Will we make 250 pages before he actually signs?

I doubt United can afford Robinson. He's got to be worth £50m

... but for £40m though? .... I don't think our budget would stretch that far, and for £40m you want a finish product imo... he certainly has potential... but at that price, that's one hell of a gamble.

That's just brightons modus operandi. Buy bright young players - mainly attackers - and do well and sell some of then for huge profit

Paying £40m for someone with 8 goals in 66 appearances as a forward is bonkers - he's shown nothing to suggest they'll make any money on him and by that logic means Muniz is worth well over £50m

That's because he is not a goalscoring forward. More of a technical 10

Quote from: Angus Telford on August 20, 2024, 04:55:45 PMCouple of responses:

Add-ons will be things like 50 appearances, not getting relegated etc. Unless the player turns out to be a crock or a flop, they're essentially just deferred fees. So for all the signings we consider "successful", the reference fee should include add-ons (and therefore assume we're ultimately paying £25m for Berge, not £20m).

Secondly, it's all well and good cherry-picking signings like Tosin from years gone by, we could also have a debate about Mitroglou. However, looking at our business in the last 3 summers, which has been our most successful, it's been successful because we've signed mostly established PL players. Which is great, we avoid flops like Mitroglou, but comes at a premium - very few of our signings are, or ever will be, worth more than we paid for them. Only exceptions are Palhinha, Perreira, and hopefully Muniz and Bassey.

That strategy is potentially fine but it relies solely on cash rather than scouting intelligence or guile, so (a) is inconsistent with this whole notion that we're shrewd, economically efficient market operators, and (b) will see us ultimately underperform anyone that outspends us (Bournemouth imminently and Forest before long).

To reiterate, I'm not unhappy with the Berge signing. Great player... but he's probably already reached his ceiling, £25m isn't cheap, and we also could have just signed him in June IMO.

Again, im happy as you seemingly are that Berge could work out well for us as a player... that said:

1. We don't know what the addons are for - in the case of ESR it actually turned out that it was seemingly related to us being in Europe or winning silverware as per the BBC. So no reason to assume its something trivial or a formality necessarily. They'll generally be things that if we hit them they will have proven worth the extra expenditure. Not sure if avoiding relegation would be in there now we established ourselves a bit more, and given ESR's didn't feature anything like that seemingly.

2. Claiming cherry-picking seems a bit silly when you're talking about Tosin signed in 2020, as though he's "from years gone by" when he's conveniently only 1 season outside of your 3 year cut off, and we got 4 years out of him with him only just having left the club this year... . Then acting like Mitroglu is in the same conversation as him?...when we signed him in 2014 along with Scott Parker....as a player ha (!) that's a pretty sizeable hop skip and a stretch.

The hit rate in terms of the quality of the players from Tosins onwards has been very high both domestic and foreign even if they didn't do that well here (and most of us it seems would look at parker for that more than the players give their subsequent careers from that period onwards have been impressive when it comes to Lookman,Andersen,Areola, Lemina etc)... and a number of players from that Tosin window still here today - Reed, Tete ,Robinson...so a bit much to act like its some ancient window comparible to Kostas a decade ago and shouldn't included because it falls out of a window picked to conveniently not include them - when 3 of them still play for us 2 in our starting 11 currently

Yes, in our last couple seasons we've brought in a good group, a number of which have prem experience... yet 2 of our top 3 most expensive signings in the last 2 seasons were Palhinha and Bassey, neither prem players.

Of our starting 11 from the other day - 5 of them weren't established prem players when signed. That seems a perfectly reasonable ratio of nearly half the team - last season before selling Tosin and Palhinha it was often 6 of the starting line up that weren't established prem players when signed.... And regardless, you don't have to shop from abroad to make astute signings, Leno a great example of that... Forest have spent tons of money on GKs the last 3 years and still dont have a player better than Leno there

If he came with the attitude of working for the team whilst showing his ability on the ball and no balshy attitude. Then yes.

At the end of the day, if we sign Berge it will be a good signing.
The kind of player we need, so if it goes though let us rejoice.

