Quote from: The Cravenette on August 05, 2024, 11:37:11 AMI don't really understand why people get so annoyed by this. It is the Silly Season thread, it is full of speculation and nonsense. You can either take what posters say as gospel (very unlikely), enjoy it as the "gossip" it is or ignore it completely.

You don't need to continually call people out, just scroll on. I for one  enjoy it all. (Except all the quote on quote on quote, which takes up pages!)

I agree that those claiming to be insiders shouldn't be told not to post. Equally, however, I think those reading their posts should, if they feel strongly about it, be allowed to say they don't believe the content to be accurate.

When I post for this forum, I do so on the understanding that other members can reasonably dispute what I say. I've yet to see a convincing argument as to why 'ITKs' should be exempted from any sort of negative reaction.

It's usually 'because they get stick, they won't come back and post anymore'. Does feel like ITK's generally seem to be really thin skinned about it, but hey.

Another random link arrives: Kone

Good box to box midfielder, not really a DM but would be good sat next to one, more of a McTominay than an Andre for reference to other posters who don't know much about him

From my point of view, I really appreciate ITK's, I don't see value in proven chancers. Equally understand that triggering a big discussion about it just adds to the noise, and just ignoring it and scrolling on is probably the solution as others seem to enjoy it all.

To be fair I'm not ITK and never will be, but I can see it being a bit of a thankless task when you're trying to give genuine updates that don't materialise and people question them retrospectively. Some ITK's like LVPBT (I think that's their account) posted some spot on stuff and then got harassed a bit and stopped which was a shame a bit like WSW, but I guess it could come down to quantity/quality of posts and what people prefer to hear

Yeah West Sussex White was great on here, you could tell from his tone that he was just a normal person just trying to help out. Not a bulletin of spurious facts that are derived from already existing reports.

I appreciate the posts to be honest, but the amount of times the ITK's get it wrong, get some minor stick, write a pity post then don't bother over the years resulting in chats like this, is a bit boring now.

And that's someone who doesn't care about accuracy rate of said posters. It's just quite boring.

We're replacing a 30-something year old defender with a 24-year-old and then replacing a 26-year-old defender who left with a 32-year-old?

No complaints on Matip on a free from me, we already have Diop to compete and are developing Luca DF in the wings whos hotly tipped there. May give us scope to send him on loan and see if he can step up next year.

I think that's who he means, though Tim is 36, so slightly older. Matip seems to be one of the players we may be scouting out to cover our bases. I can't imagine he's our first choice option.

Matip is a top class defender and would be a good signing, especially on a free transfer. If he signs we'll have him and Diop as our right sided centre backs so I fail to see the problem. If the right long term replacement isn't available this window and Matip is then it makes complete sense.

Plus picking Matip up on a free would allow us to spend the rest of our budget elsewhere- hopefully on two top class midfielders.

Quote from: Matt10 on August 04, 2024, 11:39:04 PMI would suggest watching Andre more, he's not much different than Lukic. He's a smaller framed player compared to the Serbian. Lukic does all the same things. I don't think the pursuit of Andre is a replacement of Palhinha, it's to increase the competition levels between Andre, Lukic and Reed.
You're not miles off, but Lukic is actually poor taking the ball off of CBs with his back to the opposition and being able to progress play - which is basically Andre's super skill.

Lukic is good in space with a solid range of passing, but we are crying out for someone with ability to beat the press and transition into attack in midfield areas (it was the same last year in that we needed an attacker who was able to do likewise, offering for a pass, turning and drive forward with the ball, and Iwobi came in with ability to do just that and made a massive difference).

I haven't seen Lukic give up the ball too often in those positions. I've watched Andre's last 3 matches and he isn't pressured like that at all in the same manner. Fluminese just don't play out the back to those levels like they used to under Diniz. They definitely don't play out the back the way we do either. Their CB receives a layoff from the keeper, who then decides if they'll play it out wide in the air or ground. Andre is sat in the middle surrounded by 2-3 players that are prepared for the vertical pass to him that will never come.

For advancing the ball with dribbling, it's pretty rare for Andre to do this. Again, I'm going off of recent form and the last 3 matches. He's smart with the ball and plays very safe, but can switch it up and play direct. He breaks the lines on I counted 3 total times in 3 matches, including the one yesterday where he needed to hold it in stoppage time.

I think we are recruiting him for his Diniz play and knowing he is very comfortable in tighter positions. But Fluminese don't play that way anymore, and now he's not really shining in the same manner. I still want him badly, don't get me wrong, but if we walked away from the deal and Lukic started as the 6, I'd be fine with it. For less money we could go for Kone as recently rumored. Or go for McTominay at the 8 and keep Lukic as the 6.

Bassey the warrior

If we sign McTominay this surely signals the end for Reed or Lukic, they are all 8's.

Lukic has always looked better as an 8, playing alongside Palhinha.

Totally agree.

I'm surprised at the posts claiming we need to sign two players as replacements for Joao. Why? We can only play one player in his position.

If we sign Andre and McTominay or 2 alternatives, surely Reed has to leave to try and gain more minutes elsewhere. I like Reed, however, and only believe we need one replacement for DM.

That would leave us with Andre (or whoever), Lukic, Reed, Cairney, Iwobi, Pereira and ESR who can all compete for the respective DM, CM and AM roles.

Seven players for 3 positions whilst  ESR and Iwobi will also be options for LW and RW respectively along with Traore, Wilson, Stansfield (if he stays) and even Sess at LW in front of Jedi. Stansfield could also play the 10 as an option.

We have a plethora of options already in the squad so unless Stansfield and or Reed depart I just don't see how we need two replacements for Joao.

I think a DM and RCB with no further outgoings (other than loans for U21s) and we're there.

Deeping_white

Matip makes some sense in fairness. He's maybe losing a bit of pace, but he's a good enough defender to adjust his positioning accordingly, and with someone like Bassey next to him who is very quick for a CB, it would give him cover. Also from a budget perspective it means you can go all out on CM's and forwards, plus he's able to operate as a ball playing CB who all of our current CB's can learn a lot from
