bill taylors apprentice

Stansfield has done his apprenticeship in the lower leagues and now shows he is ready for games in the PL.

Why would we sell him now when his development is at an interesting point and before he fully matures into the player he can become?

We don't need the money and even if things don't go well and sell him for 2 million in a year or two that will cover the cost of the Academy for another year.

IMO he has an eye for goals that can't be coached and he will score at PL level given the chance.

Quote from: SerbianLad on August 30, 2024, 10:34:48 AMRe Ward-Prowse or any other potential midfielder: Marco clearly stated that it's going to be only one more player in unless we sell someone(in that case he said it would be a one in one out situation, on top of that winger of course). On top of that, midfield is where we have most depth probably, as we have at least three players that can play in each position, and in the 8 role where Ward-Prowse would probably fit in best, we have 6 players, potentialy 7 if you count Iwobi (or even 8 if Pajaziti stays). My guess is that either the rumour isn't true, or we are negotiating in advance, in case an offer we can't refuse comes in for one of our wingers.

Re the new striker rumour: it only makes sense if Stansfield is indeed going.

Re Stansfield to Birmingham: if they up their offer to 15 + 5 in addons and a sell-on fee I'd take it.

I think 10m+5m addons around promotion within 2 years and a hefty sell on fee (30% +) would probably be doable. If he goes in the future then for at least £20m we'd earn another £6m likely taking the fee to over £21m all in.

Do you think that TK has an "I AM STUPID" hat to wear

We have a long history of signing dud strikers - Steve Marlet for instance

How stupid would TK look if we passed on JS's potential, if he then developed into the bees-knees, for a fee that would rightly be described as loose change at his dinning table

We complain when Liverpool and Celtic hijack players for a pittance but you are happy to sell players who show potential.

It makes no sense.

Such transfer decisions always carry risk either way

I've stated I'm only happy with it *IF* we bring in a good-quality strike option to replace him. I've already said that I think he's earned the right to his chance, but would accept a scenario where there's a quality option available and we therefore cash in on a prospect who could just as easily be a bust at the top level as he could be a success.

All clubs have stories where they let younger players go because they weren't starters and they came good later, many also of instances where they sold decent young players for high prices that amounted to nothing. It happens and there's always a risk taken.

I'd like Jay to get his chance but if, and its. a big if, another option came up that looked more likely to contribute right now then I'd be alright with it is all assuming that those funds go to bettering us now. It's all a game of ifs... If we signed a player for example that could contribute more than Jay now..it could legitimately challenge Muniz up top and say we end up in a world where we then flirt with Europe for example - we might then be in a great position financially and in league standings to attract a player with a ceiling even higher than Stansfields, Who knows how it plays out.

Were you one of the throng that supported the man from Dawley New Towns comments about the clubs failure to lower the average age of our squad?

How does your idea work with that complaint about our club?

In one word. No.

Respectfully, You seem to be out for a fight Roberty.

I like having a young up-and-coming squad as much as anyone, though I think it generally works best blended with a healthy dose of experience. But the main thing for me is quality first.

We also don't know who we'd replace Stansfield with. For all we know they could be the same age but be deemed higher quality... if not the same age they could be under 24 and so still be considered plenty "young" so a bit of a moot point. On top of that - I already said, if we brought in a player that gave us an ever more likely shot at finishing higher up the league now, you open the door to a better talent pool (including of young players) next window. 🤷🏻♂️

I think ya a bit too eager to kick off here and your language way too inflammatory - especially when aimed at someone who I don't think you're realsing you seemed to mostly agree with this year.

As for addressing your now added comment above "out you go" (unnecessarily rude for no reason)

1. They arent the same scenario, this is arguing semantics - one we wanted a player and he left of his choice because he wasn't being played...the other we hypothetically make a decision to sell making a significant profit - that's already clearly been explained above.
If Jay then came good later I still wouldn't blame the club if they took a deal they felt was good for the club at the time in the same way I would be frustrated that O'reilly rejected a contract based on game time. Not the same thing.

