Good TV Shows

Never watch cartoons as they are for kids.  My son is always saying their are a lot of adult cartoon but that is just lazy or cheapskate.  If you have something serious to say use actors playing as people not cartoon version of them.

Forgot to mention that since visiting the "Cheers" bar in Boston last April, and sitting where Norm used to sit, we ordered the DVDs and ploughed through them - forgotten how great it was.

I think Ernie Pantusso ("Coach") must be one of the best ever TV characters.

And Diane Chambers one of the better looking ones...

Watched one episode and could not believe how poor the acting, script, direction and production were.

If you want comedy - find Father Ted. Surreal comedy at its best - "these cows are small, but those are far away" remains my favourite comedy line ever.

If watching just one episode as a taster then go for Speed.

peep show is a classic. New series not so much.

Anyone that saw black books on channel 4 with dylan moran a good few years ago was very funny (most of the scenes between bil bailey and moran were ad-libbed which makes it even more great to watch)

latest peep show series was great! accept for the ending... but i agree with you about black books.

It has been mentioned a lot but Breaking Bad really is exceptional.

A looker for sure was Diane...the word great is overused but Cheers was great....none of the characters maintained  normal relationships...made for fantastic viewing...every edition makes me laugh....and its in a bar.

another british cult classic is LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN
seriously wierd but totally enthralling
and very very funny

the sort of follow up was Psychoville which was even more disturbing and brilliant

The ultra violent series, "The Walking Dead", on the AMC network channel is a guilty pleasure.  So is "True Blood" (HBO) and "Curb Your Enthusiasm"  (Larry David--the creative force behind Seinfeld).  But for sheer genius, I have to go with  Louis C.K.'s show.  I think Graham Norton does an outstanding job at a variety/interview talk show.  And I miss Fawlty Towers.  The second season of X Factor in the U.S. produced an amazing talent (the best talent rarely wins these competitions)--a 13 year old  girl from Westchester, N.Y.--Carly Rose Sonenclar.  Anybody catch her performances?  In a word, wow.  I can't stand Simon Cowell and his teller-of-hard-truths persona, and the first season was a bomb.  Everything is overproduced and subtle and nuanced performances die a horrible death to pyrotechnics and flash.  But this one performer, who ended up in second place, will be a major star one day.  Even Cowell repeatedly admitted as much.  A once in a generation talent.  Here are a few hyperlinks so you can judge for yourself:  Meet Carly Rose Sonenclar - THE X FACTOR USA 2012  (23 million hits!)  Carly Rose Sonenclar Goes Unplugged - THE X FACTOR USA 2012

Mad Men is fantastic. Sherlock is excellent and one I haven't seen mentioned, and I nearly cried when it ended, was Friday Night Lights. Best show on before it finally ended. Suits is pretty good as well.

Carnivale

Now that sounds promising. :)

Depreession era travelling carnivale with a bit of a mean twist, without giving too much away.  It was one of my favourites of the bunch.

Not sure what to make of Shirley Maclaine as Martha Levinson in Downton Abbey.  Show is taking a bit of a risk.  Brits will accept an American addition only in digestible pieces.  She's always been a scenery chewer.  Maggie Smith can do no wrong in my book.  I've taken to watching old reruns of I Love Lucy.  God, that woman was a comic genius.  You probably didn't get that over there.  Physical humor tends to travel well, though, whereas cultural reference point humor--not so much.  But, then, how does one explain the success of Monty Python in North America?  There was a PBS show on Thursdays titled "Prime Minister's Questions", I think.  I used to tune in religiously to watch the Tories go after Blair over anything and everything.  And he would parry and give back as good as he got.  Blood sport.   Such an odd tableau of benchers making speeches in the form of drawn out questions, knowing full well the likely responses.  Kind of a Kabuki theatre. Fascinating to hear the muttering, hear hears, and all that, but at the bottom of it all was the take away that it was all a kind of dumb show, that no one was actually exchanging ideas or attempting to persuade the other side.  Rather, they were simply posturing.  It's no different over here, just presented a little differently, I suppose.   There was an equivalent telecast in Canada, but it was boring as hell.  Anyone notice how many English film actors are playing Americans on popular TV shows in the States now?  Minnie Driver has always been able to do a terrific Midwestern accent.  And Hugh Laurie in "House"--excellent.  But some of them--like that Underworld actress (can't remember her name)--makes the common mistake of flattening her "A"s to much, punching the vowels, and resorting to a monotone style of delivery.  Just curious--how was Meryl Streep in "Iron Lady" received?
