Quote from: Hugh Janus on June 09, 2026, 06:03:25 PMIf we get Kieran I would be pretty content with that. I see similarities to Marco. His stock is a bit lower than where it was. A promising young coach who will hopefully be backed in the market in the same way Marco was.

He plays a good brand of footie. Is good at working with young techie players.

Hopefully we get Liam Delap over the summer too.

We could do a lot worse.

it'd be a dissapointing hire for me - Marco had managed in the PL and in some instances done quite well, though ultimately jumped ship too much.

McKenna has never succeeded or done much in the PL - which means he could just get us relegated. Seems like such an unecsessary risk to take, especially given what Marco's done with the club and the relatively strong position he's left us in.

One season in Premier, with an average Ipswich side, who some of the big names would have struggled to keep them up.

let's look at the alternatives though for clubs in a similar position or size to us...

Palace have replaced Glasner with Bruno Lage who took Lens to 2nd in Ligue 1 and won them their first trophy last year.

Bournemouth have replaced Iraola with Marco Rose who had consistently got his team into the top four in Germany.

Both have taken the positivity given to them by their managers and are seemingly building on it (though time will obviously tell)

And Fulham - we'd be hiring someone who's been promoted from the league below twice and got relegated from the PL in the time he was up before.

That's the difference that makes him dissappointing.

Bournemouth have never won a major trophy, and only finished 5 points ahead of us last season (yes in Europe but for first time). Their ground is smaller, they're on the coast instead of one of the most liveable cities on the planet (which admittedly isn't everyone's cup of tea - though their replacement has lived in cities).

We were shy of Europe by 2 POINTS!! - we really should be being ambitious and looking up and for someone who can take us to that next level. Pochettino would be in that catergory.. McKenna as decent a manager as he may be, is not the answer for where we as a club are now.

What we need, and I fear is lacking, is an ownership who can and will invest in a timely enough manner to build out a strong squad. Right now, we're on the brink of losing Wilson and Raul (who's just signed a two year contract with an option for a third at Wolves), who combined scored 19 goals (out of 47 total - 40% of our goals last season).

More than anything we desperately need someone who can take the club by the scruff of the kneck and push on, and that needs to be a manager who has calibre and a reputation the players can respect and feels on par to or better than Marco, which in my humble opinion won't be McKenna.

With McKenna, and having lost Raul and potentially Wilson, we'd be looking closer to relegation than up the table.

Well put,but losing Raul and Wilson, surely there will be signings to replace them, and hopefully better than them.

Who we sign, as in my opinion proven by Marco, is largely dependent on the budget and manager. Marco, in my mind, attracted the likes of ESR, Kevin, Bobb. Players really liked Marco, they believed in him and his management and tactical style. He was developing a reputation for developing players, for playing a hard to beat and attractive style of football and showing fairness for players - keeping Cairney, signing Sessegnon etc, giving King his debut, allowing players to recover etc, and was consistently getting us as a club competing in the european spots.

For me, his undoing was largely squad depth and transfer activity. Had we got Pepi signed in Jan, or when he had come and had a supposed medical only for us not to want to sign him from during the season (I get it, but fundamentally proved to be a pointless intellectual arguement as Pepi went on to finish the season strongly and is now at the world cup with the US), then we could quite have easily ended last season in Europe instead of Bournemouth or whoever else, or at least given Marco the belief and impetus that transfers and squad building was going in the right direction.

I don't see those qualities (yet!) in McKenna, and I don't want us to take the step back in the hope he may show them tbh.

I want someone with more credibility at the top of the game who can galvanise and help the club push on!

Completely agree, General. I'm getting post-Woy and Hughes vibes again.

Add in that the clubs hierarchy are considering spending £8m just to break Mkennas contract, when we go into such lengths to reduce transfer fees is additionally mind-boggling. Sign up Pepi and get in a manager without paying £8m

Re Pepi: TK said in interview both he and Marco had reservations after the medical and TK still harbours those thoughts so very unlikely Pepi to FFC.

Yeah, but whilst he's claiming that Pepi has made a full recovery, finished the season banging in goals for PSV and is now at the world cup with USMNT and Marco has left the club, so I wouldn't jump on what TK has said as being a 100% accurate representation of what happened or the truth behind it. It's quite clear that Pepi is physically fine at the moment and doing well, and Marco's main gripe with the club was how it did transfers - which he acknowledged publicly and even TK said was an area they didn't always see eye to eye on.

McKenna has shortened again to 1/5. Sounds nailed on.

Parker isn't even on oddschecker...?

Bassey the warrior

Can't see us paying £8m for McKenna, but if he does come I'd be willing to gove him a chance. Some question his record but don't forget Silva took Hull down and was fired from Everton when they were in the relegation zone.

I've not seen a lot of Ipswich, so no strong feelings about McKenna either way.

as I said back when it happened. There were no "known" issues with the medical.
I don't know what happened but I feel there was something else at play. Just my opinion.

I was led to believe that something showed up on his medical that could cause a problem going forward. A bit like what happened with John Carew.

I'm fine with us not taking McKenna. Not without risk. Big fee of £8m reported which would impact our transfer budget. I do hope however that the club has someone decent in the pipeline. As long as its not Parker, Frank, Rosenior, Lampard or Dyche!