2. We still have other youth players, we played Carvalho, we played Sess etc we do clearly develop youth where they're good enough or don't bugger off on their own accord early... another up-and-comer King I've literally been saying I hope gets minutes and who I certainly wouldn't sell at this point,  as I personally think he's got that air of top-level class about him that I haven't quite yet seen from Stanno at a younger age. (but am absolutely hopeful well see this year if we keep him, which again, I'm absolutely here for should we choose that as the better option)

3. Again -  No one knows who the replacement for him would be and what age they'd be?? They could also be in their early 20s for all we know but be deemed a hotter prospect or already doing better at a higher level? + again, the point was made that even in the scenario where you did opt for a more experienced player instead for a year (say richarlison for the sake of it)...if they got us finishing higher in the table - then next year you might be able to attract a top level hot prospect and the likes of Cherki etc become more interested in us as an option. Success now can breed the ground for better young players getting signed in the future too.

Really no need for this to be an argumentative exchange
Out you go - the three line comment - was for brevity.
Three quick lines to paraphrase what we appear to be saying to young players

I think the idea looks bad to any player behind him in the academy.
SK has invested a lot of him money into our club and I doubt that investing in our young players development is something he would object too. He is a proud man, proud to be the owner of our club.

Fair enough, in the context of the other messaging it was read the wrong way, easily done on this board.

I think there are plenty of examples of our youth players going to big clubs and having ongoing careers at a good level to not be too off putting tbh but understand where you're coming from even if I disagree.

Ayyy Rutzler with the confirmation!

Do Like the look of this one, think him and Adama are both pacey and direct battering rams that would cause a real headache - (and many other aches!) running at defenders this year. 15m (presumably up to 20) a decent price too. Left-footed RW who can play LW... Fits the bill

article also mentions lyon would hold a decent sell on clause.

LC

We should absolutely keep Stansfield and play him this season. I would rather keep him and bring no one else in this window.

It may depend on Jay wanting first team football. He knows he will play every week at Birmingham. But he is also on the verge of the squad at Fulham. The clubs reluctance to let him go probably means he will stay and hopefully be named as a regular match day squad player.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

Quote from: colinwhite on August 30, 2024, 10:26:11 AMI like jay Stansfield but I think hes a mile off premier league standard at this point in his career.

I don't think that's true. He's 21 and if you take Marco at his word he could just be about to have his break out season in the PL and for a team that many on here believe are mid table to top 10 in terms of quality.

If he does breakthrough and do well, then he's exactly on track for where he should be.

I really hope your right but the distance between being on the brink of a breakthrough and reaching success is massive trust me
And that was really my point
I'm definitely not writing him off

Let's put the lens to what he has achieved already. He went on loan to Exeter and played 36 times, contributing 16 g/a in League 1.

Then he went to a very poor Birmingham side in the Championships, who ultimately got relegated, but came out of it with the love and plaudits of their fans and having become a key player for them, contributing 14 g/a for them despite being in a poor team and with poor service and by default, probably not much possession.

He was likened to poacher Kevin Phillips by Birmingham fans, who said he was the most instinctive and natural finisher they had since Kevin - who was a consistent and regular premier league player (played 263 times in the PL, scoring 92 goals and getting 13 assists averaging a goal or assist every 2 games).

Birmingham have since built a squad that is expected already, without Stansfield, to storm league 1 - and have come back in for him, willing to spend (from what we know and have seen so far) £10m on him.

He's 21. Meaning he did what he did at Birmingham aged 20-21 and at Exeter aged 19-20 yrs old.

I don't know what you were doing at those ages, but I'd be impressed if you were doing anything of note to a similar degree.

So each time he's gone on loan he's delivered, regardless of the level, and despite his age and frame and playing competitive football.

