Third choice lol we were taking the p***, no wonder he turned us down.

I mean...that was clearly the case though? We have 2 good strikers, we couldn't promise him he'd start, that would be more taking the p*** if it didn't materialise.

he was gonna have to compete with them for a spot, with a view to stepping into rauls place next season with this being his last contracted year.

Hardly taking the piss is it. Just reality for a younger unproven striker. At Leipzig he would have less competition with Sesko moving on

If you're a £20m player moving abroad surely you'd be looking to be more than third choice? Like, why would we spend that amount on a player if, realistically, they're going to play Carabao Cup games and that's it?

Assuming Muniz stays...

From our point of view it would have been brilliant succession planning. High quality option that we develop over the next year to take over from Raul when he leaves end of his contract.

From his point of view third choice for us or probable starter for Leipzig? No brainer for him. Said this all along. Why we'll end up with Teremi as a ridiculously hard sell to get anyone of Romulo s potential quality to play third fiddle even if only for a season.

The only other option is to go younger and not ready yet but then you have an issue if you need to call on them. Prob end up with Taremi then and we then try and sign a Romulo type player next year if Raul leaves.
Agreed, this is the key issue. We were pitching to him to come play third fiddle in a mid-table PL side with no European football, Leipzig are offering first choice in one of the top Bundesliga clubs of the last decade, with real shot at Champions League football (ok last season was mid but surely an anomaly).

We were looking at spending £14 million on him, not £20 million.
Right but clearly that was far below his market value.

Believe it's where Leipzig started as well or even lower. It was defo worth a try. If Leipzig hadn't been in (they were looking at other options) could have had an absolute bargain

Fulham clearly didn't think he was worth £20 million.

To be quite honest I hold a higher view of Leipzig's talent ID (regarded as one of the best in Europe) than ours. So if they think he's worth £22m I'm going to side with them.

Because you're getting bogged down in semantics here. Being 3rd option doesn't mean he won't have a chance to claim a first team spot if he does well. The point is, given the strikers we have, we were looking at a young option as a project to develop knowing this might be Rauls last year here if at a decent price. From his perspective here he'd have been getting a move to the prem where he'd adjust to the speed steadily and without too much pressure, with oppurtunities to stake his claim for a starting spot in the cups or if anyone gets injured/out of form as they inevitably do throughout a season. That's what Fulham could offer there, RB are in a different situation and needing to sell, they too low balled until now when they are getting the sesko money in.

People here saying we should get a young project as third option who could potentially offer something now but might need some time to develop...then kicking off when that's exactly what the club reportedly here were suggesting would be the case to the player involved.

Meanwhile. Where we think it's worth spending we are pushing out the expense seemingly on players like Kevin. But we're balancing fee and wage budget between multiple positions and working out that puzzle. IF muniz goes who we thought would stay thats another thing to work out regarding what money goes where.

Zinchenko says last season was his worst as a professional. Will see what happens re future. Says he takes responsibility for getting limited game time and needs to work harder to earn place back.. also said he just wants to play. We'd be good for him.

I'm not "kicking off" I just think third choice is completely the wrong way of thinking about it. We should be picking who starts based on form, rather than historical performance, so I just disagree strongly with signing a player in the mindset that "oh yes, he'll be the third choice". If say Muniz stayed, he could be in awful form, I don't think Romulo would remain the third choice then?

You're gettin completely bogged down in the third party wording of a journalist and making scathing comments and scoffing at the club as a result.

Why would we lie to Romulo.? That IS the the situation, you think we should lie to players coming in and promise him what? Hell start over raul and Muniz?

Come on,I highly doubt they said to the player - look youd be a 3rd choice striker here and won't play even if ya do great in cups and training.... Course we didnt. but it would be completely true and reasonable to say, 'we see you as someone we think can be a top talent and we want to help that development with raul possibly in his last year here - those guys are obviously doing well, but all players we bring in we believe have the ability to start (something Silvas said before btw) and so if you take your chances then you'll get more minutes.'

OBVIOUSLY seeing Romulo as a project or 3rd choice to start with doesn't mean he wouldnt get minutes if playing well. Silva has literally said this before - (no point signing people who can't potentially start) Just like in past Castagne has taken tetes spot, Wilson took adamas spot, and potentially King could take ESRs/APs depsite being our "youth option". Obviously players can play their way up the pecking order

Meanwhile RB have a much easier route to a starting position given their talisman striker has been nailed on to leave all summer.

Tabby

Why are people arguing as if Romulo was the one that turned us down? Our bid was turned down, the supposed terrible pitch we gave was not a factor in any way.

Fair points, taken. Although to be honest if we had brought him in I would be expecting to see more of him than Jimenez over the course of the season.

[/quote]

Perhaps, me too, IF he stepped up in his cameos or muniz and raul hit poor form.

Anyone coming in should earn their place through training/cup appearances/minutes off bench and that's usually how we do it TBF.

Regardless, looks like he's gone to RB. And we will see if it's Taremi and who else if Muniz does depart

South Coast White

Our loss on this one IMHO.
Could have replaced RJ, kept Muniz and Romulo rotating to prove themselves.
I know it's speculation, but potentially could have doubled or  more our price paid in 1 season.
Against a potential 33 year old this was just just not one to let go.

ffc73

Dilemma for Marco & us is a good performing Raul restricts minutes for Muniz & any other young striker who may be the better in the long term.
