done nothing with since. I don't think he's worth that much given how little he's played since he joined them. He shows glimpses for them on their preseason tours, but rarely has featured in the seasons.

It is important to remember something that is completely wrong.

Well if they want £20m for him and we get 20% off and they also paid us £5m in compensation, so the real cost is £11m which isn't the end of the world. It still leaves a bitter taste but we are getting a hell of a player and for that price we will struggle to find an alternative.

The rules need to change around young players, I blame Liverpool and I also don't blame Liverpool

I agree with what you are saying but it's actually even less. We were paid c. £7m in comp so if the transfer were £20 then the net cost would be just £9m rather than £11m.

Even better then. And in fact if you think about it, it's even better than that from a financial perspective anyway. If Andreas leaves we will probably get about £25m to £35m for him, that leaves us with a nice net profit between Andreas leaving and Fabio coning in

Exactly this. Said it on here a few times. If we could sell a 28 year old AP with little goal threat who will never be worth more for £25m and buy a 21 year old Fabio for anything less it has to be a bit of a no brainer. I think AP does offer a lot but does he offer more than Fabio even now? Maybe in some aspects but Fabio will score goals. If he smashes it with us in the prem the next few years he's worth a fortune. ESR is just as good left if not better than at 10. His stats are great left and plenty of Arsenal fans say they feel it's his best position. Sure some games ESR would still play 10 with Iwobi left and Fabio bench. Essentially then a better option than AP? Is for me but not sure Marco would agree as he loves AP and doubt this would happen.

Moussa Dembele the 3rd

I'd be up for selling Andreas as part of an exchange with Chelsea for Chalobah and bringing back Fabio to back up ESR. I really think ESR needs to be our new starting 10.

Meanwhile they're also linked to Anguissa at around 16m euros... Imagine the outrage if we brought him back from some 🤣

Can't see the Fabio leaving Liverpool personally. Slot and club sources seem to suggest they've appreciated his pre season performances and attitude so really does feel like a non starter. Plus, great for squad, but Fabio needs game time and I'm not convinced unless we shift players, it's worth our time and investment. Maybe next year when Pereria is ultimately shifted but he's a significant downgrade on him currently. He's not progressed since he left us so he's at best a squad player unless he manages to really hit form. Love Fabio but feels very square peg round hole.

I think Marco might plan to use ESR as the 10 and Andreas as an 8 which is what we saw against Sevilla. Playing deeper may really suit AP as he can be a deep lying playmaker which will allow him to get on the ball more without as much pressure which is where he can struggle. The Hoffenheim match should tell us a lot more.

Wonder if were Particularly high on Luc D F and so want to see how he gets on with this as a stop gap rather than spending 10s of millions. Good player diego and LDF already a canada international at such a young age.

Might be a sensible bit of business

Completely agree.

But I'll go with whatever the club and Marco Silva decides. To be fair, the club have been very good in the last few transfer windows so I'm sure they'll get it right.

No problem and trust the club with Marco involved .

Is this not the opposite of the Robinson transfer, where apparently we didn't have to give Wigan a fee but did so anyway as a gesture of goodwill?
In this case, an historic Brazilian club is in financial difficulty, so we're bending over backwards to exploit that and screw them out of their best player at a discounted price (substantially below the amount we agreed last year, by some accounts).
Interesting.

The circumstances at the time were not what you are suggesting:

'Fulham took advantage of a clause in Robinson's contract that meant he could leave for £1.9million if Latics were relegated from the Championship - which was triggered by their 12-point deduction.

Fulham actually paid £2million to help Latics out but - crucially - they accepted a sell-on clause of 20 per cent.

One of the administrators, Paul Stanley, confirmed that was the case during one of the press conferences at the time.'

Give over Angus, weve reportedly offered them 25m, a record fee for them. More than they've ever received for a player. And so far no other club have offered that this year, nor the supposed 30m they're holding out for. We've hardly low balled them here. Were not a charity and its not our responsibility to bail out mis managed clubs with extra millions on top of our valuation

Weve put in a more than reasonable offer and have set a line that even their own fans think is fair.if even true that we Offered reportedly slightly under what we offered last year, well.... makes sense, a year older and one less year on his contract so no need to create yet another angle to have a dig about

The Robinson buy was the best but of this regime's buys and he's shown loyalty  to the club. Also his game has been improved by Marco and his staff.

Funny angle to approach this from - the Robinson transfer was the contrast/mitigation where we'd apparently behaved admirably.

If I overstated our benevolence there, well remove that counterbalance and you're just left with the much less favourable situations where we connived with Soloman to avoid paying Shakhtar a £7m fee (roughly equivalent in value to the 30% sell-on clause Levi is criticised above for refusing to pay, by the way) and now the apparent, somewhat unscrupulous exploitation of Fluminense's woes to get Andre at a discount.