Interestingly - Stansfield scored four of his goals last season in the championship against the three sides that got promoted too, which further suggests he can do a job in the PL.

Quote from: Roberty on August 30, 2024, 11:33:34 AMIf you want to limit the history to the current incumbent of the board room:-
I give you Kostas Mitroglou and if you want someone from the UK - try Chris Martin on loan.
Since Mitro was the only decent one we've had so you can look for the others yourself.

I would also put to you - how bad does it look if any potential gem from the academy is promptly sold as soon as he starts to emerge. Will this encourage boy with potential to sign up with us? I think not.
As to the money we loose - in the owners world - it is chicken feed - a bit more in terms of allowable spending but the risk and reward is perhaps worth it.

We blame Parker chasing out O'Reilly and now you want to push out JS - shame on you

Seems weird just choosing one position as proof that we don't sign a good player. There's loads of instances of duds we've bought in every position, and loads of legends in those positions too.

"Any potential gem from the academy is sold as soon as he starts to emerge" Not true at all. And players like O'Reilly just left as he didn't sign our deal. Not chased out, no fan can really push out a player, it's all done with business sense. Well it is now at least.

Agreed, but i can't help thinking of Cauley's near miss of the big-time though. Hopefully Jay will continue to impress and have a long Fulham career.

It'd be tidy, but not optimum.

Have watched a couple of Nuamah's highlights reels and he doesn't come across as very good, still very raw and much more of a player who doesn't always have that quality when it matters, he's missed scoring in one on ones with keepers; he runs to the byline and crosses without purpose or direction and his highlight reels also show him missing other shots or not watching the offside trap enough, or winning corners and throw ins - mainly because he can't beat the first man.

For me he's clearly not our first or second choice option, given the other players we've been linked with, and if he did sign, whilst I'd want him to do well, would put a dampner on what has been a very good window.. mainly because we've lost two attacking players, and in Willian a very good one who added value to our starting 11 and, like with Mitro and to a lesser degree Palhinha, we've will have failed to aptly replace them with the necessary quality.

For £15m too, I'd think that wouldn't make sense. I know good players are a premium, but this kid is largely unproven still and not really done anything noteworthy at OL. Considering what people think ofStansfield and the fact we've put a price tag on him over £10m, it may seem fair, but when you consider Forest got Jota for £7m and we got Cuenca for £7m too, it to me would represent poor value for money. Unless he comes good, which seems like a big IF at the moment.

Forest signing Benfica Morato for 15m + 5m add ons didn't they turn down our 30m euro bid last year.

Have said this a good 5 times already...

We lost Willian (left sided)
We lost BDR (right sided who can play across the line)

We already bought ESR (most success as a left-sided option who can play across the line)

Now we need to replace the predominantly right-sided player we lost (BDR)
.

LW options:
Iwobi/ESR/Stansfield/Godo/Sess

RW options:
Adama/Wilson - then Stansfield and Godo can do a job there but have been favoured on left so far.

Almost ALL of the players we've been linked with are predominantly RW's who can play across the line and on the other wing if we want. One can summise therefore that pretty clearly that's what we are actively looking and has been identified as our need by Marco and the club.

Ernest is a player who currently plays RW, but who is left-footed and can play LW also.

Agreed
Ideally a tried and trusted EPL wide man  who can score, yet is not wanted by his club.
Raheem Sterling on loan  if Chelsea are desperate enough to support his not inconsiderable wages.
A win-win for both clubs and the player himself!

Just out of interest, lets say they're charitable and decide to pay 50% of his wages, how would paying Sterling £162.5k a week be considered a win for them?

Agreed

In reply to General - he absolutely smashed it in Denmark age 18/19 (top flight player of the season) then just had a decent full season in the French top flight aged 19/20. He must have something.

We just need to check the birth certificate is legit.

He had a really poor season at Lyon but yeah apparently was great in Denmark. Hopefully he can kick on if he joins. Must have something about him.
