Why oh why are we linked with Kalvin Phillips? He's been absolutely diabolical and not fit to even lace Palhinha's shoes.

Also, who's this James we've been offered?

James Rodriguez, formerly of porto, monaco real Madrid everton and others...good player years back but 33 odd years old now and fell away a fair bit in form

The Colombian James Rodriguez who played for Everton I think. Had a renaissance with the national team over the summer

Quote from: McBrideOfFrankenstein on July 24, 2024, 01:29:58 AMI was pushing for Summerville last summer and I'd still take him at the higher price. Reminds me of prime Raheem Sterling. And Silva is a much better manager than his last two.

I wouldn't back end of last season he was playing for himself a move and very selfish with his play only passing if he thought he was going to get it back, probably cost leeds promotion because of it

Good luck Cody. He seems a bit old for braces (my 14 year old daughter should be done with them in a couple of months) but hey ho.

Thanks. Yeah, we do not need another old player unless he's as good as Willian.

What is the point in commenting on his appearance/braces? So unnecessary.

30m (rising to 35) for ESR
10m Jota Silva
10m Mengi
25m Andre
2m ballo toure (or another loan LB deal)
18m Rios.

120m and call it a day.

Thatd be my list from those linked.

Hm. As much as I'd love that to be true, even if we did have £120m in the kitty to spend without breaching FFP (which I don't think we do), the new rules coming next season means we have to achieve player related costs (transfer fees and wages) being 85% of our revenue.

I can't remember the source (apologies) but I'm sure I read somewhere that last year it was something like 103% of our revenue, so that £120m you've estimated couldn't all go back on fees without factoring in covering wages at all.

Drewery's calcs were encouraging regarding getting Championship season off of the aggregate which effectively frees up another £22m of allowable losses for this season compared to last, but sadly we cannot just lump that entire figure onto transfer fees alone given the upcoming rule changes as given the volume and profile of player you've listed, will almost certainly take us well over the 85% for next season and put us in a tougher spot to have to manage. Although more transparent, I really fear that the rules changes will affect clubs of our nature (proportionately one of th leagues smaller grounds/fan bases therefore lower revenue potential) actually make things worse for us.

Wouldn't be surprised if our actual transfer kitty is somewhere around £80/90m max unfortunately, which might be why we have had so many bids (reportedly) rejected as we are trying to spend our money as carefully as possible.

These are just guesstimates so I hope I'm wrong!

If you want something to send you to sleep at night I did a breakdown on the new rules as well.

I preface with the fact I'm not an expert but done a tonne of reading and my best understanding if it helps anyone:

If I am correct we are still in a very good position then because of the sales and if we keep making large profit sales it means we can spend quite a lot.  For me the new rules are a lot clearer than the old so easier to try and understand where we are.

James was excellent at Copa, but I agree he's fallen from his peak and unlikely to reverse that.  International games are very different from league, so I think it's a mistake to buy a player like him based on a few international matches.  But he was excellent - their team was fun to watch (unlike my team . . .)

So interesting see people write things like that when people were saying the exact same about Willian before he signed for us, and Willian hadn't played at Copa America and been one of the stand out players at the tournament. Weird world.

I personally don't see the scenarios and player profiles as remotely similar to be honest. Willian has a track record as a proper, hard working professional, having played at the top level and even came to us just to train before signing a contract. James on the other hand, has a history, at even a younger age or wanting high wages, downing tools, create issues in the dressing room and leaving clubs in the lurch at a wim.

I also don't like writing off players and as always, if Silva wants him and can work with him, great. But I feel that's a really flimsey comparison.

Yeh, I wouldn't write him off from being a useful squad player if very cheap. Willian was a great punt on a free and I wouldn't snub a useful attacking option having one last hurrah for peanuts - we have a history of that.

As for Oosterwolde above I would find it an odd link at such a steep price if it's seen only as a backup lB , but I gather he's played well at LCB too, 6 foot 2, strong, and played there the same amount of times as he played at LB last year. So perhaps he's a 2 birds one stone type signing. Could also mean we have the option to play 3 at the back (Diop/Tete -Bassey and Oosterwolde at the back with Castange and Robinson either side.)
His clips give off a similar profile/vibe to Bassey. Physical, pacey and aggressive as well as good don't he ball and capable of bringing it out of defence, could be a good pick up.

I agree. Not saying I'm in favor of signing James but it seems that whenever someone floats a player who is beyond their mid-20s people lack imagination as to what that player could be at Fulham. Imo there are many "over the hill" players who could absolutely thrive under Silva.
