Quote from: Angus Telford on July 21, 2025, 09:41:00 PMWell at this point we could spend another three posts each dissecting the reasons why Ings (270 PL minutes) is (or isn't) a significantly bigger loss for WHU than Willian (252 PL minutes) is for us, or we could look at the bigger picture that all these clubs are making signings unlike us (rebutting the post i originally replied to), that even where they're replacing players they're often upgrading, and in any case if we want to be mentioned in the same sentence as Europe next year it's not WHU we need to be keeping up with but moreso the likes of Brighton.
Well then discard Ings completely. They still lost Kudus,Coufal, Antonio, Cresswell, Fabianski and Soler. Kudus is a huge miss. They replaced him with a 20 year old from Czech league. They replaced Coufal with Walker-Peters who was a free agent and I'd say that that is a like for like replacement in terms of quality. Their third signing is Todibo who played there last season on loan. So, they've lost some squad depth(Antonio, Creswell, Fabianski and Soler) and lost a star player in Kudus and replaced him with a talented but unproven player. I don't see how that isn't much worse than us keeping our team(that was much better than West Ham's last season) , but not making new signings.

Brighton upgraded their defence(on paper at least) with no major outgoings and two new signings, but they also lost two Premier League proven players in Pedro and Adingra and replaced them with very young players from different leagues. Again, same as with Kudus and West Ham, Kostoulas may turn out to be better than Joao Pedro, but at the moment I can't say that is much of an improvement in the squad overall. I don't think we're behind Brighton by a lot(if at all) when it comes to this window.

Would you rather we lost Iwobi and Sessegnon and replaced them with some unproven (but talented) players and then got an upgrade on Andersen and a free agent leftback, because that is the equivalent of Brighton's window, or do what we did, i.e. retain every important player, but get no one new.

NFR but Christ that's a fall from grace / great signing for Brum. With the obvious caveat this is like a Z tier rumour

Third striker anyone?  :slap:

jayffc

12m? No chance.

Random engagement bait. Mitro isn't going to the championship.

As for our rumours

Pau Victor would be epic, very exciting talent.

Nico Gonzalez another one, absolute baller in his fiorentina season but gone a lil off the boil at Juve (again as mentioned before though they had a very out of sorts season generally)

Both potentially big signings if any truth.

I mean, as a matter of fact, with a month of the window still left, swapping two older players for wonderkids, upgrading our weakest defender, and acquiring a backup full back, yes I'd probably take that over the zilcho we've done. Add in the fact they're starting the window having finished three places above us, yes I'd definitely take that switch. Is the answer supposed to be no?

Fair enough, each to their own, but I disagree. Joao Pedro is a proven player and someone who showed he can be a game winner multiple times (he's now shown this again in his first few games at Chelsea). Charalampos Kostoulas scored 6 goals in 21 games in the Greek league. Adingra didn't have his best season last year, he had 2 goals and 2 assists, but the season before that he had 6 goals and 1 assist. He also had a good AFCON campaign recently. Tom Watson scored 2 goals in the Championship last season.

Also, Brighton's players, Joao Pedro and Adingra are both pretty young too (both 23), so it's even worse than the Fulham scenario I posted.

Actually catches the ball sometimes and saves some long shots - maybe he will give Leno a run for his money

Nadiem Amiri who we've been linked with before is apparently getting a new agent. Apparently this guy is fantastic, in the AP mould - a pressing box to box midfielder with creativity.

Would be excited if we went in for him. He is 28, which won't excite some.

Nadiem Amiri, Nicolas Gonzalez, Reiss Nelson and Romulo Cardoso would be my perfect additions.

Mitrovic annual salary = £21million
Birmingham city squad salary 24/25 = £15million

Mitrovic is more likely to buy Birmingham City than them buy him!

You mentioned WHU yourself, now you're dismissing their comparison as they've lost half a squad!
It's really simple to admit that those teams have lost more and more vital players than Fulham despite their new, unproven signings.

Coastwalker

Leeds and Sunderland with more signings already today.
Every club is strengthening, the three promoted, the clubs below us last season also.
I know we keep our cards close to our chests in these matters, but it would be nice just to hear a bit of encouragement as far as a signing goes, instead of silly rumours all the time.
Dont really get all this secretive nonsense.

The debate, Jim, concerned the (patently untrue) statement that "Hardly anyone has signed anyone."

Then I merely said, when it was mentioned in mitigation that other clubs had lost players such as WHU losing Ings, that in that case we should also factor in us losing Willian.

As usual it all then got lost in several rounds of desperate one-upmanship and irrelevant pedantry.

Who would of thought that a team like Brentford (fair play to them) sell a player for £70m ! Whether United paid more (very likely) than his worth but a player stating he only wanted to join one team and selling club getting more than they likely expected at the start of negotiations? Was it £45m with £10m add ons.
The valuation of players is quite astonishing and we are likely to see more of the same mainly from the more elite In desperation looking at Mbuemo deal? Eyebrows were raised at £30m signing Anderson back? It's possibly Pro Rata with what we paid for Diop a couple of years before?

Good article on this new keeper assuming it does finalise. Encouraging run down:

From FFN:

"MP is busy today 👀 not only the game against WBA but a couple new faces in the building! 🔥

Also told Fulham are talking to Armand Laurienté after his failed Sunderland move."

Not given any frigging info for who these two new faces are.  ::cry:: Surely one is the keeper but another?!

On the collapsed Lauriente move found this:

Dodgy agents by the sounds of it.