I've said ad nauseum how I believe our penny-
pinching to be massively counterproductive, but in this instance, it isn't a criticism of the club so much as a criticism of those fans who complain about Liverpool taking Carvalho and such like, whilst simultaneously congratulating our transfer team for their Dickensian frugality at the expense of clubs ravaged by war and insolvency.

"unscrupulous exploitation" is such an overtly negative framing ...  We reportedly offered them a record transfer fee of £25m. A fee that so far no other club is offering by the way. £5 million pounds on top of 25 already isnt pennies. And all this is based off of loose speculation anyway, we dont know the ins and outs so why take such an actively strong anti club position over everything all the time.

Where other clubs have faced sanctions for flaunting ffp weve steadily been doing well the last few years, securing premier league status whilst avoiding any such sanctions.

Personally annoying as it is, I dont blame clubs like Liverpool for raiding young players cheap, and can understand why kids sign with them too. Just the nature of a competitive business much as its frustrating. But making out were some reprehensible actor screwing over fluminese whilst supposedly offering £25m is a stretch to say the least

I really don't think LDF is ready for the PL. He's going to need to gain a good bit of strength to be a CB in the PL at his height. Also being a Canadian international doesn't really mean that much. They have a pretty good first 11 but their depth is really bad.

I do think getting Carlos is probably the best case for LDF's future at Fulham. He wouldn't be here for more than 3-4 years at most given his age which gives LDF enough time to gain strength and experience on loan to then come in as a starter. Someone younger like Chalobah could keep him out of the lineup for 6+ years.

Yup agree hes not ready yet, this would allow him to go out on loan for a couple seasons and get game time in and see where hes at come 2026 time👌🏼 (what I meant by see how he gets on btw)

Think its perfect time for him to try life in league 1 or 2 then championship depending on how that goes

Yeah I definitely misread what you said and basically repeated your point haha. My bad.

Agree on a loan for him. Would like a recall option in January so he can be moved up a league if he does really well.

I always think the January recall league move is a risky decision, if a player is doing well at a club it generally means he's settled in well and training well, I always think it's best having them do wel throughout a season rather than risk disrupting their balance

I don't regard establishing the facts of Robinson's transfer as a 'funny angle to approach from'.

Quote from: Angus Telford on August 08, 2024, 04:54:00 PMIn this case, an historic Brazilian club is in financial difficulty, so we're bending over backwards to exploit that and screw them out of their best player at a discounted price

In my opinion, your motivation is not what you would have me believe. Yours is not an appeal to the Club to show compassion for Fluminense's sake. This much is clear from your turn of phrase: 'bending over backwards to screw them out of their best player...'. This is the rhetoric of attack.

It seems to me you are using Fluminense's admission of it perilous financial position to underline your own dissatisfaction with our approach to the signing of Andre. Nor would I concur that your reference to the signing of Robinson is intended to mitigate against our attitude towards Fluminense - or contribute towards a balanced critique of the Club. Instead, I would say its purpose is to suggest a decline in how the Club operates - a decline that (were it true) serves to further validate your dissatisfaction. Hence my remark about the need to 'look for another stick'.

This is my take. You won't agree, of course. How can you? Others will make up their own minds as to what they think.

As for all that followed the first line of your last reply: From my end of things, it goes off at a tangent. It doesn't relate to what I inferred from the post of yours I originally quoted. I hope you won't mind my offering no response to it.

Wherever that balance currently sits, it clearly needs to be recalibrated. With a wealthy chairman, new stand, top class manager, core of a good team and ample FFP headroom, our negotiating team's terrible execution of transfer strategy appears to be the one thing holding us back at this point. We remain far more effective at getting players out the door than getting them in, having offloaded our best player in good time, but facing suggestions above that we can replace him by playing Bassey out of position in DM when the season starts next week. Any news on how we're going to replace Mitrovic yet?

I think MS and the recruitment team are doing much better than we did under Kline and the stats system for example. Both Mitro and JP wanted out, and in the case of Mitro the current squad (Muniz) has stepped up so it makes sense to strengthen the squad where it is needed. I am not nearly as gloomy on our policy vs. years passed and it's hard to be so harsh given FFP and the fact the window is still open.

The recruiting these days is far better under the days of Magath who was one of the worst managers this club has ever had...

I wonder what he is doing today... putting cheese on his aching ageing body?  ::scarf::  :slap:  :guitar-playHDs:
Just think, if we'd bought a Cheese Factory Hangeland would still be playing.

Mano Menezes admitted that André and Jhon Arias have an uncertain future at Fluminense
After the elimination to Juventude in the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil, coach Mano Menezes admitted that defensive midfielder André and attacking midfielder Jhon Arias could leave Fluminense . According to the coach, the duo's situation remains undefined.

– We have a lot of things on our minds, we have a lot of things to decide, we have a lot of things in the middle of the road, either here or there. Situations of uncertainty. We have André, we have Arias. We have a lot of little things that make our hair turn white and sometimes even lose it. But we have to resolve them, we are here to resolve them and try to make sure they are really focused on the games and demand a lot of that – said Mano Menezes.
