Summer Silly Season Transfer Thread 2024

The whole Andre issue is very strange indeed - seems like we have been pursuing him for a year or so only to pull out just as they are forced to sell? Not sure I believe the reports we have told them we are no longer interested - there was talk earlier in the window that we wanted both Andre and McTominay so perhaps the Berge signing doesn't rule us out. Would be very annoying if he now went to somewhere like Forest (assuming he fulfils his potential).

LC

I just saw on skysports website that Ipswich have agreed a deal for Jack Clarke worth £15m that could rise to £20m. I think we should go in for him at that price.

hopper

Agree on the above, feels like it's got Forest written all over it.

Shame not to get this one sorted, if it works out we have a great player and possible high sell on fee based on the potential people have spoken about.

Not sure we have the defensive cover we need in midfield.

Isn't that normal and the healthy default?

22 - 11x2 in each position, plus 3 academy?

I wonder how much of Sterling's wages Chelsea would cover. It would have to be about 60% covered for a club like us to go in for him. Would be a great signing for a single season if we can't find a permanent signing in that position.

itombomb

I still think we have the headroom to get at least a couple of other £15-30m players in, especially if we shift Vinicius/Mbabu and structure deals sensibly.

Yes it is all more complicated with amortisation and salaries, but our net spend over the last 3 seasons (including Anderson and the Carvalho sell on fee) is about £60m, and several of the highest earners in the team left us this Summer. On net spend specifically, the equivalent for a variety of clubs around our size sees Forest -£210m, Bournemouth -£210m & Brentford -£130m*. Even Southampton, have a net spend of around £50m so far, and had the year out of the PL with their TV income reduced down to 55%.

Obviously we shouldn't buy players for the sake of it, but if we can improve the team we should, and we really do need to sign more players who have the potential to see their value increase.

*though admittedly that will bump up when they offload Toney to Saudi.

Wolves interested in Andre but price way off as it was with us seemingly

Utd interested in case ugarte fails.

Will be somewhat humurous if after all this he goes for way cheaper come the end of the window...And we'll have actually done the thing people want of making a firm high offer early (that no ones matched to date) telling them like it or leave it, not capitulating 10m over what we think is fair...moving on and eventually sealing another target only 1 game into the season having been in talks for the last month...
Only for andres price to drop in last week of the window when we in past may have waited to see what deals we can get then... which usally infuriates people as a strategy 😂

Wouldnt that be sods law! We'd all have to see the funny side if so.

Anyway, focus back on Berge and rooting for him now. Love his enthusiasm for the club and nice to have a strong scandi duo in town. Cant wait for Ipswich away to hopefully see em get sone minutes as cant make Leicester. Up the Fulham!

I mean, just because they were reportedly asking for 30/35m, doesn't mean that's what we'd have had to pay. Bit like you claiming a couple of days ago that we'd have had to pay £30m for Berg earlier in the window because that's what Burnley initially quoted United. Pretty sure you can actually negotiate prices down in June / July without having to wait until late August. If it emerges that Andre was indeed our first choice and the deal fell through solely because we couldn't bridge the gap from our 20/25m bid to their 30/35m ask, I'd consider that a serious commercial failure. It would also undermine your summer-long argument that waiting these things out delivers success in the end, and that it's worth waiting for the "right" player. I strongly hope there was more to it than than just the fee.
This is a pigs might fly narrative.

You're "pretty" sure that fees can be negotiated down before August, without any evidence. Then suggest that we should pay, the reportedly spiraling asking price, to sign Andre, without there being any other interest in him at the time.
Before adding the IF that seems to suggest we're commercially inept.

I'm not sure how Dawley New Town economics works but in my world we'd go bust if we didn't have the good business sense to walk away from a bad deal. It's also the case that MS is not going to tell anyone who his targets were or what the acceptable fees was.

I think it is though reasonable to suggest, from comments, that he's a happy bunny and owns the decisions the club is making.
It could be better, but it's not a fantasy:

That drum has certainly been banged all summer. Let it go . We will never know how much he was or was not wanted , or if 5mill was the stumbling block , and frankly who cares? He could easily have turned out to be a seri or anguissa type of signing. No other clubs seem that bothered ....

Just a few random throwbacks to where it all began with two players as I came across them on twitter and one is obviously relevant, whilst the other was interesting in terms of how fans initially reacted to the news we'd signed mitro..

1.3k likes for the announcement of signing Mitro on loan is very low by most signings standards.. turned out great though.

Maybe the thermometer's still in his mouth. We all know how tough the Fulham medical is.

Doesn't need to be announced prior to midday just registered by midday, we all hope it is announced as soon as possible though.

Expect it to be announced today I'd imagine. If we want him in the squad for Leicester, then he'll be announced this morning. If we're not rushing it, then by end of the day.

He was reported to be having a medical with us two days ago, so that would've ended latest yesterday, and I imagine contract would've been done and media duties yesterday too.

Think most are feeling confident this will get done, though not over till the fat lady sings. Andersen wants to come back and has played here before, which would suggest it'll happen.

I still really want to see Andre through the door - the more I read up about him statistically the better he seems and fits a need we have in our team... I appreciate chances are looking slim now and many are happy with Berge in, but still.

A front line option in, and maybe one surprise signing. We'll see.

As long as registered by midday he can play tomorrow, can be announced any time as long as that registration is done. I would take it being announce at 14:00 tomorrow as long as he is registered.

Looks like Andre is not happening from the few twitter feeds above, I guess if they are true the club moved on and got someone that Marco wanted or is ok with having. I am assuming the focus has moved on to a forward and maybe some other signings
