We need physicality in midfield and someone who is good at defending and attacking from set pieces. So we definitely need two players to replace Joa.

We're replacing a 30-something year old defender with a 24-year-old and then replacing a 26-year-old defender who left with a 32-year-old?

Matip is a top class defender and would be a good signing, especially on a free transfer. If he signs we'll have him and Diop as our right sided centre backs so I fail to see the problem. If the right long term replacement isn't available this window and Matip is then it makes complete sense.

Plus picking Matip up on a free would allow us to spend the rest of our budget elsewhere- hopefully on two top class midfielders.
that makes complete sense.

Matip would be an interesting pick-up but there must be reservations in regards to that injury he had? You would think a few more higher profile teams have had a sniff around him? Could be inspirational Could be a disaster not sure there is an in-between?

Jules

I would be very pleased to get Matip on a free. Gives Diop competition and is a top level experienced defender. I'd be looking to loan De Figs to a top half championship club to get him minutes and get him ready for the next season with us if he does well.

If he's fit and passes the medicial I think it's a risk worth taking, especially as we have Diop in that position already.

South Coast White

According to sky sports, he's on his way to Leyverkusen.

Always liked Matip. Felt that van Dijk got all the praise and that resulted in Matip being under the radar.

may be worth to note, PSG have just announced Neves, freeing up Ugarte to Man Utd, making McTominy surplus to requirements?

O'Riley would need to be fairly deeply into the idea of the EPL 'best league in the World' shtick to prefer Brighton (or even Fulham) over Celtic.

Unless he's determined to avoid any more of those February evening Ross County clashes on the shores of the Firth of Cromarty....which would be understandable.