The speed of the deal would suggest he actually wants to play for Fulham.

Don't be overlooking that people.

We need pride and passion. Not paychecks

Does my head in transfers and how they can vary so significantly in terms of time frames to get done. Clearly when everything is aligned they can be done in a day or two maximum, maybe 3 including the initial contact... yet without fail, for some reasons or however it raises its head, there are always deals that seemingly go on for months... and need to.. surely people can make their minds up faster then that re how much a player is worth, what a final offer is, talking to the players reps to figure out if there's interest from the player etc.. It seems pretty criminal how long the world of football can drag these sagas on for..

Speaking of which, apparently if Fluminense lose tonight they may hae to sell Andre and take a reduced price...

Feel a club being in a financial pickle is a rarer state by which to leverage for a signing, though does happen..

Think Berge will be a win win for him and us,also he should improve on what we have in the building as well, that's what it's about to push onwards and upwards as a club ,stagnate is not an option as a team .To keep Marco and his team we have to back him which the khans are doing that and keep doing it.

Ipswich will pay £30m for Broja if they stay up
Latest from Sky Sports News' Dharmesh Sheth:

Ipswich's loan move for Armando Broja is expected to include an option to buy, worth in the region of £30m.

This would become an obligation if Ipswich were to avoid Premier League relegation.

Broja is expected to undergo a medical on Wednesday.

I think they are working very well in the transfer window

I'm surprised a Fulham fan would think this was a good deal really. I saw nothing from him and supposedly, Silva didn't either to suggest he's a premier league player, let alone a £30m player so an obligation to buy is crazy to me.

Quote from: Angus Telford on August 20, 2024, 07:34:09 PM@jayffc I mean there's not much point having a discussion if you can't acknowledge our common ground that the last three years have been better than those before, or our irrefutable, painfully stark, overwhelmingly bleedin' obvious focus in that period on established PL players in a particular age bracket. There's a legitimate discussion to be had about the merits (some of which I've acknowledged) and disadvantages of that strategy, but arguing about Tosin only being one year outside that period (i said 3 summers including this one so it's two outside anyway) and such like just feels like an argument for the sake of disagreeing

I mean...I pointed out that we agree in some places and even led with being glad we're seemingly both enthusiastic about the signing of Berge?

I even said "Yes, in our last couple seasons we've brought in a good group, a number of which have prem experience... yet 2 of our top 3 most expensive signings in the last 2 seasons were Palhinha and Bassey, neither prem players."
So before making the point I clearly said *yes - we have signed a number of players like you've mentioned.* So I literally did acknowledge common ground?

I have also previously here pointed many many times that the last 3 have been good (and I'd argue more than just 3 years which is why I said what I said on that specific point regarding Tosin/tete/robinson)
I've made these points here many times with you so it should be a given at this point? I'm not sure why I needed to point that out again (although I kinda did) as you surely know this already? Also have stated before here multiple times that there does indeed seem to have been more emphasis on established prem players the last couple of windows while we establish ourselves in the league- but that doesn't mean I would undersell the fact it's been blended with signings outside of the league too - and good ones at that - some of which were our more expensive signings. So I'm not sure why it would need saying again? especially as the point is I wasn't even saying otherwise?

I was speaking directly in response to your specific points about wether one can conclude our work has been "shrewd" and questioning your conclusions just because we've focused on specific experience or age brackets - Pointing out someone like Leno as an example - a shrewd signing whos both older and an established premier league player... And also pointing out that we've still effectively blended experience with other players who aren't established prem players - many of which are in our squad still. so it's nothing to do with just disagreeing for the sake of it? Again I don't feel the tone was off but I disagreed with a couple points so made mine in response to those just as you do all the time.

I do think we've sensibly opted lately for a blend of experience and then a nice assortment of signings from other leagues, no issue with saying so, I've said as such before, didn't think my response was at all for the sake of disagreeing. Indeed the point about addons was also very specific and made for the reason of pointing our a clear recent example that countered what was being said, not done for the sake of being contrarian, it was just a valid point to make.
