For me it's fairly simple, are we confident enough in them that they will be starters next season or do we need to invest.

It's not a matter of right or wrong though. Just opinion and as I said, I don't share your or others optimism, especially for a side trying to push through top 10 to Europe.

But ultimately, we'll see I guess.

I agree it's not my preference for the season as a whole but if we're relying on Lukic, TC and Reed for August while we get the other guys in I can live with it.

Quote from: ElRay on August 04, 2024, 12:49:58 PMIf we have moved on from Andre, hopefully we move onto the next target very quickly.

Palhinha's replacement/replacement's really isn't one we can't afford to wait around for. Especially if it's a pivot we want to replace him, would really need at least one of them in before opening day to start developing a relationship with players who are already here.

It's not ideal but a Lukic, Reed/Cairney midfield is enough to be competitive while the McT and Andre sagas are rumbling on
l am not worried as Lukic can do the DM role ,no one can replace JP to same level.

I personally don't really share this optimism. That's a significant downgrade to a really important part of our side and the odd games fine but anything more than 2-3 games is risky and something a side like ours trying to compete for European places can't really afford.

Still optimistic but I really hope we pull our fingers out soon.
you have every right we differ in our views but still want the best for the club .even though I'm right lol😉

I think we were working above our league with Palhinha. His contribution was above our average, and losing him normalizes things - not necessarily in a good way, but more so in a factual way. Lukic is not a 1:1 replacement, but he can do the job. This is why I'm happy with our signings so far that are going for the quality of those areas that Palhinha had to recover from. Such as when we didn't have the quality to finish off an attack and as a result Palhinha had to stop the counter, etc.

The Andre signing won't necessarily raise us up to Palhinha standards either. It will give competition between he, Lukic and Reed, but in no way is Andre a Palhinha representation. This is why I've been pushing for someone like Morten Frendrup from Bologna. He is in Top 5 of total tackles, plays in the physical Serie A and has good passing range. Shorter framed just like Andre, but has a motor that does not stop. I've watched Andre many times and many times I've seen him slow down and fall asleep in his cover. He has to make a lot of desperate challenges, mainly blocks, because of this. His on the ball quality is supreme though and being a student of Diniz style of play (relational, tiki-taka) that's no surprise that it comes easy to him when teammates stay wider and we're not trying to pull defenders to absorb space.

Just going to say again, if we want an actual Palhinha replacement, it'd be Morten Frendrup:

Can't speak for others, but I definitely think we do need to sign a replacement for Palhinha (not necesarily a like for like because that would be very difficult anyway, but a dm/cm). I'm just saying we don't necessarily need two midfielders, as Lukic, Reed and Cairney can all do a decent job there. One dm/cm and a rcb are needed as soon as possible, everything else isn't that important.

Yes he did, second half...

Let this sink in our starting central midfield at the moment is going to be Lukic and Cairney complete shambles by the club . Joa was always leaving and we need two players to replace him and we haven't done anything completely ridiculous. We have no physicality in the centre of the pitch we will be cannon fodder other teams will walk through our midfield. Florentino luis or Andre plus Mctominay go get them 🤬

You're taking the news that Brentford's new striker won't play until the end of the year and nobody wants Toney quite well then?

Im personally not on that train, Reed and Lukic make us competitive. If earlier comments made it seem like we'd be a walk over, my words were sloppy. Margins are tight in this league and draws become losses, wins becomes draws and vice versa at such extreme margins, that id of preferred a replacement in by now but again, it is what it is.

Just one of those occasions where I hope we don't start sloppy and regret it come late next season when we're chasing a European a lot (or hopefully cementing it!)

All I'll say is yesterday Fluminense did sign Facundo Bernal (20) DM for €3.3m, could it be that they now have a replacement for Andre.

The loss of Mitro should have been devastating. In the end we just adapted. The same can be said for Palhinha. Yes we need strengthening but we will never find another Pal so we will hopefully adapt with his loss too. This doesn't mean we don't need or wont buy in players but they will never be as successful at breaking up play.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

I can stand my own despair but not others hope

I absolutely hear what you are saying. But I don't think we are in the same position as when Mitrovic left. Losing Palhinha is completely different, we absolutely need two central midfielders this window, one defensive minded one and another more forward thinking. We will of course adapt, but for me, Palhinha had a profound impact on the team, more so than Mitrovic.

We struggled to find the solutions and adapt for half a season. People forget that.

Palhinha is one of the best DMs in Europe. And atm we're reliant on Lukic, Cairney and Reed, which isn't enough for me.

We need two more midfielders, one CM and an DM. One of them get injured, or one injured and the other suspended and we struggle massively.

Plus, with all respect in the world, cairney is slower and whilst he's done better in adapting to the PL and we need other options.

Look out for three MoTM performances vs United now!  :slap:

I thoght Cairney put in some great tackles against Benfica, almost like he had some tips from Joao

I'd hoped he might find a championship loan after a good season in league 1 last year.

Nonetheless, hopefully he'll be part of a promotion chasing team, which will be good for him. Great that he'll be getting minutes.

Good luck to him!

Not too gassed about the Harris loan. He should be stepping up.

This maybe the conspiracy theorist in me but this Harris to Brum loan move has the we'll-give-you-Harris-on-loan-so-you'll-leave-us-the-F-alone-regarding-Stansfield vibe to it

I can see how Harris may be an appeasement here. Although it's interesting that Stansfield didn't get minutes against Benfica when I think he did in the behind closed doors games.

Hopefully Brum stay off him but somehow I doubt it.

One thing I'd say re: Harris is while I agree it would be nice to have him test himself in the champ, playing in a potentially championship-winning team would be a great experience for the lad.

I would suggest watching Andre more, he's not much different than Lukic. He's a smaller framed player compared to the Serbian. Lukic does all the same things. I don't think the pursuit of Andre is a replacement of Palhinha, it's to increase the competition levels between Andre, Lukic and Reed.

I think the quality of our wingers is more important. Iwobi is feeling it, Adama is healthy and now we have ESR who can play either wing, an 8 or 10. That's a significant upgrade over BDR. Pereira led in assists and key passes, and there were many times that either our wingers or strikers did not get on the end of those key passes. The fact that we're going a higher quality route with someone like ESR says something and I hope we continue to go that route so we don't waste our attacks. McTominay would be another significant upgrade and huge competition for the existing midfield.

Another 90mins and a great performance from Andre as they win 1-0 .

Does feel like they're content to ride it out till the end of the window and keep him as long as they can as they're getting out the relegation zone with him coming back from injury.

A shame if it doesnt work out
