Quote from: Angus Telford on August 23, 2024, 03:23:12 PMIn that scenario where Andre is our first choice and available for £20m in the last week of the window (ie from 23 August) I'm not sure it would make much sense to sign an alternative, Berge for £25m on 22 August!

Indeed, it makes sense to think that either Marco prefers Berge to Andre or that Andre was not available for £25M earlier this week.

Fluminense selling him in the last week of the window could still mean they hold out until the 27th or 28th before accepting a low offer. Even if Andre were the Club's first choice, perhaps we felt we couldn't take the risk of letting Berge go elsewhere. Another club may come in for Andre. We can't be certain Fluminense will drop the price. There are things can go wrong.

I take on board that you largely welcome the Berge and Andersen signings.

Whether the price is dropped on the 23rd or 27th wouldn't make difference to the point I was making that switching to Berge just days before that price drop would be odd/illogical. But I think the common ground between us is that perhaps "Marco prefers Berge" or there's some other factors at play, rather than us just holding out for a £5m discount. Anyway, I seem to have upset Jay by disagreeing with him so I'll leave it there

Its not disagreeing that causes upset (or more appropriately frustration) its misrepresentation or innocent misunderstanding of the underlying point and the language and tone that comes out of such interactions. As stated.
Moving on for everyone's sake though

So in the last throw of the window and in the glow of another signing...

Pick your favourite from the current rumours:

Wesley
Cherki
Tsygankov

Who do we all fancy most out of that lot?

Tough one, it seems Tsygankov is the most accomplished of the lot. Like the idea of Wesleys rawness and pace. Cherki has all the skill in his locker to excite (And perhaps frustrate) the cottage croud. Finding it hard to pick . Think I'd be happy with any of them tbh, although Cherki at the rumoured agreed price seems great bang for buck, and perhaps leaves room for more additions in Jan or next year should we need them.

ffcthereligion

I'm not as combative as Angus, although I do enjoy his contributions, but in general my read of Jays posts over the summer is broadly in line with the interpretation Angus offered. Namely that Jay feels as a transfer strategy it's fair enough to keep our powder dry until the end of the window in the name of negotiation even if that means others might feel we are dithering on our top targets

I think that there are other factors at play.

I think it is naïve of us to think that there is just a list of targets and alternates that MS has approved.

For me it likely to be more complicated than that and it would certainly include a target cost for each of those players. If that is the case the list would then need updated during the transfer window to reflect the difference between target and actual cost with priorities and targets changed to enable our total spending to remain within the limits.
It could be better, but it's not a fantasy:

Broadly... but still doesnt cover the full position because there's more I'd add to that that is key. also what you've said here is actually closer to what was said originally than the way its been worded elsewhere in this thread... and the nuances are important in this case to the ultimate conclusions of what "undermines" whats been said, as opposed to whats been interpreted as being said + There are many more layers to it than a simple one- line rule. We'll just be draggin it up more though and it really, really doesnt matter at this point.

Just want to see out the summer window this week and enjoy the fact that hopefully however we've gone about it, we've given ourselves a competitive squad that hopefully most rate well and we can hopefully herald another largely successful window with players that will be here for with any luck, for years to come.

With hindsight well no doubt be able to see what worked well and what didn't,  but today, on paper, most seem positive about the work done so rather just focus on that at this point and enjoy the last week 😂

Tsygankov is also the most expensive at €30 to trigger his release clause and is more naturally a RW which is more a nice to have than a must have. I would say it needs to be a LW and then a striker/RW as a secondary option, but with Wilson and Adama at RW I don't see us signing someone as a specialist to play there right now. Feel like Cherki isn't going to happen because he's not keen on it, so maybe a left field LW pick still to come, the fact Berge came so out of the blue and happened so quickly suggests that we're probably deep in talks with other LW's. Apparently Barca have agreed a £11m fee for Chiesa but his wages are an issue, if ever there was a time to break our wage structure on a 5 year deal it's probably on him, and then maybe look at free agent Depay or maybe a cheeky loan for Richarlison/Sterling as last minute loanees?

I've mentioned him multiple times already, especially during EURO 2024. Roland Sallai. It seems like Leeds are interested in him, but he needs convincing, as they are in the Championship. Terrific player, was by far the best Hungarian player at both previous EURO campaigns, as well as in every game I've seen him play in the qualifiers. He's also been excellent at Freiburg every time I've watched him. He's in his last year of contract, can play on both wings (always plays on the left for Hungary, so would be a good fit) and can play in the middle as well.

McBrideOfFrankenstein

I doubt he'd come here but I think Sterling is still extremely dangerous and that his stock is artificially low right now. Imo he'd be a roaring signing for a mid table team.

Yeh sadly as someone else said he's on north of 300k. so the chances are slim to zero on this one unless Chelsea fancy paying 200k per week to make us better 😂

Caedal

I mean if Sterling wants to stay in London then his options are limited.

Wages are going to be a massive issue for anyone who wants to get him. I could see a loan + option to pretty much any of the prem London sides.

I don't think we'll go for him, but it would be a huge signing. Arteta sounds like he's like him at Arsenal

SP

Hope we don't sign Gnonto from Leeds, he looks a complete liability.

Really don't think Wesley can be the only addition. Don't get me wrong I would absolutely love to buy him this Summer but I really don't think he is ready to contribute in the PL immediately and we need someone who can play right away. Loads of potential but he isn't really making huge contributions in the Brazilian league right now despite getting a lot of minutes. Probably the ideal for him would be to buy now, loan back to Corinthians until the Winter then evaluate when he comes in January and possibly then send on a Championship loan for the rest of the year in addition to signing an immediate first team player.

hovewhite

I'm sure we will get quality forward in as Silva wants it.

Full Marco Silva interview - this part about being pragmatic about the realities of the market.

Great interview all round , but a pertinent segment worth taking stock of the words directly from the horses mouth.

"Of course we have to be ready for the market.
Of course we did plan well, ourselves and of course with the board, with Alastair, with Tony aswell...about what we need clearly.

I was clear with them what we need, and of course its a matter of business you know... Sometimes the players they come early, other times it's more difficult.

What was clear for us and the last season, super clear, we knew clearly what we needed and what we wanted and sometimes you have to be a little bit more patient.... Even if we go for the first game of the season or the second game of the season, you don't have your squad complete you don't have all the players ready to play and tomorrow is a good example, the players that we signed this week they are not going to be involved.

But we know really, and we have enough patience to get the right players. Business point of view of course the board has to do their best and they have been, they have been trying their best aswell too for us to put the team, the squad, in the position that we need.

Of course we have to say that we are really pleased. We need the last piece on it. and for sure, and I hope, that we are going to go in the right direction next week again to get the last piece in because we have to be really pleased........We know that we have a good squad again to go and compete at the level that we want to compete with in the premier league."

Fair to assume Wesley won't happen but for 15m I would have liked to see us have a go

Edwards is available for like 12-15m allegedly so he would be reasonably priced. He is a left footed RW though and we really need a LW unless Adama moves to the left

Yeah he's a great player but as you say he's predominantly a RW who can also play LW and we need a specialist LW right now. At £15ish million you could probably sign him and a LW but would hazard we'd sell one of our forwards if we did that
