Andre is there most important player so can see why there playing hardball.

LC

If we can land both Andre and McTominay and Muniz continues to perform then we could be challenging top 7-8 this season.

hovewhite

Will help harris stepping up to men's football starting in a physical league and brings good experience also helping his Wales ambitions.

Lukic does all the same things. I don't think the pursuit of Andre is a replacement of Palhinha, it's to increase the competition levels between Andre, Lukic and Reed.
How is "dont think is a replacement for Palhinha but to increase competition" for players that are actually still here is in any way contradicting. A replacement would increase the competion.

I think it has been stated by several, several times, that a André is not Palhinhas replacement like for like. Never has been.  I think when people on here goes on about replacing Palhinha, it means we need to replace some of the things that will be missing (tackling, strength,  aerial threat) as well as getting something that we havent had before, which is what André offers. We spread the money on two players, getting more depth but also more quality for our Palhinha money. Similar as to how West Ham replaced Rice.

We lack players in the middle of the park and are due for an upgrade there. Lukic and Reed are great, but we need two players on each position - which we currently lack- and if we now have a chance to improve that area then we should. André/Lukic/McTominay(orwhoever)/Reed would be a great set up.

I think the quality of our wingers is more important. Iwobi is feeling it, Adama is healthy and now we have ESR who can play either wing, an 8 or 10. That's a significant upgrade over BDR. Pereira led in assists and key passes, and there were many times that either our wingers or strikers did not get on the end of those key passes. The fact that we're going a higher quality route with someone like ESR says something and I hope we continue to go that route so we don't waste our attacks. McTominay would be another significant upgrade and huge competition for the existing midfield.
He is a lot different than Lukic!! Strong technically very good protects the defence and sees the game in front of him. Have watched him numerous amounts of time and personally he is a far better footballer.

Does feel like they're content to ride it out till the end of the window and keep him as long as they can as they're getting out the relegation zone with him coming back from injury.

A shame if it doesnt work out
Fluminense did sign Facundo Bernal (20) DM for €3.3m on Saturday, could it be that they now have a replacement for Andre.

Fulham haven't given up on André yet. There is confidence that the deal will get done by the end of the window.

Talks with Villa will continue this week for Diego Carlos. Fulham believe a deal can be done before they play Man Utd.

Mctimonay is proving to be a bit tougher than expected. The player although open to the move still isn't convinced & Man Utd could hold out until after Fulham play them.

Quote from: Lighthouse on August 04, 2024, 06:38:07 PMThe loss of Mitro should have been devastating. In the end we just adapted. The same can be said for Palhinha. Yes we need strengthening but we will never find another Pal so we will hopefully adapt with his loss too. This doesn't mean we don't need or wont buy in players but they will never be as successful at breaking up play.

We struggled to find the solutions and adapt for half a season. People forget that.

Palhinha is one of the best DMs in Europe. And atm we're reliant on Lukic, Cairney and Reed, which isn't enough for me.

We need two more midfielders, one CM and an DM. One of them get injured, or one injured and the other suspended and we struggle massively.

Plus, with all respect in the world, cairney is slower and whilst he's done better in adapting to the PL and we need other options.

Agree

We were shockingly impotent last year until we frankly got lucky with Muniz finding form. I think the failure to replace Mitrovic was the primary reason for our ultimately underwhelming league finish and were it not for Muniz, it would have been worse.

This season will go the same way or worse if our CMs are Lukic, Cairney and Reed.

We've made some great signings in Bassey, Iwobi, Smith Rowe et al but it's one step forward, two steps back if we're going to sell our best player each season and not even attempt to replace them.

Face facts we are not going to replace Palhinha with a player of equivalent strength, if such a player was available he would probably be at Munich now and Palhinha would still be at the Cottage.
We have to reinforce the team in other areas, the midfield needs strengthening to improve our goalscoring rate, ten matches last season without a goal.

You replace him in the aggregate and potentially change styles. As had been said so many times now, if we brought in Andre and McTom you'd be replacing Pal in a number of areas across two players. Not a like for like, but two players with different skill sets that have the potential to influence our play positively without requiring a juggernaught like Palinha to tackle nearly twice or three times as much as anyone else.

The idea that we simply can't replace him so we'll be settling with what we have and add some squad depth is an insane backwards step for that midfield and one that, based on every metric of rumour we've had, isn't likely to be true.

Given Lukic is wearing 20 at the minute I reckon Willian isnt coming back, would be weird to be wearing a different number in pre season to that which you're going to wear during the season. Muniz is wearing 9 which was shown as his new number and Iwobi is now 17 i think and he is wearing that.

hovewhite

JW I think Willian has not signed on so his history.

In a recent Athletic article on ESR it's suggested that Willian is not coming back.  So seems he's gone.

I don't really understand why people get so annoyed by this. It is the Silly Season thread, it is full of speculation and nonsense. You can either take what posters say as gospel (very unlikely), enjoy it as the "gossip" it is or ignore it completely.

You don't need to continually call people out, just scroll on. I for one  enjoy it all. (Except all the quote on quote on quote, which takes up pages!)

For whats its worth - just chatting with a colleague who is an arsenal s/t holder.  In his words " gutted ESR has left and (big caveat) if he stays fit we have a hell of a player who will get 10-20 goals/assists easily"

You're not miles off, but Lukic is actually poor taking the ball off of CBs with his back to the opposition and being able to progress play - which is basically Andre's super skill.

Lukic is good in space with a solid range of passing, but we are crying out for someone with ability to beat the press and transition into attack in midfield areas (it was the same last year in that we needed an attacker who was able to do likewise, offering for a pass, turning and drive forward with the ball, and Iwobi came in with ability to do just that and made a massive difference).
