O'Riley would need to be fairly deeply into the idea of the EPL 'best league in the World' shtick to prefer Brighton (or even Fulham) over Celtic.

Unless he's determined to avoid any more of those February evening Ross County clashes on the shores of the Firth of Cromarty....which would be understandable.

Don't think Celtic have that much pulling power. They are ahead of the Championship for sure, but they're unlikely to make it out of CL groups these days. They've sold their star players to Crystal Palace and Brentford fairly recently.

We're replacing a 30-something year old defender with a 24-year-old and then replacing a 26-year-old defender who left with a 32-year-old?

Matip is a top class defender and would be a good signing, especially on a free transfer. If he signs we'll have him and Diop as our right sided centre backs so I fail to see the problem. If the right long term replacement isn't available this window and Matip is then it makes complete sense.

Plus picking Matip up on a free would allow us to spend the rest of our budget elsewhere- hopefully on two top class midfielders.
that makes complete sense.
Matip is 33 in a few days time, I thought we were looking to lower the age of our squad and build for the future, unless he is only given a one year contract with an option to extend?

Talks still ongoing with United for McTominay according to Sky Sports an hour ago....

Surely Ugarte is a replacement for Casemiro who is rumoured to be on his way out?

Good news! Hope he can get some gametime. I liked his one appearance in the cup last year.

Slightly surprised - isn't he a full Colombian national team player now? Or at least has got full caps for the national team. Surely that level is higher and he should be at a Championship team..?

Could be a question of trying to figure out how to boost flexibility with budget for Mctominay and Andre - instead of spending a proper amount to get in a RCB, he could be a good short term fix and would free up transfer spend. He's highly thought of at Liverpool.

To be fair, all of our existing CB's Ream aside are comfortably in their 20's, and two years of Matip gives us more time to identify a long term target akin to Bassey. The other thing to consider is most of our squad leaders in Ream, BDR etc. have left/are leaving this summer so he also brings something intangible to the dressing room in leadership and experience which will be as valuable as his on field capabilities

Interest in Casemiro from the Middle East has waited so to sign Ugarte they still need to move someone on

TBh it's more likely to see the end of Cairney.

We need four CM's and Cairney is more of an attack minded CM, which is what people are suggesting McTominay will be coming in for if he does, Reed is more defensive in my book and lukic is neutral. We need four CM's and currently have three, but also need one more in a DM capacity. Realistically with Cairney's age, he needs to reignite his ability level a bit this season to extend his fulham career in any significant way.

With ESR in, Pereira and Iwobi, all of whom are younger, Cairney's place in the squad is coming more and more into question. Nostalgia aside.

Go through all the positions and he's got the least reason.

I'd be all over getting Matip. Quality player and if he stays fit improves us. Salary will prob be £100k a week but we were offering Tosin to stay and he's way better than Tosin so just better off all round with no amortised fee. Issues with all other centre back options at the mo and I don't think any of the rumoured ones are better than Matip if he's fit. He has a better heading duels win percentage than Tosin and all the others as well and Tosin could be a big loss there as he dominated in the air last year.

Got to remember we are having to try and fill 5 or 6 positions this year and we are trying to go big to improve on at least 4 of those. If we do that with perm transfers we are in a pretty brilliant position next year as who will actually be out of contract? Tete I think but not sure if anyone else is? Essentially then Matip for a year or two is a no brainer to me as we have 5 or 6 to fill this year and may only have 1 or 2 next year plus maybe a massive upgrade in 1 position. This is another reason I don't think we'll get a new striker this year. Can see how the current 3 do and then could go big next year if they do not perform well enough as will not need to spread the budget around nearly as much.

Completely agree but think Cairney is kept as a fifth to be the impact sub he was most of last season. The other 4 will compete for a starting spot and need 4 for comps and injuries. Without JP I don't think Marco will start Cairney as not enough protection. He'll bring him on however if we are losing in the 8 for the last 30 mins or poss even in the 10 if we are winning to help control the game. So we would need Reed, Lukic, McT and Andre to fight for a starting spot/cover the starting spot for injuries and Cairney will be impact sub I reckon.

This is the best guy for MLS stuff
I feel like he's at the right age.  Sad (in a way) that MLS has a place for defenders in their late 30s, but Ream is a bit of an exception to the rule - his ability to play well at this age is amazing.  He's slow for the league, but he won't get punished as much here for that because the quality of touch by the attackers just isn't there.  And I live in Charlotte and have season tickets, so now I get to see him play a lot.  Which makes me happy.

If this transfer happens then you're in for a treat.  Tim is so talented; great header, calm on the ball, ability to play out from the back, good tackler etc.

Know what you mean but given that he's had pretty much zero first team game time anywhere I like league two for him this season. As a defender he also might need to bulk up a bit before regularly playing at a higher level.

suspect itll be : league 2 year...  if it goes well championship loan next year, then challenge for first team at 22 as castagne and Tete will be/have moved on. Agree a league 1 loan woulda been nice but hell likely be a nailed on starter there at least

At his age he just needs to gain confidence and game time playing in physical environments to build his strength and mature.
