Quote from: F(f)CUK on July 30, 2024, 10:16:19 AMIf McTominay is brought in, I suspect that Pereira will go. I think that might be our plan.

I don't think it's that straightforward. I think they can play in the same team and fundamentally are different types of players who play different positions.

Agreed, while this season Mctominay has shown a lot better attacking sense for man utd, it's still from a much more deeper role than pereira plays for us, it's a position I still feel we kinda lack depth, iwobi can play there but he drifts a little too much for my liking while pereira shows a more constant central threat and can link play much better than iwobi.

The thing I like about pereira is his play often ghosts us up the pitch, I think it's why a lot of the time he gets stick, he plays an almost invisible part, like a little one touch pass or he makes that ghost run to open the line for another. I don't think we have any like for like with pereira and would be hard to find another as effective.

I genuinely think it's Wilson's best position too. We miss out on Pereira's press with Wilson there, but he's a way better deliverer of a ball IMO

I think Marco will want two centre midfielders. One to replace Palhinha and whilst both Lukic and Reed are decent footballers, neither create or score enough goals and that's what you need from a number 8 if we're going to progress up the league.

I think we may also have enough money for both plus a couple of others. We sold Palhinha and Mitro for around £100m and have hardly spent any of it since.

If we sign ESR for £27m, that'd leave us with £73m left. If we made an assumption that Iwobi signed for £22m out of the Mitro money, we'd still have £50m left of just Palhinha's and Mitrovic's transfer fees.. £25m allocated towards Andre.. That means, if it were maths like this, that we'd have at least another £25m, not including any additional spend we would've had for just meeting FFP regulations.. Which could add another £50m - £80m depending on who you believe.. (in addition to the circa. £25m left over we hadn't spend)

That's more than enough for a RCB, Mctominay and at the very least a couple of loans

The problem with the likes of McTominay/ESR/Chalobah from PL rivals is the wages, which are very likely to instantly be at the top of our structure.

We can probably accommodate a couple of such signings, but we'd really then need to pad out our signings from cheaper leagues (e.g. Andre, Jota Silva etc.).

I don't think it's as simple as "we have 73m to spend". The FFP calculation presumably has a say on what we can spend? It seems to be stacked against smaller teams with lower incomes.

Fwiw ESR was only on 40k pw at arsenal
Scott 60k at utd
Chalobah 50k

We had 9 players on higher wages than those last year (granted theyd potentially be wanting higher wages to take the "drop" )

For context Lukic is on 63k, highest earner Leno on 130k (followed by free signing raul on 100k!)

Shedding willian, Vini, Mbabu, Palhinha, Tosin and BDRs wages knocks around 325k off our wage bill too

I still can't get my head around how great this signing is. When you put in context Dewsbury Hall cost Chelsea what, £30m? Be interesting how both these look come the end of next season. Hopefully when one of us is in Europe  ::tongue::

That's base salary (per capology.com?), not what they actually get paid. For example, capology.com has our base wage bill for 22/23 as £62.4m vs. the £139m (Manchester Utd: £247m vs £479m) in our accounts. I understand on-costs and admin staff, but that's still quite a large variance.

Anyway, I stand by my point. We can't shop just from other PL teams as it's much more expensive and not just in transfer fees. We need to balance it with purchases from cheaper leagues, so I don't believe we would/should sign Chalobah, McTominay & ESR only 2 of the 3. That said we are linked with such players (& have a decent record over the last few years, such as Bassey & Palhinha), so it's more about expectation management.

He's certainly an interesting one. I've cool'd on him a bit. His athleticism is brilliant, like Reed's, but he just feels so limited whenever I see him now. All run and pump but his technical ability feels so lacking for a player at that price range. Perhaps wedged between Andre and Pereria, he'd be a dream signing, let them dictate play and he just runs and does retention.....but that feels like a high price.

But hey, if Silva wants him and he wants to drop down to our level (Athletico, not Chelsea)

I am not convinced Gallagher is much of an improvement on Reed, aside from being 5 years younger.

No way I'd consider paying more than €20m for Gallagher, let alone €35m.

I thought Gallagher was excellent for Chelsea last season, the pick of their midfield, and I fancied him to play a big role in the Euros. It's hard to say whether it was Gallagher, Southgate, the tempo of international football or anything else, but he looked so limited in the Euros.

What a shame- I reckon he's got more to give than playing in some third rate league infront of few fans.
I thought he had more about him (in light of him paying off his Arsenal contract and seeming to be not all about money).
Perhaps Silva has had a word with him about how much he'd be used. I'm sure a player (TC) said at the end of last season that he'd be missed, as if they all knew.

Unsuprising really, seemed his time with us was up with ESR and Sess inbound + Iwobi good out there and Godo too, Plenty LW talent herr to not worry about Willian. Grateful for his contribution but time to part ways.

Thing is, we don't really know what's going on. He'll be 36 come the start of the season, he might of been feeling drained towards the backend and just thinks, his body won't make another pre season let alone a taxing full season in the most competitive league in the world. It does happen and peoples bodies feel the drop off, so perhaps a year or two jaunt getting paid mental sums before retiring is the right decision.

Was amazing to see a player of his quality, at his age, shine as he has for us. A real pleasure so good luck to the lad.

Talent and numbers, yes, but Willian is top level and has been brilliant for us for 2 seasons.

I notice that Willian is still on the team list (unlike Rodak, BDR etc), while Sess has been added to the list of defenders, not midfielders or forwards.
